1. Who will defend me from the glance of the languid-eyed gazelle?
I rode the sea of passion though fraught with peril.

2. A gazelle whose beauty is apportioned
Between the dune, the branch, and the moon.

3. Her glances have resolved that no heart should live for her,
Were it even as hard as stone.

4. In him all aspects of beauty are gathered
As are verses in an ode, however dispersed.

5. He bloodies his sword on a day of turmoil
As he casts a glance from a softly glancing eye.

6. In the fray, his dark eyes take the place of
White blades and brown lances against the foe.

7. His swords and spears in war are as deadly
As the batting of his lashes is to the heart.

8. None rival Abu Al-'Abbas in any age
Nor can his like be seen in time long passed.

9. Valor and munificence are joined in his hands
As flowers and snakes coiled in a garden.

10. He is the cloud, bringing mercy or lightning—
Seek his nearness, but beware his wrath.

11. Does not the sword know its scabbards
Were girded on him by the oft-mentioned hero?

12. You see him headed toward certain death
As the tail of doom and the dwindling of lifetimes.

13. Amid bloodshed and the Indian swords' clashing,
You would think him relaxing with wine and lute.

14. As if the brown lances in his grip were rods
Above which ripe fruits dangle.

15. His might frightened rebels, even as his manners
Were created from the freshest flowers.

16. By God, if the envious assailed him, they would find
No fault but that he shared mankind's nature.

17. O you whose lineage in glorious deeds has reached,
Above the station of the highest stars!

18. May the full moons of glory endure for you
And may you remain protected from all others!
