Like a sparrow sipping dew,

أمثل قرواش يذوق الردى

1. Like a sparrow sipping dew,
Friend, how shameless is the face of the dove!

١. أَمِثلُ قِرواشٍ يَذوقُ الرَدى
يا صاحِ ما أَوقَحَ وَجهَ الحِمام

2. Far be it from that face to know misery
Or be pelted with pebbles.

٢. حاشا لِذاكَ الوَجهِ أَن يَعرِف ال
بُؤسَ وَأَن يُحثى عَلَيهِ الرَغام

3. Far be it from that graceful brow
To be stripped of its beauty and grace.

٣. وَلِلجَبِينِ الصَلتِ أَن يُسلَبَ البَه
جَةَ أَو يَعدَمَ حُسنَ الوَسام

4. Alas, people lamented for the death of Majid,
Saying the noble has died.

٤. يا أَسَفَ الناسِ عَلى ماجِدٍ
ماتَ فَقالَ الناسُ ماتَ الكِرام

5. Not far, O Far One,
Nor despicable, O Faithful Protector.

٥. غَيرُ بَعِيدٍ يا بَعِيدَ المَدى
وَلا ذَميمٍ يا وَفِيَّ الذِمام

6. You stumbled, so neither is the palace joyful,
Nor is your gate thronged with crowds.

٦. زُلتَ فَلا القَصرُ بِهِيُّ وَلا
بابُكَ مَعمُورٌ كَثِيرُ الزِحام

7. Nor are the white tents pitched,
Blessed are you who pitched those tents.

٧. وَلا الخِيامُ البِيضُ مَنصُوبَةٌ
بُورِكتَ يا ناصِبَ تِلكَ الخِيام

8. Evil upon a world that destroyed its people
And took them in gaining wreckage.

٨. قُبحاً لِدُنيا حَطَّمَت أَهلَها
وَآخَذَتهُم بِاكتِسابِ الحُطام

9. It takes what it gives, so why do we
Prolong conflict in what does not last?

٩. تَأخُذُ ما تُعطي فَما بِالُنا
نُكثِرُ فِيما لا يَدُومُ الخِصام

10. O Qarwash's grave, you were watered with life
And no floods of destruction swept over you.

١٠. يا قَبرَ قَرواشٍ سُقِيتَ الحَيا
وَلا تَعَدَّتكَ غَوادِي الرِهام

11. He passed and I have not passed in his wake,
For I am modest towards those I owe gratitude.

١١. قَضى وَلَم أَقضِ عَلى إِثرِهِ
إِنّي لِمَن مَعرُوفِهِ ذُو احتِشام

12. I recite poetry while love preoccupies me,
How strange that the words came out coherent.

١٢. أَقُولُ شِعراً وَالجَوى شاغِلِي
يا عَجَباً كَيفَ اِستَقامَ الكَلام
