أخذوا موثق العذار على الخد

1. They took the oath of innocence upon his cheek
Accusing him of breaking the covenant of beauty

١. أَخَذوا مَوثِقَ العِذارِ عَلى الخَدِّ
اِتِهَاما مِنهُم لِعَهدِ الجَمالِ

2. Yet it was the sword that marked his cheek unfairly
He bears it with pride in any case

٢. إِنَّما خَدُّهُ الحُسامُ فَظُلمٌ
حَملُهُ لِلنِجادِ في كُلِّ حالِ

3. For long the blossoms adorned the nights
With a splendor the nights adorned the blossoms

٣. طالَما زانَتِ اللَيالي بُدورٌ
مِنهُ ما زانَتِ البُدورُ اللَيالي

4. The rose once glowed on his sunlit cheek
But now it has retreated to the shade

٤. كانَ في شَمسِ خَدِّهِ الوَردُ ضاحٍ
فَهوَ الآنَ قَد أَوى لِظِلالِ

5. Poetry spoke when the new moon appeared - why shouldn't
The birds sing in the springtime of beauty?

٥. نَطَقَ الشِعرُ حينَ لاحَت وَلِم لا
تَسجَعُ الطَيرُ في رَبيعِ الجَمالِ

6. He excelled in nature and manners, so we said:
"Is he the brightest star or the star of virtues?"

٦. راقَ خَلقاً وَفاقَ خُلُقاً فَقُلنا
أَنجُمُ الأُفقِ أَم نُجومُ المَعالي
