1. And a night when misfortunes were absent
And cups and goblets made their rounds
١. وَلَيلَةٍ غابَت بِها النُحُوسُ
وَدارَتِ الأَكوابُ وَالكُؤُوسُ
2. As if they were not worshipped by Magians
The stable mind of the young man was lost
٢. كَأَنَّها ما تَعبُدُ المَجُوسُ
عَقلُ الفَتى الثَبتِ بِها مَخلُوسُ
3. As if he was bitten by a rabid one
And a dwelling he was used to residing in
٣. كَأَنَّهُ مِن فَرَجٍ مَمسُوسُ
وَمَنزِلٌ مُستَوطَنٌ مَأنُوسُ
4. Where the protected King was destroyed
In a garden in which branches blossomed
٤. نُودِمَ فيهِ المَلِكُ المَحرُوسُ
في جَنَّةٍ زَهَت بِها الغُرُوسُ
5. With gentle boughs that incline
As if when the fawn inclines
٥. أَغصانُها مُونِقَةٌ تَمِيسُ
كَأَنَّها حينَ تَمِيسُ العِيسُ
6. It was shaken by exile and oppression
To a young man, some of whose peers are wise
٦. رَنَّحَها التَهجِيرُ وَالتَغلِيسُ
إِلى فَتىً بَعضُ عِداهُ الكَيسُ
7. His love was mixed with souls
The caged bird praised him
٧. قَد مُزِجَت بِحُبِّهِ النُفوسُ
أَثنى عَلَيهِ الطائِرُ المَحبُوسُ
8. And the peacock swaggered in his orchard
With suns rising in its feathers
٨. وَاختالَ في دَوحَتِهِ الطاوُوسُ
طالِعَةً في رِيشِهِ الشُمُوسُ
9. O king, his envious enemies
And his foes are buried underneath the soil
٩. يا مَلِكاً حاسِدُهُ مَتعُوس
وَضِدُّهُ تَحتَ الثَرى مَرمُوسُ
10. He lived in pleasure without any troubles
Nor did misfortunes approach your happiness
١٠. إِنعَم وَلَذَّ لا عَراكَ بُوسُ
وَلا دَنَت مِن سَعدِكَ النُحُوسُ
11. For you are a planted seed of generosity
Pens and inkwells have affirmed
١١. فَأَنتَ غَرسُ الكَرَمِ المَغرُوسُ
أَقَرَّتِ الأَقلامُ وَالطُرُوسُ
12. That you are the leader, not the follower
١٢. بِأَنَّكَ الرَئِيسُ لا المَرؤُوسُ
