1. A veiled one passed by, inspiring awe and modesty
Alas! The full moon refuses to be veiled

١. طَرَقَت مُنَقَّبَةً تَروعُ تَحَجُّباً
هَيهاتَ يَأبى البَدرُ أَن يَتَنَقَّبا

2. And the dawn gleams through the darkness of night, unveiled
The jewels of maidens are about to be plundered

٢. وَالصُبحُ في حَلَكِ الدُجى مُتَنَقِّبٌ
وَحُلى الدَراري موشِكٌ أَن يُنهَبا

3. And the dawn writes in the page of its horizon
A thousand erased the light of the new crescent moon

٣. وَالفَجرُ يَكتُبُ في صَحيفَةِ أُفقِهِ
أَلِفاً مَحَت نورَ الهِلالِ المُذهَبا

4. A radiant white that outshines the moon with its brilliance
The lesser stars set as the forenoon approaches

٤. بَيضاءُ يَخفى البَدرُ مِن إِشراقِها
قُصرى النُجومِ مَعَ الضُحى أَن تَغرُبا

5. I bid her farewell and gathered from parting
The sweet, yet bitter agony of goodbye

٥. وَدَّعتُها فَجَنَيتُ مِن مُرِّ النَوى
حُلوَ الوَداعِ مُنَعَّماً وَمُعَذَّبا

6. A reunion when separation was imminent
And the lamp glows brighter as it goes out

٦. شَملٌ تَجَمَّعَ حينَ حانَ شَتاتُهُ
وَيَزيدُ إِشراقُ السَراجِ إِذا خَبا

7. A memory stirs me to despair as
The elderly are disturbed by reminders of their youth

٧. ذِكرى تُحَرِّكُني عَلى يَأسٍ كَما
طُرِبَ الكَبيرُ لِذِكرِ أَيّامِ الصِبا

8. Repetition of news is seen as tedious, yet I see
Repeated news of my beloved as delightful

٨. يُستَثقَلُ الخَبَرُ المُعادُ وَقَد أَرى
خَبَرَ الحَبيبِ عَلى الإِعادَةِ طَيِّبا

9. Sweet upon repetition, as though it were
The cooing of a dove, enchanting when reiterated

٩. يَحلو عَلى تَردادِهِ فَكَأَنَّهُ
سَجَعُ الحَمامِ إِذا تَرَدَّدَ أَطرَبا

10. Like the only son of Jadd, his name being repeated
Came to be cherished through its recurrence

١٠. كَالأَوحَدِ اِبنِ الجَدِّ كُرِّرَ ذِكرُهُ
فَأَتى عَلى تَكرارِهِ مُستَعذَبا

11. Shyakhān, revered from afar, always uncovered
Yet drawn near by intimacy, modestly veiled

١١. شَيحانُ تَحجُبُهُ المَهابَةُ سافِراً
أَبَداً وَيُدنيهِ السَنا مُتَحَجِّبا

12. In his essence, eloquence and wisdom
Lies what is in the stars, clouds and open terrain

١٢. في وَجهِهِ وَبَنانِهِ وَبَيانِهِ
ما في الكَواكِبِ وَالسَحائِبِ وَالرُبى

13. He gave, and gave no less; granted, and knew no bounds
He marched on, unmatched; shook, and knew no equal

١٣. أَعطى فَما أَكدى وَهَبَّ فَما وَنى
وَجَرى فَلَم يُلحَق وَهُزَّ فَما نَبا

14. The men bound their waist sashes at the mention of him
And walked freely, enamored by his love

١٤. عَقَدَت خَناصِرَها الرِجالُ لِذِكرِهِ
وَبَدا فَحَلّوا مِن مَهابَتِهِ الحُبا

15. They met him as a beloved, though his power was supreme
And though his eminence and good tidings were concealed

١٥. تَلقاهُ مَحبوباً عَلى سَطَواتِهِ
وَعَلى نَداهُ وَبِشرِهِ مُتَهَيَّبا

16. Like a spear with two blades, wherever you turned it
You found it protected by both its edges

١٦. كَالرُمحِ ذا نَصلَينِ أَينَ حَنَيتَهُ
أَلفَيتَهُ مِن حَومَتَيهِ مُذَرَّبا

17. Deft like a sword yet gentle like time
In ease and hardship it flows

١٧. كَالمَشرَفيِّ خَلابَةً وَذَلاقَةً
أَو كَالزَمانِ تَسَهُّلاً وَتَصَعُّبا

18. Wisdom told of satisfaction, yet beneath it
Lies a valor that calms and rages like seas

١٨. حِلمٌ حَكى رَضوى وَلَكِنَّ تَحتَهُ
بَأسٌ ذُرى رَضوى يَهِدُّ وَكَبكَبا

19. His might lies dormant under tranquility
Like embers, silently aflame

١٩. يَكتَنُّ مِنهُ البَطشُ تَحتَ سَكينَةٍ
كَالزَندِ يوجَدُ خامِداً مُتَلَهِّبا

20. Ordeals would come to consult his intelligence
No matter how much the wise were tested

٢٠. تَأتي التَجارِبُ تَستَشيرُ ذَكاءَهُ
مَهما اِستَشارَ الأَذكِياءُ مُجَرَّبا

21. His roots thrived and his branches bore fruit
And so he embodied glory, assigned or entitled

٢١. كَرُمَت أَرومَتُهُ وَأَينَعَ فَرعُهُ
فَحَوى الجَلالَةَ مَنسِباً أَو مَنصِبا

22. Like a garden, alluring to behold and a rain cloud
In character, gentle rains or torrential showers

٢٢. كَالرَوضِ راقَكَ مَنظَراً وَخَبَرتَهُ
فَوَجَدتَ عُنصُرَهُ الغَمامَ الصَيّبا

23. Delicate as dew, dignified as a mountain
A sea yet also a towering peak, in love or hatred

٢٣. هَشُّ النَدى جَزِلُ الوَقارِ كَأَنَّهُ
بَحرٌ وَطَودٌ إِن حَبا وَإِن اِحتَبى

24. The heights glimpsed him in wonder, then burst out
In smiles like flowers budding into bloom

٢٤. رَمَتِ المَعالي مِنهُ لَحظاً أَدعَجاً
وَاِفتَرَّ عَنهُ الزَهرُ ثَغراً أَشنَبا

25. Alas! Abu Amr, your attributes have become
Honors suffice even for the prestigious

٢٥. اِيهٍ أَبا عَمرٍو وَوَصفُكَ قَد غَدا
عِزّاً تَسَمّى كافِياً لَكَ مَحسَبا

26. You adorned Hims with eulogies in Al-Baqi‘
And protected it from harm in Aryn, fortified

٢٦. حَلَّيتَ حِمصاً بِالبَقيعِ مَدائِحاً
وَحَمَيتَ مِنها بِالعَرينِ مُؤَشَّبا

27. You perfected them until the night became a brilliant morn
And the frigid land became a verdant garden

٢٧. حَسُنَت فَعادَ اللَيلُ صُبحاً نَيِّراً
فيها وَصارَ الصَلدُ رَوضاً مُعشبِا

28. You inspired such excellence that the sea is now called a stream
And made the sun but a planet in comparison

٢٨. أَفهَقتَ حَتّى البَحرُ يُدعى جَدوَلاً
وَأَضَأتَ حَتّى الشَمسُ تُدعى كَوكَبا

29. And wretched the people who, contrary to their name
Strive against your ascendance but have yet to prevail

٢٩. وَشَقيُّ قَومٍ لا كَما زَعَمَ اِسمُهُ
بارى عُلاكَ فَما جَرى حَتّى كَبا

30. For he saw your sword a shining flash of light
And in you, its sheath a buried lightning bolt

٣٠. فَرَأى حُسامَكَ فيهِ بَرقاً ساطِعاً
وَرَأى مُناهُ فيكَ بَرقاً خُلَّبا

31. You clothed the tyrant in the red collar of death
And clothed us in the green security of prosperity

٣١. أَلبَستَهُ طَوقَ المَنِيَّةِ أَحمَراً
فَكَسَوتَنا التَأمينَ أَخضَرَ مُخصِبا

32. You made but his reprimand the speech
Of scabbarded swords, admonishing

٣٢. ما كانَ إِلّا أَن جَعَلتَ عِتابَهُ
بِكَلامِ أَلسِنَةِ الغُمُدِ مُعَتِّبا

33. If the hardened necks are harsh when they blame
None can deter them but the gentle gazelles

٣٣. إِنَّ الغَليظَ مِنَ الرِقابِ إِذا عَتا
لَم يَنهَهُ إِلّا الرِقاقُ مِنَ الظُبى

34. You subdued our tyrant, broke our resistance
And guided our ignorant to the best path

٣٤. دَمَّثتَ طاغينا جَبَرتَ مَهيضَنا
أَرشَدتَ جاهِلَنا الطَريقَ الأَصوَبا

35. Like a star that burned a demon and watered the land
With its falling rain and illuminated its darkness

٣٥. كَالنَجمِ أَحرَقَ مارِداً وَسَقى الثَرى
مِن نَوئِهِ رَيّاً وَنَوَّرَ غَيهَبا

36. As though your door is the Ka‘ba, erasing
The sins of those who approached it in penance

٣٦. وَكَأَنَّ بابَكَ كَعبَةٌ يَمحو بِها
زَلّاتِهِ مَن قَد أَتاها مُذنِبا

37. The masses flocked to him until they became
Like one man peering for the new crescent

٣٧. تَلقى الجَماهِرَ حَولَهُ فَكَأَنَّهُم
مِن كَثرَةٍ وَتَضاؤُلٍ رِجلُ الدَبا

38. If only my words could match my admiration
You would see my condition as most eloquent Arabic verse

٣٨. كَالصَائِمينَ عَشِيَّةَ الإِفطارَ قَد
مَدّوا العُيونَ إِلى الهِلالِ تَرَقُّبا

39. Your praise is enough to attain every request
For through you, I elevate poetry above lies

٣٩. أَوَلَيتَ ما لَو كانَ نُطقي مُعجَباً
عَن شُكرِهِ لَرَأَيتَ حالي مُعرِبا

40. So to you, from my eulogies, is the most splendid ornament
That with which I adorned you, most graceful jewelry

٤٠. وَكَفى بِمَدحِكَ نَيلَ سُؤلٍ إِنَّني
نَزَّهتُ فيكَ الشِعرَ عَن أَن يَكذِبا

41. Had it not been for marvelous deeds from you that set
My eulogizer would not have woven such finery

٤١. فَإِلَيكَ مِن مَدحي أَغَرَّ مُذَهَّباً
أَتحَفتُ مِنكَ بِهِ أَغَرَّ مُهَذَّبا

42. What excuse has a land fertilized with ambergris
To not be perfumed by the north wind or the zephyrs

٤٢. لَولا بَديعٌ مِن فَعالِكَ مُغرِبٌ
ما حاكَ مادِحُكَ البَديعَ المُغرِبا

43. Your being has transcended external honor just as
The Arabian horses transcended the horseshoes

٤٣. ما عُذرُ أَرضٍ تُربُها مِن عَنبَرٍ
أَن لا يَطيبَ بِها الشَمالُ وَلا الصَبا

44. So rise to the horizon of pride like the sun of leadership
While the East envies the magnificence of your West

٤٤. غَنِيَت عَنِ التَشريفِ ذاتُكَ مِثلَما
تَغنى عَنِ الأَسلاكِ أَجيادُ الظِبا

٤٥. فَاِطلَع بِأُفقِ الفَخرِ شَمسَ رِياسَةٍ
وَالشَرقُ يَحسِدُ في سَناكَ المَغرِبا
