لا تحسبي شيب رأسي أنه هرم
Do not think my grey hair is due to old age,
خير المواطن حيث هذا الأروع
The best of citizens where this most wondrous one abides,
يا مزنة الحي يحدو عيسها الحادي
O beauty of life, your charm makes the lovesick sing
بين اللوى وحزيز الأجرع العقد
Between al-Lawá and Ḥazíz al-Ajra‘ al-‘Aqid
كل يوم لنا هناء جديد
Every day brings us new joy
أجدكما لو أنصف الصب عاذله
I find that if fate were fair to the one who blames it
ذكر الصبا بعد شيب الراس تعليل
Recalling youth after gray hair is folly,
لمن دمنة مثل خط الزبور
For whom is there a constitution like the line of bees,
لو كان ينفع في الزمان عتاب
If reproach availed in this age, I would reproach it while it babbles
قد كنت لست بناطق فتكلم
Though you were not speaking, speak now,
سألنا الربع لو فهم السؤالا
We asked the desert, had it understood the question,
لأية حال حكموا فيك فاشتطوا
For what purpose have they judged you and become enraged?
إذا العارض الوسمي جاد فأسبلا
When the clouds pour down
عش مهنا بكل خير مملا
Live well and nobly, exalted
يا خليلي هل تجيب الطلول
O my friend, do soft winds answer
لازال يرفعك الحجى والسؤدد
Still do your excellence and nobility raise you
أحلما تبتغي عند الوداع
I dream while bidding farewell
لازال سعيك مقبلا مقبولا
Your efforts are still forthcoming and accepted
دليل على إقبالك السلم والحرب
The peace and the war are proof of your strength
ما قدم البغي إلا أخر الرشد
Injustice hastens not success, but right's delay,
برق تألق في الظلام وأومضا
A lightning flashed in the darkness and flickered,
بصحة العزم يعلو كل معتزم
With determination, every determined person rises
همو ضمنوا الوفاء فحين بانوا
They promised loyalty, but when they showed their true colors
عرج فحي منازل الأحباب
He passed by the dwellings of friends
أجد الصبر بعدكم امتناعا
Patience has become utterly unyielding since you left,
عج بالديار دوارس الأعلام
The abodes of glorious flags became desolate,
طرقت بعد موهن أسماء
After weakness, Asma visited
يا من ملوك الدنيا له تبع
O you whom the kings of this world follow
أقول وقد أشرفت ذات عشية
I say, as I looked out one evening
منك الجميل ومني الشكر
From you comes grace, and from me comes gratitude
مالي وللفصحاء لا تتكلم
Why should I care for eloquent speech when chatter abounds without rhyme or reason revealed,
ما العز إلا في عوالي الرماح
Glory comes from spear tips thrust,
تتفاوح العرصات طيبا كلما
The meadows spread fragrance whenever
أضحت حبالك يا سمي رثاثا
Your ropes have become ragged, O Summya
لك الخير هل أنساك شحط النوى عهدا
For you all the good, have I forgotten our distant youth?
أتهيم بساكنة البرق
I wander aimlessly in the stillness of lightning
ذري عذلي فشانك غير شاني
Leave my love be, for your beauty is unparalleled,
جادت يداك إلى أن هجن المطر
Your hands were generous until the rain was polluted,
أما إنه لولا الحسان الرعابيب
If it were not for the affections of loved ones
عش حقبة لا تنتهي بل تبتدي
Live a never-ending era that just begins
أمرضتني مريضة اللحظ سكرى
The glance of a beautiful maiden has made me lovesick
قدمت سعيدا فائزا خير مقدم
You came happy, successful, with the best arrival,
ظهر الهدى وتجمل الإسلام
Guidance has emerged and Islam has become beautiful
ديار الحي مقفرة يباب
The abodes of the living are desolate, O youth
دار بنيناها وعشنا بها
A house we built and lived in
إذا المرء لم يرض ما أمكنه
When one is not content with what is possible
سقى محلا قد دثر
He watered a place draped
أهاجتك أطلال الكثيب الدوارس
Ruins of the hillock stirred you, the whirling sands,
عش مدى الدهر ظافرا بالأماني
Live your life victoriously attaining your wishes,
سقت أندية القطر
The rain clouds watered the lands of life with abundant rain,
ربوع لكم بالأجر عين وأطلال
Spacious lands where ruins with fountains lie,
منا الثناء ومنك الصيب الغدق
The praise is from us, and the plentiful rain is from you,
قل للغمام إذا استهل صبيره
Tell the clouds, when their rain pours down
سلام كنشر المسك فض ختامه
His peace spreads like musk when its seal is opened
وليلة غابت بها النحوس
And a night when misfortunes were absent
أما الإمام فقد وفى بمقاله
The imam fulfilled his word,
من عظيم البلاء موت العظيم
From the great afflictions is the death of the great man
ما ضر من حدت النوى أجمالها
He who the tribe's youth has enchanted gains naught
يا منزل الأحباب كنت أنيسا
O dweller of the abode where loved ones lived
لا زال سعيك مقرونا به الرشد
Your endeavor remains guided by wisdom
كذا لا تزال رفيع الرتب
Thus you remain, of high rank
لا زلت حلف سعادة وبقاء
You still swear to happiness and permanence
أبى لك الله إلا رفعة الأبد
God has decreed for you nothing but eternal glory
ذكر الشباب فهاجه التذكار
The memory of youth stirred him
عديني منك هجرا أو فراقا
You estranged me, or parted from me
لقد أودعوه لوعة حين ودعا
They left him with sorrow when they bid farewell,
أي الملوك سعى فأدرك ذا المدى
Which king has endeavored and attained this glory,
يا ملكا عطلت مكارمه
O king, whose generosity
جزعت وما بانوا فكيف وقد بانوا
You grieved though they had not yet departed; yet how will it be when they are gone?
هاج الوقوف برسم المنزل الخالي
The abodes of solitude aroused my passion though it was not my intent
طرقت أمامة والعيون نيام
Umma walked by while eyes were sleeping
جميلك لا يجزيه شكري ولا حمدي
Your beauty my gratitude and praise cannot suffice,
سل المنزل الغوري أين خرائده
Ask the abode of Ghawr, where are its gazelles
يهني إمام الفضل فضل إمامه
The excellence of the Imam of excellence is proven by his own excellence,
قد كان صبري عيل في طلب العلا
My patience in seeking exaltation was long
أمثل قرواش يذوق الردى
Like a sparrow sipping dew,
العلم بعد أبي العلاء مضيع
Knowledge after Abul 'Ala has gone to waste
عوجا نحي ربوعا غير أدراس
Wandering we roam gardens unknown,
كفي ملامك فالتبريح يكفيني
Enough blaming me, for giving up is enough for me,
لو شئت أقصرت من لومي ومن عذلي
If you had wished, you would have shortened my blame and my rebuke
أبى قلبه من لوعة الحب أن يخلو
His heart refused to be devoid of the agony of love,
زارتك بعد الكرى زورا وتمويها
After the caravan had departed, she paid you short, fleeting visits,
وقفنافكم هاج الوقوف على المغنى
We stopped, and how long did we stop, grieving for the beloved!
كفيت العدى ووقيت الردى
You have been spared the harm and kept safe from ruin
ألم الخيال بنا موهنا
Imagination has afflicted us, weakened,
زاره الطيف زورة في منامه
The phantom visited him in a dream
سقى الطللين بين المنحرين
He irrigated the two hills between the two sanctuaries,
سرينا وهضب من سنير أمامنا
We travelled, with hills of Sannir before us,
طيف ألم قبيل الصبح وانصرفا
An apparition pained me just before dawn then left
هوى الشرف العالي بموت أبي يعلى
The great honor fell with the death of my father Ya'la
عش للمكارم يا كريم المغرس
Live for virtues, O noble one of lofty character
صبا قلبي إلى زمن التصابي
My heart yearns for the time of youth
رأيت ملوك الأرض في كل بلدة
I saw the kings of the earth in every land,
سقيت الحيا أيها المنزل
O dwelling, life has watered you,
أوجهك أم بدر من الغرب لائح
Your faces, are they the full moon rising in the west, radiant,
سرى طيف هند والمطي بنا تسري
The vision of a beautiful Indian girl passed by
لقد أطاعك فيها كل ممتنع
Indeed in it every reluctant one obeyed you
هل تعرف الربع الذي تنكرا
Do you know the quarter that was disguised
عش من صروف الدهر في أمان
Live safely through the vicissitudes of fate,
لو أن دارا أخبرت عن ناسها
If a house could speak of its dwellers
لسيفك بعد الله قد وجب الحمد
لا تسرفي في هجره وصدوده
أبل خير الملوك من ألمه
أهوى وحر جوى بكم وفراق
أبى القلب إلا أن يهيم بها وجدا
إن الأرانب لم تفتك لأنها
بي من رسيس الحب ما تريان
أهلا بطيف خيالها المتأوب
خير الأحاديث ما يبقى على الحقب
ربع تعفت باللوى عهوده
هل بعد شيبك من عذر لمعتذر
يا ظبي ذاك الأجرع المنقاد
ألا ما لقلبي كلما ذكرت هند
لج برق الأحص في لمعانه
يا ليل طلت وطال الوجد والكمد
أحسنت ظنك بالإله جميلا
سلام يثقل البزل النواجي
لو أن من سأل الطلول يجاب
سقى الله بالأجرعين الديارا
كم تكثران العذل والتفنيدا
لقد أيدت كف لها منك ساعد
أهاجك باللوى الربع الخلي
أهاج لك التبريح إيماض بارق
صيامك للمهيمن ذي الجلال
أنظر إلى الغيث الذي نطفا
ألمت حين لا ومني الهجود
لاتخدعنك بعد طول تجارب
صبرت على الأهوال صبر ابن حرة
أتجزع كلما خف القطين
أبت عبراته إلا انهمالا
أشد من فاقة الزمان
بكت علي غداة البين حين رأت
