طاول بجدك فالأقدار عنوان

1. With your resolve, destiny itself takes cue,
So govern, for the turns of fate cannot subdue,

١. طاوِل بِجَدِّكَ فَالأَقدارُ عُنوانُ
وَاِحكُم فَما لِصُروفِ الدَهرِ عِصيانُ

2. On you is prudence and command decisive, while
On the twists of fate acquiescence and consent due,

٢. عَلَيكَ حَزمٌ وَأَمرٌ نافِذٌ وَعَلى
ريبِ الحَوادِثِ تَسليمٌ وَإِذعانُ

3. For you is glory over enemies realized,
And by your sword the paths of fearutilized,

٣. لَكُم سُعودٌ عَلى الأَعداءِ نافِذَةٌ
وَفَت لَكُم حَيثُ حَدُّ السَيفِ خَوّانُ

4. You see the fighter ansars and oft one who
To death's command their hearing has sensitized,

٤. تَرى المَقاتِلَ أَنصاراً وَرُبَّتَما
أَصغَت لِأَمرِ المَنايا فَهيَ آذانُ

5. Kings - their might and numbers - if opposed you stand,
Then humbled and lowly by your rule they're manned,

٥. إِنَّ المُلوكَ وَإِن عَزّوا وَإِن كَثُروا
وَخالَفوكَ فَقَد ذَلّوا وَقَد هانوا

6. If they envy you - Abu'l 'Abbas - it for you
A joyous fame, while for enviers a vengeance fanned,

٦. إِن يَحسُدوكَ أَبا العَبّاسِ فَهوَ لَكُم
ذِكرٌ جَميلٌ ولِلحُسّادِ أَشجانُ

7. No shame the sun lacks luster for those whose sight
By blindness is marred, its radiance to slight,

٧. وَما عَلى الشَمسِ في أَن لاحَ رَونَقُها
فَأَنكَرَتهُ العُيونُ الرُمدُ نُقصانُ

8. Success your armada fitted out and sailed
On your command, though it embodied but one knight,

٨. أَعَدَّ تَوفيقُكَ الأُسطولَ يَقدُمُها
نَدبٌ أَتى المُلكَ عَيناً وَهوَ إِنسانُ

9. Muhammad we've enough of one whose nights
Old age approached, yet vigor still incites,

٩. مُحَمَّدٌ وَكَفانا مِن فَتىً هَرِمَت
بِهِ اللَيالي وَقاراً وَهيَ شُبّانُ

10. When a branch thrived in your lofty palm's shade
Lost were the lines of verse that called them lights,

١٠. لَمّا زَكا غُصُناً في دَوحِ سُؤدُدِكُم
تاهَت قَنا الخَطِّ لَمّا قيلَ أَغصانُ

11. The horse troops' leader curbs them in place,
As if still housed they are in the camp's space,

١١. القائِدُ الخَيلَ مَجدولاً أَياطِلُها
كَأَنَّما هِيَ في الأَرسانِ أَرسانُ

12. The hurler of white blades 'gainst heads, as if
Above each a royal crown they still embrace,

١٢. وَالتارِكُ البيضَ مِن ضَربِ الرُؤوسِ بِها
كَأَنَّما هِيَ فَوقَ إِلهامِ تيجانُ

13. Yearning for glory, wonder! - she pines,
That a love for home in her heart entwines,

١٣. رَقَّت حَنيناً إِلى الإِعجابِ لا عَجَباً
أَن رَقَّ حُبٌّ إِلى الأَوطانِ حَنّانُ

14. Protector of repute! - flames of war blaze,
Keen your sword, glowing your visage shines,

١٤. حامي الذِمارِ وَنارُ الحَربِ حامِيَةٌ
طَلقُ المُحَيّا وَحَدُّ السَيفِ غَضبانُ

15. The wounded he makes laugh, the thirsty makes drunk,
He sees blood as fragrance, tumult is joy; for him

١٥. يُبكي الصِفاحَ نَجيعاً وَهوَ مُبتَسِمٌ
وَيوسِعُ السُمرَ رِيّاً وَهوَ ظَمآنُ

16. So war is but leisure and comfort it plies,
The ocean hurls him to ships you launch, whose timber

١٦. يَرى الدِماءَ عُقاراً وَالظُبى زَهَراً
فَالحَربُ في زَعمِهِ راحٌ وَرَيحانُ

17. For them bodies integrated from planks comprise,
As if the ocean a riddle that by them is solved -

١٧. يَرمي بِهِ البَحرُ في فُلكٍ زَجَرتَ بِها
طَيراً لَهُنَّ مِنَ الأَلواحِ أَبدانُ

18. Your foes realizing that myriad deaths comprise,
Greens, reds and blacks appeared - by them were solved

١٨. كَأَنَّما البَحرُ مَعنىً مُشكِلٌ صَدَعَت
بِها أَعاديكَ أَنَّ المَوتَ أَلوانُ

19. Your foes realizing that myriad deaths comprise,
The greens are twigs whose flags are of leaves that

١٩. خُضرٌ وَدُهمٌ وَحُمرٌ ما بَدَت عَلِمَت
بِها أَعاديكَ أَنَّ المَوتَ أَلوانُ

20. If earlier fruiting, clusters of twigs comprise,
The reds are tossed by the rumbling wave as

٢٠. فَالخُضرُ قُضبٌ لَها الأَعلامُ عَن وَرَقٍ
لَو أَثمَرَت قَبلَها بِالحَتفِ قُضبانُ

21. Mounds of roseblossoms in dance supersize,
The blacks arrest gazes, their scheme appears

٢١. وَالحُمرُ يَرمي بِها المَوجُ الخِضَمُّ كَما
تَختالُ في زَهَراتِ الوَردِ كُثبانُ

22. As steeds on water, trooping and wise,
As if their foe by them like the hunted is traced

٢٢. وَالدُهمُ تَستَوقِفُ الأَبصارُ حِكمَتَها
كَأَنَّها فَوقَ خَدِّ الماءِ خيلانُ

23. A dance, when Indian anklets their music comprise,
With a band roused for death, entrusted they are,

٢٣. كَأَنَّما عَدوُها إِثرَ الطَريدِ بِها
رَقصٌ بِحَيثُ صَليلُ الهِندِ أَلحانُ

24. Never betraying or falling from the prize,
Their resolve like what they shook is inclined,

٢٤. بِعُصبَةٍ أُنهِضوا لِلمَوتِ وَاِئتُمِنوا
عَلى الحِفاظِ فَما خانوا وَلا حانوا

25. Their faces like what they drew are stained red dyes,
Prudence has given them oaths inviolate,

٢٥. أَعطافُهُم مِثلُ ما هَزّوهُ مائِلَةٌ
وُجوهُهُم مِثلُ ما سَلّوهُ غُرّانُ

26. That misguidance, wherever, is abject in guise,
If you wished, with them you'd course misery's land,

٢٦. أَعطاهُمُ الحَزمُ أَيماناً مُؤَيَّدَةً
أَنَّ الضَلالَ ذَليلٌ حَيثُما كانوا

27. Yet no pillars of the feeble would you comprise,
Before you lies what to Moses his signs revealed

٢٧. إِن شِئتَ رُعتَ بِهِم أَرضَ الشَقاءِ فَلَم
يَعضُدهُ مِن دَولَةِ المَخذولِ صُلبانُ

28. In Egypt, yet from Pharaoh didn't comprise,
Can one whose will is vain ever rival your might?

٢٨. فَقَبلَكُم ما أَتى موسى بِآيَتِهِ
مِصراً فَلَم يُغنِ عَن فِرعَونَ هامانُ

29. Like the wind unrestrained by Solomon-wise,
But for you, not the Euphrates would envy the salt,

٢٩. وَهَل يُنازِعُكُم مَن عَزمُهُ عَبَثٌ
كَالريحِ لَم يُجرِها مِنهُ سُلَيمانُ

30. Nor would Baghdad on the day of pride comprise,
Fragrant is your repute, even discarded honey,

٣٠. لَولاكَ لَم يَحسُدِ المِلحَ الفُراتُ وَلا
جُنَّت بِسَبتَةَ يَومَ الفَخرِ بَغدانُ

31. Musk and ambergris aroma comprise,
Though varied the people in creeds they profess,

٣١. قَد طابَ ذِكرُكَ حَتّى الشَهدُ مُطَّرَحٌ
وَفاحَ حَتّى اِستُبينَ المِسكُ وَالبانُ

32. Today for your love they are one and comprise,
Seeking your shade, protected and outcast both come

٣٢. وَالناسُ شَتّى أَعادٍ في مَذاهِبِهِم
لَكِنَّهُم في هَواكَ اليَومَ إِخوانُ

33. As do roebuck and deer the same grove comprise,
The wealthy and destitute equally yearn for your grace

٣٣. يَأوي لِظِلِّكَ مَحمِيٌّ وَمُطَّرَدٌ
كَالرَوضِ يَرتادُهُ ظَبيٌ وَسِرحانُ

34. As do sober and drunk for wine comprise,
A firm hero, mature in wisdom, refined,

٣٤. وَيَشتَهي جودَكُم مُثرٍ وَذو عَدَمٍ
كَالخَمرِ يَعشَقُها صاحٍ وَنَشوانُ

35. Lofty in ambition, generous is your guise,
None more foolishly craves glory than he;

٣٥. مَلِكٌ فَتى البَأسِ كَهلُ الرَأيِ مُتَّضِحٌ
عالي الذُؤابَةِ رَحبُ الباعِ يَقظانُ

36. His speech plumbs the truth - some glory implies -
As if people are but phrases, which by him

٣٦. أَغَرُّ لِلجاهِ مِنهُ مَنطِقٌ سَدَدٌ
إِلى الصَوابِ وَبَعضُ الجاهِ إِلحانُ

37. Are declined and inflected, stopped and comprise,
From every word an apposite meaning he draws,

٣٧. كَأَنَّما الناسُ أَلفاظٌ لَهُنَّ بِهِ
رَفعٌ وَخَفضٌ وَتَحريكٌ وَإِسكانُ

38. And for every deed, with justice, its balance implies,
Every time a spring for him from your creatures,

٣٨. مِن كُلِّ قَولٍ لَهُ فَصلٍ يُصيبُ بِهِ
وَكُلِّ فِعلٍ لَهُ بِالعَدلِ ميزانُ

39. And every garden through you a fresh paradise,
Trustworthiness comes easily to his nature,

٣٩. وَكُلُّ وَقتٍ رَبيعٌ مِن خَلائِقِهِ
وَكُلُّ رَوضٍ بِهِ في الطيبِ بُستانُ

40. Can coarseness in it find any comprise?
When he speaks, time listens rapt,

٤٠. حَملُ الأَمانَةِ هَيِنٌ في سَجِيَّتِهِ
وَهَل يحُسُّ حَصاةً فيهِ ثَهلانُ

41. As the thirsty hearken water's wellspring-cries,
The mantles of his dignity, like those of

٤١. إِذا تَكَلَّمَ أَصغى الدَهرُ مُستَمِعاً
كَما يُصيخُ لِداعي الماءِ ظَمآنُ

42. Khosrow's, wisdom from Luqman implies,
Returned evil with good, forgiveness on call,

٤٢. كَأَنَّما بُردَتا أَثوابِ هَيبَتِهِ
كِسرى وَيَأخُذُ عَنهُ الرَأيَ لُقمانُ

43. So that sin appeared to him an offering-prize,
O Time! Grasp him with miserly palm, for of blessings

٤٣. جَزى الإِساءَةَ بِالحُسنى مُسامَحَةً
حَتّى تَخَيَّلَ أَنَّ الذَنبَ قُربانُ

44. Rare bestowal itself is a fair compromise,
While you are accused, except of him - behold! -

٤٤. يا دَهرُ شُدَّ عَلَيهِ كَفَّ ذي مِقَةٍ
وَاِبخَل بِهِ إِنَّ بَعضَ البُخلِ إِحسانُ

45. Through him may you joy gain and find paradise,
Attach yourself to him and prosper for ages,

٤٥. وَأَنتَ مُتَّهَمٌ إِلّا عَلَيهِ فَها
عَلِقَ بِهِ سَبتَةَ تَحظى وَتَزدانُ
