1. From you comes grace, and from me comes gratitude
To me belongs riches, and to your glory belongs mention

2. You enrich me, and I eulogize the earnest striving man
And hope in you, as time writes down

3. I do not deny the blessings you have bestowed bountifully
I am but one you have drowned, O sea

4. Your blessings are blessings I do not show ingratitude for
Surely ingratitude for kindness is itself ingratitude

5. O my articulation—may you be blessed, though bearing
From me reward, and may poetry be blessed

6. Increase me in wealth, and increase the Emir in praise
I have no excuse before him, nor do you

7. He gave without going back on his word or breaking his promise
And pardoned, so there is no resentment or rancor

8. He has a nature like a meadow that sorrow has caused to grow
The bending of his arm and the pouring rain, bountiful

9. And a generosity of spirit innate to the generous man
Neither miserliness nor betrayal can be his traits

10. You are drowned in his noble deeds
As if the sea had drowned the shore with its waves

11. Its flanks clothed in rippling folds
With flowers laughing in between, arrayed in every hue

12. So his light is his blessings, and the one who praises him
Is the Emir’s nobility and his spreading fame

13. He has sent me to tell you of a brother you can trust
Whose light shines on the forehead of travelers by night

14. The roads of the land feel safe with him, so there is no
Panic, alarm, or fear

15. And he built Qais nobility with the canal
That neither Jusham nor Bakr built

16. A nobility that fires surround to protect
And eagles and griffins guard

17. As for the impregnable fortresses, they have been made
Impregnable by a tender youth who calls down rain

18. Sweet of manners and disposition, with neither
Arrogance, self-importance, or pride

19. Taxes are collected for him in full—no sin or burden in them—
With justice that encompasses both worlds, lest reward be lost

20. The traits of nobles, and a zeal that has reached
Where the black crow reaches in flight

21. And a valor neither Aamir attained fully
Nor Amr, in whom valor was perfected

22. If it were in a lion, it would have no fangs or claws
Glory to the Creator of every marvel—

23. Can this breast contain all this?
Capacious is He who contained the two worlds, a capaciousness requiring no rest

24. And in the wilderness, a glorious man has made
The eternally desolate places settle

25. They inclined toward him on their mounts, as
The wine inclines toward the one who drinks it

26. And with them it swayed gently
Like a pregnant camel, a brown hyena

27. It walked with a rolling gait, and the journey folded its ribs
Until it resembled it and the oryxes wandering in the yellow lands

28. So it plummeted, straightening its neck in the lands
As the wild ass straightens its neck

29. We said to it, as the journey spurred it on
And our whips were red from rebuking it:

30. “Patience, until you reach Aleppo, where you will be praised,
And patience itself will be praised”

31. And it flung us at the feet of a king
Whose gifts make even the rich needy

32. Delegations are guided to his noble deeds
By a tender youth whose radiance shines above him

33. The full moon appears and reappears
And one doubts which of the two is the moon

34. One of tranquil hands, their palms and backs green
If the pride of kingship touched them

35. It would make even rock blossom
Wonders! Do not his cool hands become clouded

36. As ten clouds gather over his palms?
O pride of the kingdom of the Prophet's family, and one

37. Through whom victory for his sword was completed!
You have become a crown for kings, so if

38. You fall, you rightly deserve their pride
So be content with the titles of the Imam, for the Imam

39. Is content, as are you and the young heroes
They are seven flowers you were singled out for

40. And likewise the stars, there are seven flowers
You are al-Muʿizz, and this is Aleppo

41. So flow copiously, for each of you is a sea
Ibn Hani has lied in his statement

42. You are al-Khasib, and this is Egypt
But who is al-Khasib and who are his ilk?

43. For you belong the pride, not for them
They preceded as the darkness precedes and the dawn comes

44. When you came in its wake
And likewise smoke precedes fire, but

45. Smoke passes, and embers flare up
You have rendered the mention of those before meaningless—they

46. Have no mention, nor their time
Through you, the world and its inhabitants have been ennobled

47. And so the fast, the feast, and the breaking of the fast
May you be divinely protected forever!

48. For as long as you wish, may your life be extended!
You wake and sleep in splendor

49. And upon you, from the Lord of the Exalted Ones, is protection
Talk of you circulates in the lands, so there is no need

50. For perfume or fragrance
My praise is strands of jewels composed together

51. And your sublime status has inexhaustible vigor
No man will be tempted to sin

52. By my words and swear they are sorcery
This is but some of what the Emir has freely given

53. Though this is verse, and that is prose
I wear robes darkened with ink

54. Their price the paper and the ink
From one from whom I have favors

55. Innumerable, and abundant talents
I have resolved never to keep for myself

56. A store, for the openhandedness of your hands is my store
And praise does not remain for anyone—

57. No splinter or leaf remains for him
