أوصيكمو يا أيها العقلاء
I advise you, O wise men
إني لأعلم لا أزال معلما
I know I'll always be an advisor
من لصب تصاعدت حسراته
For one whose sorrows have intensified,
سمعاوطوعا للإمام
In compliance and obedience to the imam
من لصب دموعه ليس ترفا
He whose tears over his beloved are not extravagance
لله في الأرض أقوام قد اشتملوا
There are people of God on earth
بيضاء واضحة الترائب غادة
Bright and fair of form is Ghada
يا هل شجتك برود الريق حواء
O lips moist with spittle, delicate, tender maiden
ألا إنني في نعمة ومسرة
Behold, I live in bounty and delight
أيا سوقا فلو صورت شخصا
O marketplace, if you were a person
تعلم العلم حقا يا فتى عمر
Learn knowledge truly, O youth of my life
ثلاث فساد الدين عند اتباعها
Three things corrupt religion when followed
ثلاث تغطى العيب عمن يحوزها
Three conceal a man's faults from others' eyes:
نهني بك الأعياد إنك عيدها
We celebrate the holidays for you are their feast
أكلف نفسي الصبر بعد فراقكم
I bid myself to have patience after your absence
ثلاث هلاك المرء فيهما فخلها
Three things destroy a man: uncontrolled rage,
خليلى هل بعد السنين الغوائر
My beloved, after the long lost years
منعت مقلتى لذيذ الرقاد
My eyelids were denied the sweetness of slumber,
إن يوم الفراق كان شديدا
The day of parting was so hard
بعادك يا عذب الثنايا ولا الصد
Your distance, O sweet of intimacy, or disdain
قفوا قلنا في ربع ليلى مواقف
Stop, we said, in the ruins of Layla's dwellings,
وعليك نفسك لا تعب أحدا ولا
Do not burden anyone with yourself, do not accept injustice even if they insult and rebuke you.
ثلاث تقود الصعب وهي حميدة
Three lead to hardship yet stay virtuous,
ورد الكتاب من الكريم المفضل
The book arrived from the generous, preferred
سكرنا بخمر الشوق والبعد والنوى
We were intoxicated by the wine of longing, separation, and determination
وحباك الإله ملكا وإنصالا
God gifted you kingship and splendor
الموت أبكى جملة الأقوام
Death made all the people weep,
ستسقى قوافي الشعر بعدى وأعظمى
My poetry's rhymes will be irrigated after me, though I decay
ثلاث بهاء الوجه تذهب سرعة
Three things in beauty their charm quickly cease -
عسى الله بعد البين يجمع بيننا
May God, after this separation, reunite us again
بحر الفصاحة غاض يا إخواني
The sea of eloquence has withdrawn, O my brothers
إني بفضل من الله ذو دعة
By the grace of Allah I live in ease,
هجرت بعدك العيون الرقادا
After you left, eyes abandoned sleep
إذا بلغ الفتى سبعين عاما
When a young man reaches seventy years
قد قضى لي بالصد والهجر والبلوي
He has decreed estrangement, avoidance, and affliction for me
إن كنت قد عدت إلى العافيه
If you have returned to good health
بموت المرتضى الواكي الرضى
With Al-Murtada’s death, every devoted follower grieved,
ثقيل على كل الورى من تكبر
Heavy upon all mankind is he who is arrogant,
إليك لقد جربت كل بلية
I have endured every misery,
فلا تحسبن البعد يمحو ودادكم
Think not that distance can efface fond thoughts,
أبيت ولى قلب قريح من البكا
My heart is wounded, crying throughout the night,
بوركت بنية وقد بارك الله
Blessed is the girl, and God has blessed
بنينا بجنب الروضة الآن مسجدا
Beside the garden we have built a mosque,
يا حبذا بستان قيس الكامل
O what a wonderful garden is that of Qais the perfect,
فأنا المقر بذا ولكن ليس لي
Though I am drawn to it, I have no care
أرى البان أبدى الميس تيها قوامه
I see the full moon, wandering aimlessly
إذا ما حباك الله يوما بثروة
If Allah blesses you one day with wealth
أنت يا مقلتي أسقمت حالي
You, my desire, have made me ill
ألا فاذكرا العهد الذي كان بيننا
Oh remember the covenant that was between us
سلام وتسليم وألف مسرة
Greetings of peace and salutations, a thousand delights
أبلعرب الملك الإمام العادل
O noblest of Arabs, just Imam,
خليلي إن الهم والحزن خيما
My friend, grief and sadness have descended
ثلاث يعيش المرء فيها مكرما
Three things make a man live honored:
ما حاجتي في ذم أهل زماني
Why should I blame people of my time
سلام وتسليم بدا وثناء
Greetings of peace and devotion are manifest, and praise
ما حذرن الدنيا كما تحذر الحية
The world never warned like a snake
دعوه يبكى دما ودمعا
Let him cry tears of blood and weeping
أنت الحبيب المرتضى ولك الهنا
You are the beloved, the chosen one, and joy belongs to you
صب تحرقه أسى لرعاته
My love burns with sorrow for his gazelle,
سرى ونسيم الحاجزين يلاطف
The morning breeze blows gently
قد كان قلبي قبله متحيرا
My heart was lost and wandering
أنا مذ نشأت بسيبكم مغمور
Since my youth, I have been immersed in your generosity,
يتم سروري إن رأيتك مقبلا
My joy is complete when I see you coming,
لا شغل لي في أول أو حاضر
I have no concern for past or present,
سلام جزيل نير اللفظ شارق
A warm greeting that illuminates speech
رحلتم والمدامع في انسكاب
You left while tears flowed
إن أبطأ المرء في وعد وفي عدة
If a man is late in keeping a promise or appointment
لقد قال طرفى للفؤاد شغلتني
My eyes said to my heart, "You have preoccupied me!"
غزال غزا قلبي بخيل صدوده
A gazelle has raided my heart with the spears of his eyelashes,
يا ذا النوال الغادر
O you of generous disposition
عليكم وإن طال البعاد سلام
Peace be upon you, though we are far apart
أهنيك يا ابن الأكرمين الأطايب
I congratulate you, son of the most generous and purest,
وأشهى من الماء الزلازل وأعذب
A greeting like the breeze of musk, nay it is sweeter,
لقد عشت في ذا القرن خمسين حجة
I have lived fifty years in this life
توفى محمود الفضال ولينا
Our protector Mahmoud Al-Fiddaal has passed away
يا نهرا سميت بالأصغرين
O river named Al-Asgharain
ثلاث حلى للرجال فهاكها
Three ornaments for men, and here are their fruits
مذ مدة ما جاءنا
For a long time now,
سلام وتسليم وألف تحية
Greetings of peace, salutations and friendship abound,
سأصبر صبرا لا يشاكله صبر
I will have patience like no other's patience
يا بتعة فاقت ببه
O bliss that surpassed all places
أحب أهل العقول من الرعايا
Love the wise among the people
وقلت له لقياك خير علالة
I said to him, meeting you is better solace
أنفق من المال ما استطعت فذو
Spend from wealth what you are able
لقد آن أن توفي العهود السوالف
The oaths of old have come to pass
ورد الكتاب من الحبيب الواثق
The letter came from the faithful beloved
قد طال يا ليلى على نواك
Oh Layla, your estrangement has been long
وعدت فأوف يا قاضي الأنام
Fulfill your promise, O just judge of mankind
سلام كريح المسك بل هو أطيب
A greeting like the fragrance of musk, nay it is sweeter,
النون حاجبه والعين مقلته
His eyebrow is a nun, his eyelash a meem
ترفع عن الفعل الذي يضع الفتى
Rise above the act that debases a youth
يا سائلي عن حصن قريتنا لم
O you who ask about the fortress of our village, why not
قد جاء ذلك في القرآن معناه
That has come in the Quran, its meaning
هنيت بالنصر موعودا لك الظفر
You were promised victory, and triumph is destined for you.
لا خير في عجلة الإنسان يا ثقتي
There is no good in man’s haste, o my confidence
أتاني كتاب من شقيقى ووالدى
A letter came to me from my brother and father
يا أميم انظري عذاب المشوق
O Ameem, see the torment of the ardent lover,
كتابكم وافى إلينا فسرنا
Your letter reached us, bringing great joy
أسالم يا ابن مودودى فإني
Greetings, O son of Mawdudi, for I
من كان عند الله غالب
Whoever is victorious with God
إني لأعجب من أناس زماننا
I'm amazed at people of our time
لا تبخلن وأعط كلا حقه
Do not be stingy, give each their due rights
رحم الله من نأى ورمانى
May God have mercy upon him who turned away and left me,
يا ابن الإمام المرتضى
O son of the eminent Al-Murtaza
يا نفس أنت محادده
O soul, you are an adversary
وسلم إلى رب العلا وتوكلن
Submit yourself to the Lord of the High Throne, and rely
زها ورد خديها على الورد بهجة
Her cheek is a rose, her cheek's rose is joy upon roses
وبارق بعض العالمين نساءهم
Some people's lands light up, while their women are in despair.
أهدى السلام إلى الكريم المفضل
I send greetings of peace to the generous, distinguished one
إما فررت من العدى
Whether you fled from wrong
ثلاث تزيد المرء نورا وحكمة
Three things increase a person's light and wisdom
ما زلت في لهو وفي طرب وفي
I am still in play and joy and
يا زروة قد أورثت
O Zarwa, you have bequeathed
وأعط إذا أعطيت غير مبذر
Give generously when you give, not wastefully,
أأحبابنا منكم حياة لنا الوصل
Our loved ones, through you we have life, union is for us rest
مرت كخوط الخيزرانة غادة
She passed by like silk threads, Ghadah
بنينا بأرض الله لله مسجدا
We built on the land of God for God a mosque
تريد أن تشرب من مائنا
You wish to drink from our water,
نهنى إمام المسلمين بغرفة
We congratulate the leader of Muslims with a chamber
مني السلام على الولى الوالي
My greetings of peace to the guardian, the ruler
سلام كماء الورد ديف بعنبر
Greetings like rose water deep with ambergris
سقى بالمنحنى رسما وربعا
He watered with a curved vessel, drawing shapes and squares,
وإن شئت استباحة كل أمر
If you wish to make all matters permissible
ثلاث خصال يفسد الملك عندها
Three traits corrupt the rule when they prevail
ثلاث بهن المرء يزداد قوة
Three things give a man more strength
إن فقد الأهلين كان عظيما
The loss of loved ones was immense,
لك منزل في القلب لا يتغير
You have a place in my heart that never changes
عجلة الإنسان لوم
Blaming man's hastiness
سألت من الكريم من الرجال
I asked, who is the most generous of men
ولما قرعتم باب عتبى فتحته
When you knocked on the door of my affection, I opened it
أيها العاقل الذي شاء تزو
O wise one who wished for marriage
قيل لي أنت في مديحك تغلو
They said you go too far in your praise
لابد من بعد النوى من زورة
After hardship, relief must come
اليوم قد جاوزت من
Today I have passed
فما لفظة من فيك تلفظ دائما
No word uttered by you but thousands repeat,
ورمتني الأيام أو
Time has afflicted me, or
لو كان أبخل في الورى من مادر
Were the stingiest man on earth to covet my generosity,
فصم عن نسيب الغواني ولا
Turn away from the pleasures of youth, do not
قضى اللّه فيما بيننا بقرابة
Allah has decreed kinship between us
أكرم بمن يسأل سؤاله
Honor the one who asks with his question
درويش يا ذا الخلفة الشوهاء
O Darwish, you of despicable character
أعوذ بك اللهم من فقر ساعة
أرى الدنيا وزخرفها غرورا
خذ نصيبين من صفاء السرور
ثلاث تزيد الوجه نورا ونضرة
يا أيها الملك المرجى فضله
وذو الحلم لا تقذى الأراجيف قلبه
بنينا وشيدنا بناء معمدا
القلب طرسى والدموع مدادي
وكم من فتى يسعى ويحرم دائبا
حبيب لو أن الأرض تخبر بالذى
شمر الذيل وبادر للعمل
القلب صار من الفراق عليلا
قد قال قوم بأن الخير مجتمع
حي المعاليم والرسوما
توفى راشد والى الإمام
ثلاث إذا ما المرء في الدهر حازها
برق أضا من أيمن الجرعاء
إن الذي نهواه منك لحاضر
أطلق لسانك ما تشا
أنا بحر هجو إن أردت جفائي
أتاني كتاب من محب مصاحب
ثنتان لا تنساهما واذكرهما
أتاني كتاب من سليل محمد
ورد الكتاب فسرني
توفى ركن الدين والعلم والهدى
توسدي براثن الحيات تضطرب
لك الفضل يا مولاى والحمد والشكر
لمي بوادى المنحنى طلل قفر
جار الحبيب على الكئيب ببعده
يقولون إن الصبر للمرء عدة
أتانى كتاب منك فاستر خاطرى
ألا قل لذى حمق تسربل بالغدر
مهما جرى حين مل الوصل مت هوى
ثقيل لو أن الأرض تعقل صاحبى
إذا ما بدا برق بنعمان لامع
إذا أقبلت دنيا تقاد بشعرة
إليك فعيني دمعها ليس يقلع
أبلعرب الملك الهمام العادل
شربت شمولا من شتيت مشوبة
ملك بدا ما به زيغ ولا خطل
سلام يسلى الفؤاد الشغيل
هاكم من أخى وداد سلاما
مشايخنا مصابكم عظيم
أيا عين جودى بالدموع السواجم
لا خير في مستقبل أو حاضر
ألا فاعذراني إن عتبت عليكما
ثلاث يحار العقل عند نزولها
نهيم بهم وجدا ونحن بقربهم
حاز المحاسن من خلق ومن خلق
توفى بحر الجود والزهد والتقى

بنى مصعب أنتم أولو العلم والهدى
دمعي جرى يوم بان الحي من إضم
أأخاف من ريب الزمان وصرفه
