إن الغني مع الغنى يوم المنا
The wealthy and their wealth on Judgment Day
قيل الأبالس قد يعاند بعضهم
The foes may quarrel among themselves
ولما أتتني منك يا غاية المنى
When you sent me messages, O ultimate wish
يا فتى شبه النعم
O youth who forgets the blessings
كوني استحال إلى بلى وفساد
My body turned to decay and ruin,
سئمت من الدنيا لأني سبرت ما
I have grown weary of this world, for I have plumbed its every depth
اخجلت دهرا قد كشفت خداعه
You have shamed an era that unveiled its deception
يا من له في التحاجي
O you who in altercation
يا رقيا بالحجى
O tender because of sorrow,
يا من له لذكاه في
O you whose wit
يا من له عوارف
O you who has continuous mystical knowledge
أيا من قد ذكا فهما
Home is the sailor, home from sea
يا ثائرا يبغي له
O you who seek five hundred dirhams
أيا من قد سما علما
O you who has ascended in knowledge
يا خائضا بحر علم
A voyager on the sea of knowledge
من أي شيء يا فتى
Of what substance, O youth
يا ذكيا فاق كلا بالحجى
O wise one who excels all in reason
أيا قد سما فهما
O you whose understanding ascended loftily,
أليوم ضاءت لمحة السر الخفي
Today the glimpse of the hidden secret shone openly
إن اجتماع الدين والدنيا معا
The joining of religion and world together
يا عياذي من داهمات البلايا
O my Protector from afflictions that strike suddenly
إذا عد اهل الفضل زهرا منيرة
If the people of merit are counted as radiant flowers
يا من حجاه لم يزل للفخر يجلب
O you whose pilgrimage continues to bring pride
يا أيها القرم الذي
O you whose knowledge
يا ذا الذي بذكائه
O you, whose intelligence
تدثر بالصواب تنل ثوابا
Wrapped in righteousness you will gain reward
الطفل الأقدس بهجتي وبهائي
The holiest child, my joy and my glory
عشاء أطفلت فيه ذكاء
A night whose brilliance sparkled
قد زارنا الرحمن واتضح الهدى
The Merciful visited us and guidance became clear
إن شئت قتل الحاسدين تعمدا
If you wish to kill the envious deliberately
ليس لي راحة بها أستريح
I have no rest in which I can relax
خطوب لقد أربت فليس لها حد
Sorrows have multiplied, they have no end
نلوم ذي الدنيا على أنها
We blame the world though she betrays
لا تغبطن أمرا يزهو بثروته
Do not envy one who boasts of wealth,
سبلت على شمس الهدى الأستار
The veils were lowered over the sun of guidance,
لا تبدلن غالي الزمان ببخسه
Do not exchange the preciousness of time for its cheapness
يا راهبا لا ترهبن
O monk, do not ever despair
وأعمدة لبيت الله سبع
And pillars seven for God's house
خبرونا معاشر الفساق
Tell us, you band of sinners
محتد المجد والعلاء المنيف
The glorious refuge, the honored place
خطب مريع ثابت لا يصرف
A fixed, resolute proposal that cannot be deflected
إن كنت ذا شوق فإني أشوق
If you yearn, then I yearn even more
لا تحقرن وضيع الشأن ممتهنا
Do not despise the lowly man of humble station,
أتلفت فهمك في ضيائك
You ruined your understanding through your splendor,
يا طالبا نسكا تهذب
O you who seek to be devout
غادرن أمرأة فاجرة
A wanton woman has left
بديع حسن امتداحي رسل ربهم
The excellence of praising the Messengers of their Lord
أشمس الضحى لاحت ام الكون باسم
The sun of morning shone, the mother of the universe smiled
رأيت في الناس ظلاما بلا عدد
I saw in people endless darkness
إذا ما أدبرت دنياي عني
If my life turns away from me
تنبه الدهر بعد ما هجعا
The age awoke after it had slept
يا من يضايقني ويؤثر شدتي
O You who troubles me and likes my distress
الغم والهم هما آفة للقلب
Worry and grief are afflictions of the heart
من يخدم الدنيا الدنية طائعا
Who serves the lowly world willingly
إن الجمال مع الصيانة
Beauty with discretion, affection with loyalty,
للإنشقاق الرذل شر معان
The ignoble schism is pure evil,
إن الفروع تجيء مثل أصولها
Branches come just as their roots did,
ولرب غرقى أشغلوا بنفوسهم
Many a drowned man was preoccupied with his soul
ليس الصعوبة في الأوامر انما
The difficulty lies not in orders
فاستدرك المدح وقل إنه
The absent have no shore
لا تنقسم رأيا بعقلك كالذي
Do not divide your mind in two as one
ولم تحصر الافضال منه كانه
His favors are endless as though
ظلم البصيرة في النفوس مسبب
The darkness of insight in souls causes
باسم النبي الياس من كيرلس
In the name of the prophet Elias from Cyril
صدع المنى صدر المآثر في الورى
The abode of desires has split open the chest of glories in the land
أحسن بدار قد زها حسنها
A goodly home its beauty graced
لا تعجبن بمن راضوا الجسوم فقد
Do not be amazed by those who gratify the bodies, for beasts
يا فقيها حاذقا
O wise scholar
وما رأسه مثنى وتأخير جوفيه
Neither is his head bent nor his insides delayed
تعاظمت الذنوب فاكتسبتني
Sins have grown and earned me
يا أيها النحرير من
O you who are free, all are in need of you
إذا رمت الصعود إلى علاء
If you seek to ascend to lofty heights
إن حادث يختص أو يشمل
Whether an event concerns or affects us,
أحتام تصبو للتصابي وتهزل
You yearn for the gazelles and jest with them,
هو العمر أهناه اصطناع المكارم
Youth is spent perfecting virtues
يا من له بين البرية ساعد
O you whose arm extends through the wilderness
يا ظالما مع ظلمه بتظلم
O oppressor, along with your oppression you wrong me
قل منبع الأراتقه
Say, what is the source of heresies
يا من بأحكام الأحاجي لم يجر
O you whose riddles baffle all at every turn
يا مفرطا بعطاء
O you who squanders gifts,
ذر عنك سلعا وسل عن حلة القدس
Leave aside goods, inquire about the garment of Jerusalem
يا من غدا من فضله
O He whose grace
خطاؤك وافر بالوزر طام
Your mistakes are abundant with blame
يا من سما بذكاء فطنته
O you whose intelligence ascended with wisdom
إذا نهل الهندي ظلما دم الورى
If the Indian sheds the blood of people unjustly
سور منيع عاصم عكا فما
Impregnable walls protect Acre, so it will not
يا هدهد العلم الذي
O hoopoe of knowledge, you who
إن الشجاعة في التحمل للأذى
Patience in adversity is courage true,
يا منزلا باهى بتفويقه
O excellent abode with its refinement
إذا أخطى أمرؤ بالكبر يخطي
If a person errs through pride, he errs
ما أنا في هواك بالمرتاب
I have no doubt in my love for you
يا بالغا حلم المشيب إلى متى
O you who have attained the wisdom of old age, for how long
عجبت من الأنثى ففي حين طلقها
I'm amazed by women - when divorced
ما حيلتي ان العداة كثيرة
My strength is not enough, for enemies abound
يشير العقل بالموجب
The mind implies with determination
أيها الخل المحاجي
O you who debates so eloquently
وما اسم يعم الحزن والسهل طرده
And no name can dispel grief and banish it from the plains
ومن يذق الأشيا كهيئة كونها
Whoever experiences things as they truly are,
أي مار نيقولاوس المولى الذي
O Nicolas the saint who attained
كم أنزل الموت المريع مملكا
How many a fearful death has dethroned a king
يا ذا الذي من جوده
O you whose promise of generosity
إلام أداري الجسم حرصا وأتعب
Why do I weary my body with greed
يا من لأشتات الفضائل جامع
O you who brings together all virtues
لا بشر في العالم الفاني يحق له
No mortal in this fleeting world deserves
هذا سبيل الله هم به الهمام
This is the path of God, so be resolute in purpose
لا بدع ان نحن اتحدنا عنوة
We must unite, even by force
وسائل ما تقول الآن في زمني
What will you say now in my time
يا ذا الحزوم الأروع الندب
O you of the most splendid grief
أيا من أحاجيه
O you whose riddles
يا أيها البطل الذي
O you, the hero who
فتى قد رقي أوج المفاخر والعلى
A youth who has reached the summit of glory and sublime eminence
جمع الغنى حاز تقسيما وجامعه
The gatherer of wealth finds a division, and he who gathered
يا من له بالفضل ورد ما تغيض
O you who have a stream of merit never clouded,
كلامك من كمالك مستفاد
Your words derive from your perfection
ولقد مزجت زعاق طبعك بالإخاء
I have mixed the clamor of your nature with kindness,
وللعباد مزايا جمة جملت
The faithful have abundant merits in full
ضعف الطبيعة مقرون بفطرتها
The weakness of nature comes with how it's made
يا مزدهين بحسنهم وجسومهم
O you who boast of beauty and bodies
رأى الله كليا بمرآة ذاته
God saw Himself fully in the mirror of His essence
أيا راهبا إن شئت تحظى بنعمة
O monk, if you wish to enjoy blessings
ما اختيال الجهول الا ظلال
What are the illusions of the ignorant but shadows?
إلى ما لا تكف عن المعيب
To the one who does not stop blaming,
تحفظ بإيصاء الاله وثق به
Take heed of God's command and put your trust in Him
الحب يبتلع الأتعاب قاطبة
Love swallows all hardships
وما اسم سما في دوره حينما أتى
No name ever rose to fame in its time
إن شئت أن تبني بناء شامخا
If you wish to build a lofty structure
أخلاي أين المعولات النوائح
My brethren! Where are the mourning women, the weeping,
أحكم علي بما تختاره أبدا
Judge me as you wish forever
شيآن تقذى منهما
Two things that the wise should flee,
ومن نكد الدنيا على الحر أن يرى
The agony of this life for the noble one is to see
العدل يبني والأمان يشيد
Justice builds and security fortifies
أينعى قتيل قد قضى مستشهدا
Shall one slain as a martyr be mourned?
لقد أفصح الشيب المقول ولخصا
Indeed, gray hair has made speech eloquent, summarized it
كلامه الباهر اللفظ المفيد لنا
His striking words of useful diction to us
أنظر إلى حسن النفوس ولا تكن
Look to the beauty of souls, do not be
إن قيل ما أردى الوحوش كواسرا
If it is said what the beasts desire as prey
ما ليس يسبق في الحواس
What the mind cannot foresee
توق شراهة عاثت بحسم
Curb your greed which wreaked havoc ruthlessly
ولن تبقى بلا هم إذا لم
You will not remain without worries if you
ومن يطمع بعفو الله حتى
Whoever hopes for God's pardon, though
لا يستحق المدح الا الذي
He alone deserves praise, who
يا خاضعا للهوى هلا ارعويت بمن
O you who submits to desire, why don't you graze with one
يا ويل من أغفل ذكر المنون
Oh woe to those who neglect death's memory
من المحال اجتماع القبح والحسن
It is impossible for ugliness and beauty to coexist
فرط التداوي بالتوالي آفة
Excessive treatment in succession is harmful
لم ينهض الثاوون من أجداثهم
The dead did not rise from their graves
نشكر الله لم يصر غير هذا
We thank Allah, no other tribulation has come
حاز الرئاسة جاهل ظلماولم
An ignorant man unjustly seized power
أكرم بمولود اتى
He was blessed with a newborn baby
بشراك موسى بالغلام فقد
Moses received the good news of a boy
لا تسلني يا عائدي عن فؤادي
Do not ask me, O returning one, about my heart,
يا فتى نور الحجى
O youth, radiance of intellect
يا من غدا في الناس منهاج التقى
O you who became among the people the path of piety
يا ذا الذي بسمو سو
O you whose lofty ambition
يا من يشوق إلى التحاجي ان من
O you who yearn for debate, I am not one
أكرم بشأن كنيسة قد شيدت
Praise the church that was built
إن السياسة لم تصلح لذي جسد
Politics is not suited for the frail of body
ألا رعاك الاله من وطن
May God protect your homeland
ألا يا ذا الهمام الألمعي
O you whose ambition is sublime
يا ألمعيا قد سما
O brilliant one who rose high
ما للهدى كالأربع الأدراس
The guidance is not like the four blind ones
ترجو اليهود أن يأتي المسيح وقد
The Jews long for the Messiah to come and he
إذا شمت الحسود به اكتئاب
If the envious gloat over your depression,
قيان الهوى صدعن نفسا لأن غدت
The sorrows of passion have broken a soul that became
رب سرب لو جاء في عهد موسى
Many a flock, had it lived in Moses’ days
الموت معلوم واما نوعه
Death is certain, but its type unknown
زمن تنكر فعله إذ إنه
An era whose deeds are disguised, for indeed
سكن قراعا انت شوط مجاله
Settle the contention, you are a tract whose length
كأن هبات الله حين تقسمت
As though God's gifts when they were apportioned
يا من حوى فضل الحجى
O you who encompass the excellence of pilgrimage
أنظر لما في الفتى من حسن منقبة
Look at the virtue and grace in this young man,
يا من مضوا ونجوا من لج عالمهم
O you who have passed on and escaped from the depths of their world
وما بيضا منعمة
A white, smooth cheek
لم تكف غاية بالحلي إذ أثرت
Adornment could not restrain her once she chose
فيك للشهوة غيم
In you desire clouds
أرسلت منظومي اليك مؤرخا
I sent you my poem dated
شرة الأسباب في كل امرئ
The causes of evil in every man
ما ليس تقبله العقول بلذة
What minds don't readily accept
لا يعجز الله كون دون علته
No power can make God helpless
يا لقوم قد تناهى وانتشر
O people who have gone astray and spread
أضحي وأبصاري تغض وتبصر
I sacrifice myself, while my sights are dimming and seeing,
سرت نسمات القدس من أطيب الإض
The breezes of holiness blew from the sweetest fragrance,
لو يشعر الصخر في ما نالنا ووعى
If only the rock could feel our affliction and comprehend
ثغر الزمان لقد غدا متبسما
The face of time has now become smiling,
يا نسيم الصبا تحمل سلامي
O gentle breeze carrying my greetings
يا من غدا لحجاه في
O you whose face unveils
سلام يفوق المسك والند نفحة
A greeting that surpasses musk and ambergris in fragrance
إن تكن راهبا فكن نواحا
If you are a monk, then be a wailer
رأيت بلاد الشرق في كل حالة
I have seen the lands of the East in every state
يا من يفوق بعلمه
O you whose knowledge excels
مصاحب الرجل السوء المخادع لا
He who accompanies the evil deceitful man
لا تبغ ما لا ينبغي لك فعله
Do not seek what is not proper for you to do
لا لا تعيرن أمرأ فيما أتى
Do not reproach a man for what he did
يا سيدا حاز الذكاء فلم يزل
O master of intelligence unceasing
ومتى ما خلت أني في أمان
Whenever I thought I was safe,
لعمرك إن الصبر غايته القدر
By your life, patience leads to destiny
صاح ليس النسك في لبس العبا
O wise one, asceticism is not in wearing wool
أشر رئيس من أضل بحزبه
The worst of leaders is he who leads his party astray
سقاك الحيا قبرا لقد صرت خازنا
The grave has made you drink death, you became a treasurer
مولى عطاياه سمت فوق العلا
My Master, his gifts ascend beyond the heights,
مهما نمت منا الجسوم وأخصبت
No matter how our bodies flourish and thrive
لعل صروف النفس صح عليلها
Perhaps the turning of the soul has cured its sickness,
يا من له حكم لقد عزت وجلت
O you whose wisdom is profound, exalted is your glory,
أعيى على كل نطس طب اربعة
Blind to every fault my heart finds good in four:
أخفيت عني ما طويت فما اختفى
You hid from me what you concealed, yet nothing remains hidden
أترى نظام الكون أوشك يهدم
Does the cosmos' order seem about to crumble,
يا من أضل السعي خذ لك مرشدا
O you who lost the way in your endeavor, take a guide for yourself
من كان ليس بخاضع لرئيسه
Who is not completely obedient to his leader
قسا دهري علي فعيل صبري
My fate was cruel to me, so my endurance weakened,
إحفظ وصايا الله يا ذا المتقي
Keep God's commandments, O you who are devout
يا ذكي العقل بان لنا
O wise one, it has become clear to us
يقول القضاة الجائرون بأننا
The unjust judges say that we were just
لسانك عن جنانك ترجمان
Your tongue translates your soul
يا فتى فاق بالحجى
O youth who excels in reasoning
لا تأمنن دموع العين قبل سنى
Do not trust the tears of the eyes before old age
هنئت يا دار السعادة واعتلن
Congratulations, oh home of happiness, be high
إن الونية موت العزم كم دفنت
Procrastination is the death of resolve, it has buried
قد جاءكم مني الجواب قصيدة
The answer has come to you from me in a poem
ذر فساد الجهل واحكم
Abandon the corruption of ignorance and rule
أبكي وعبراتي دم فانا الذي
I weep and my tears are blood, for I am he
أكرم بمولود لاكرم والد
He was born noble, though no noble father begot him,
كنيسة رفعت فيها منابرها
A church whose pulpits were raised
أرى في يد التسماح عظما مجردا
I see in the hand of time a bare bone
لرحمة الله حد ما له درك
The mercy of God has a limit, unattainable
أيا رقيا في الورى
Oh, gentle spring in flowered land
كن ببلواك شاكرا غير شاك
Be thankful in your affliction without complaining
أي بطرس القس تم الحكم فيك كما
O Peter the priest, the judgment against you is complete
ألا قاطعوا الدنيا فقد واصلت أذى
Alas! The world's harm has connected,
المرء موضوع التغاير إذ بدا
A man is subject to change when he begins
ربع لقد أربى سنى وسناء
A quarter has grown old, yet still shines bright,
يا سدرة المنتهى الله رقاك
O Sidrat al-Muntaha, may Allah exalt you,
وما اسم على حرفين جاء ثلثة
No name of two letters came as three
لا تكثرن من الكلام فإنما
Do not speak much, for most of the talking
جعلتني بين أعدائي الثلثة
You made me amidst three and five foes -
قد يرهب الصمصام بعض في الوغى
Some may fear the wasp in strife
حادي المنية لا يألو المسير رجا
The guide of death tirelessly journeys on
إن الملامة للصنيع ولائما
Blame for what you've done, not who reproaches,
مازال هذا الدهر فينا لاعبا
This life still toys with us,
سئمت حياتي من كرور المصائب
يا ذا الذي قد سار في إغوائه
إن الحواس مصارع الظلمات
إنما المرء من المرأة
نح واجر بالسفح الذي دنسته
يا أيها القرم الذي تعنو
يا من اضاع نهاه في
يا من يصيد جوارحا وكواسرا
يا ذا الذي بين الورى
يا عالما قد غدا في فضله علما
يا فتى الفاظه
أيا من بالحجى اضحى
إلى كم تعتني في رحض جسم
وليس يد تقبلها لخوف
وردية العذراء ام الله قد
يا فتى إحصاء فضل
أيا من قد غوى بهوى غوان
يا من يحاول مرشدا
يا ذا الذي ألفاظه
يا مصقعا فاق بالتحاجي
يا فقيها فاق كل نهى
يا إمام الفضل من أضحى
يا راقدا في علمه
هاك يا رب الفتا
من لي بذنب ساق لي من منيتي
لكم التهاني فالزواج جميل
كثر العثار بعثرة الرؤساء
لذبيحة الغفران ينبوع الفدى
شرع الذي شرع النفاق بشرعه
أمانا لبنيان غدا أسه الصفا
ما مرأة السوء إلا وهدة العطب
ممنع عهد لم يضع عنده عهد
أيها الواعظ المحاول مدحا
لو قيل ما ريح السموم ونفث ربات
إن شئت أن تحظى بما
غاب الشقيق لذا شقت مرائره
يا ظريفا أهديت خلك ظرفا
ليس الفضيلة في الذين طباعهم
يا أيها الغمر الذي
ألا إن مغنى المجد ثلت دعائمه
بادر إلى استئصال كل جريرة
ولرب أربع في الورى لم يكفها
علل فؤادا عند وقع الأسى
كن مستعدا للمحاربة التي
خازن الفضل عبد مالكه
أخفاك رمس أم ظاهر عن
هذا الكتاب الذي قد جاء مشتملا
مولى قضى بالله ممتلئا به
منصورة تزهو محاسنها
لسمي ايليا النبي نقلة
يا من ذكاه في الحجى أربى وأنمى
تفكر بالمآل ودع طماعا
يا فتى بالعلم أضحى
إذا ما شئت ان تحيى سعيدا
قل للجواد الذي قد خب منفردا
ومن لم يهو من دنياه شيئا
العمر فان والتنعم زائل
إن شمت ذا سدر فكن متمايلا
يا حبذا حلب المنيفة أنها
تبغي لغيرك أن يكون مهذبا
ألا فالكرى خل ردي مضيع
إن الخطية خطة ما اسطاعها
قد ضل رأيا زاهد يبغي الريا
عجبا لطاغ في البرية مفسد
متى ما اسطعت جودا فابذلنه
إنني أشكو فواجي الألم
إنما الصحة خير وافر
وما ظاهر يوما بأمن وراحة
أي محتد الخطر المؤيد
وإذا شعرنا بالخطية باطنا
أوار البلايا يوضح العزم في الفتى
دليل جنان المرء لفظ لسانه
بعدا لدهر ان ترى طول المدى
نظرت كل البرايا جل موجدها
خفض تكبر ما يأتيك من ولد
تدبر بالأمور على قياس
إذا كان فعل المرء في الناس سالما
يا فاترا فقدت منه حرارته
يا صاح ان شئت تسلم هاك اربعة
أبتغي الموت ليس أن صنيعي
يا لنفس تحارب الله عمدا
لله يا من سار عنا وارتحل
ماذا أقول وذنبي لا قرار له
لولا امتداح الأناسي الأرذلين لما
إن خط أقلام النفوس مظالما
خلاي يا من قد سموا
يا أولي الفضل والندى
وما اسم اصله نبت
لكبر السن لم نضبط عفافا
أمر من اللألاء بالمن منة
يا أيهذا الناهب اسمع مصغيا
إذا فقدت منا حرارة روحنا
وما مال مني القلب يوما إلى السوى
لو أن تليق بكم هدية جامد
خان لابناء السبيل عني به
يا بيعة وردية ورد الهدى
أحسن الله في البرية صنعا
يا حي اسمعيل حياك الحيا
الشيخ صقر الخازني قد مضى
