1. The letter came from the faithful beloved
By Allah, Lord of the worlds, the Creator

2. The letter came from my devout brother
Of guidance's knowledge, offspring of the gracious connoisseur

3. People of intelligence, eloquence and guidance
And my brother of fluency and honest words

4. Son of intimate friends whom I knew
As people of resolve and loyalty

5. Son of those whose deeds are appreciated
Among people both east and west

6. I mean the prudent, wise, chosen one
And brother of acceptance, people of excellence of old

7. His noble nature almost redeems him
Yet he is the ruin of every hypocrite

8. Nobler than a companion or befriender
Kinder than a true or loyal friend

9. When his writing and letter reached me
Like fresh, gentle, scintillating pearls

10. My eyes shed tears remembering
A past time in the lofty place

11. I opened its seal and unfolded it
And recognized it was from my master and confidant

12. I will perpetually express the gems of my speech in reply
And the fluttering of my heart like the throbbing heart

13. Then for days I was confused by it
My thoughts roaming with a choking heart

14. And I, the poet, counted myself skillful
In poetry, Lord of rarities and subtleties

15. But I see leaving the reply foolish
And I say leaving no response is the way of the apostate

16. Forgive and pardon me for being pretentious
Yet I succeeded in it by the aid of the Sustainer
