1. Death made all the people weep,
And saddened all the rulers,

2. And lamented constantly in places of rest,
At every station and position.

3. It made all creation drink a bitter cup,
And made them taste a drink of poison.

4. After pleasure and bliss it showed them
Misery, and clothed them in garments of sickness.

5. With the death of the faithful, the benevolent,
The generous, the gracious and the benefactor,

6. Of merit, broad chested, reverent,
Of generosity, reverence and respect,

7. Of honor, noble lineage, protector of the sacred,
Of justice, good deeds and wise judgements.

8. That firm one against the enemy, his face
Shining towards the people of religion and Islam.

9. That ascetic trustee, the content, devout,
The worshipper, the deep, high rising ocean.

10. The scholar, the flag, the teacher who taught us
Knowledge from the All-Knowing.

11. I mean by that Rashid, the offspring of the excellent youth,
Khalaf son of Rashid the lofty faithful one.

12. That generous, sweet, pure one whom
Even enemies acknowledged with honor.

13. That one of whom all people said:
“This is the pure, generous one, generous to all the generous.”

14. “This is the sacred person, son of Rashid,
Free of any inward or outward blemish.”

15. “This is the pure justice, son of Rashid,
Free of all grave sins and offenses.”

16. O reviver of many through his generosity,
Rather, o killer of poverty and destruction.

17. O supporter of the weak, rather o refuge
Of the poor, o guardian of orphans.

18. O master of masters, essence of companions,
Rather, o Kaaba of Islam.

19. O role model of princes, elite of ministers,
Rather, o leader of leaders.

20. Your calamity has spread throughout the lands,
The day has worn black garments because of it.

21. O eye of my generosity, I will cry for you
With flowing tears that are not forbidden.

22. I see weeping for you as an obligation
And it is my duty to show grief.

23. Since God exalted his status
And chose him from all the people,

24. The one who in all creation resembled Him
In both gentleness and firmness,

25. In justice, wisdom, management,
Planning, resolve and judgments.

26. His will could not be opposed,
His view like the blow of a sword.

27. I cry for you, whose justice and gifts
Spread through cities up to Syria.

28. I cry for you, cave of orphans and people,
With tears flowing like rain clouds.

29. My regrets will remain as long as I live,
Seen in you before I even speak.

30. Death burned my brain and guts,
Melting my joints and bones.

31. Death saddened me and spoiled my life
With the loss of the full moon, after perfection.

32. Death made me cry with its arrival,
After clarity, upon the high noble one.

33. Death extinguished every shining light,
And dried up every deep ocean.

34. True are the words of the wise one who said:
“This world is no place of permanence.”

35. All its pleasures and the joy of living in it
Are but motes of dreams.

36. They follow each other to their deaths intentionally,
Like feet following feet.

37. So reflect, you who are astray, remember,
As long as your souls are still in your bodies,

38. Before the silencing of your voices,
And the bitterness of death and illness,

39. And the arrival of Azrael in your skulls,
And the humiliation of disease and suffering.

40. I never imagined that the full moon would be buried in the ground,
And I see it wrapped in shrouds and rags.

41. Watering a grave that contained a bountiful ocean,
That I watered with the poison of clouds.

42. Watering the grave that contained the best just one,
And steadfast supporter and lasting companion.

43. Watering the grave that contained the best of our governors,
The most virtuous or devoted faster.

44. Watering the grave that contained the best righteous one,
The imam of justice - and he is the best imam.
