1. Two things that the wise should flee,
The insight of the seer and the seeing eye;

2. I have tested them both
With keen senses and discerning mind.

3. If told: O you, what are they?
I'd cry out in loudest voice:

4. The pride of the aged in his staff
Is folly, as is the youth's arrogance.

5. The first forsakes
His duty in worldly affairs,

6. The other is mad—though warned against it,
And both are fruits of delusion.
