1. A night whose brilliance sparkled,
A night whose brilliance sparkled,

2. Whose guest fires kindled a heart,
Its brilliance sparked souls for it is brilliance,

3. And drew near so the heart hosted it but
Its persistence on sorrows was more intense,

4. An age of misery made us brilliant,
So wondrously brilliance has failed.

5. Eloquence is too short, no more clarity,
Eloquence has ended, no more brilliance.

6. Bliss has left us and sorrow appears,
Grief stays in us and so does lament.

7. The suns of day and season set together,
Affliction assassinated their light.

8. The full moon was veiled in concealment at night,
Light is gone and radiance is hidden.

9. O two moons, we know nothing is hidden from you,
Splendour sets from our east forever.

10. We roamed in the shadows of a dark night,
Wandering with no guidance to lead us.

11. When the loss moved away from us,
Lament appeared and elegy was unleashed.

12. Eyelids were shut to their soreness,
Tears mixed with blood streamed forth.

13. With every tear that fell down a cheek,
Was the blood of two brothers and then brotherhood.

14. The eyelids have wounds and traces,
As if in them laid sheathed swords.

15. In the entrails, there is inflammation and kindling,
Like a furnace set ablaze by agony.

16. The misfortunes of calamities came treacherously,
They betrayed us so solace abandoned us.

17. It deprived us of a sweet, pleasant oasis,
Therefore, thirst did not part from us.

18. A living gentleman modesty gave life,
And revived one who asked him for life.

19. A youth who attained glory from his glories
Attained for us the most glorious glories.

20. If one as brilliant as him was hit with misfortune
Like this, he would revolt and through it kneel down.

21. Consoling the brilliant became difficult,
And patience was difficult when consoling was hard.

22. No condolences for the virtuous but rather he deserves
To him belongs extolling of virtue.

23. A peerless model from past and future,
None gave birth or will give birth to the like of him.

24. I worship God an abundant sea of righteousness,
The righteous will prove him right for he is the Utterly Righteous.

25. I worship God, his victories flourish,
While the prides of his enemies tumble down.

26. I worship God, death targets him,
With an arrow that had no deviation.

27. I worship God, about whom it will be said one day:
“For a peer that fulfilled and yours is the remaining.”

28. I worship God whose effort expires,
Or effort that affliction will make expire.

29. I worship God who sleeps under earth
A corpse therein while visitations are impossible.

30. The highest flag will be wrapped around him.
Without any crookedness will he be wrapped.

31. And reside in the burial ground the star Canopus,
To richness through him will be residence.

32. Fate judged him and judged with a decree
Divine, to it he was entitled.

33. Death seized what it coveted
And the inevitable was attained through it.

34. Can death spare any living?
Is there for it any deferment?

35. Will the son of a female be spared from death
While his beginning and end is death?

36. So where are the resting places of great men who perished
With their honour and where are the strongest?

37. And where are those who raise victory banners triumphantly
And where are the knowledgeable and the most devout?

38. And where are the sword and high ground owners?
And where the prosperous children of prosperity?

39. They were brought up indulging in the prime of life.
That was their pasture - such prosperity!

40. Leave this and say: where are
The friends of worldliness and allies?

41. They left a stumbler in the track of one who perished
Without gaining and without loyalty to the living.

42. It is the religion whose followers will fulfil it
Without fail when repayment comes.

43. Destruction will befall what he builds one day,
Its courtyard’s demise will be its perishing.

44. No remedy forever for loving souls.
Death’s redemption has no remedy.

45. If the sanctuary became prohibited, no intimacy,
No consolation for the consolers and they caused no harm.

46. The shadow of a glorious glory shrunk,
Glory and honours became the hopes of beggars.

47. The tightness of real estates spread in the wake of a man
After whom the chivalry of youths shrunk.

48. His life ended so he ended upon us,
Sins that have upon us no expiry.

49. A day when Wednesday died in it,
Its calamity is the sitting of Wednesday.

50. He disappeared from us at sunset
Evilly was that evening!

51. He cured endless absence and cured us -
What use is healing if healing is impossible?

52. If the earth grieved his loss desolately
The sky certainly rejoiced at his ascension.

53. Our souls with sorrow flew up high,
Rays when the Brilliance shone.

54. Yes, sorrow reached both far and near
But was confined amongst the nearest.

55. So his closest kin are most aggrieved
But not equal are the nearest of kin!

56. If he could be ransomed I would ransom him
But no equal for him exists to ransom!

57. He perished with his glory never perishing,
He inherited but has no elegy that inherits him.

58. Longing assailed me so feelings of longing possessed me,
Feelings that have upon me no remission.

59. When the heart turned away in sadness,
And much preferable to it is this devotion.

60. I experienced both abodes with their circles
Circles with which ordeal turns.

61. The stomping ground of sorrow is cinders and its
Repast is vexation and its path misery.

62. Those who lost it have no salvation,
Those bereaved of it have no rescue.

63. By your life, the crevice of grief is deep grief
Descent makes the respectable descend.

64. It connected in souls without disconnection
Like a circle whose end is its beginning.
