1. He watered a place draped
Between palms and stones
١. سَقى مَحَلاً قَد دَثر
بَينَ زَرُودٍ وَهَجَر
2. Or the folds of smooth dunes
As though when squeezed
٢. أَو طَفُ وَسْمِيّ البُكر
كَأَنَّهُ إِذا اِنعَصَر
3. From seeds or dripping
What flows from needleheads
٣. مِنَ الحَبِيِّ أَو قَطَر
ما دَقَّ مِن روسِ الإِبَر
4. The breeze blows to it, with flutes
A northern wind spreads
٤. هَبَّت لَهُ مَعَ السَمَر
صِرُّ شِمالٌ فَاِنتَشَر
5. Then hills and roars
Roaring rolls of maidens
٥. ثُمَّ تَلالا وَهَدَر
هَدرَ خَطاطيفِ البكَر
6. With every fine-haired hyrax
In the palm of a bending, diseased one
٦. بِكُلِّ مَشزُورٍ مُمَر
في كَفِّ أَلوى ذي أَشَر
7. When he shakes, it scatters
So it sparks a fire with flint
٧. حَزَوّرٍ حينَ جَفَر
يَنثِرُهُ إِذا اِنتَثَر
8. Your sparks with the striker, the dry
Near the heated oven
٨. فَيَقدَحُ القَفوُ الشَرَر
قَدحَكَ بِالمرخِ العُشُر
9. He circled it, the barren
Spring and autumn vanished
٩. لَدى القَليبِ المُحتَفَر
نَوَّخَ حَولَيهِ العَكَر
10. Shaking the leaves of plants
From the valleys and beds
١٠. غِبَّ رَبيعٍ وَصَفَر
يَنفِضُ أَهدابَ الوَبَر
11. Thus they are like mourning men
Wandering, turning their sight
١١. عَنِ الهَوادي وَالسُرُر
فَهُنَّ أَمثالُ الزُبُر
12. To ponds and meadows
Sweet water flows to them
١٢. هِيمٌ يُقَلِّبنَ النَظَر
إِلى حِياضٍ وَجُرَر
13. Until when water was hoarded
He led them, then turned away
١٣. يَسنى لَها عَذبٌ خَصِر
حَتّى إِذا الماءُ اِحتُكِر
14. As if on the sky's face
From its downpour when it descends
١٤. أَورَدَها ثُمَّ صَدَر
يُرى عَلى وَجهِ العفَر
15. A pool or river
Or frost on the burrow
١٥. مِن وَبلِهِ إِذا اِنحَدَر
إِمّا غَديرٌ أَو نَهَر
16. Like the eyes of cows
As if that rain
١٦. أَوِ الثَمادُ في النُقَر
أَمثالُ أَحداقِ البَقَر
17. When it began and poured
The renowned goat's hand
١٧. كَأَنَّما ذاكَ المَطَر
لَمّا اِستَهَلَّ وَاِنهَمَر
18. Of Qais and Mudar's spring
Rather, it is brighter and rounder
١٨. يَدُ المُعزِّ المُشتَهر
رَبيعِ قَيسٍ وَمُضَر
19. And vague, blocking harm
Nothing human inside
١٩. بَل هُوَ أَندى وَأَدَرّ
وَمَهمَهٍ جَمِّ الخَطَر
20. Its darkness, under wine
Hugging a cloak, like an old man
٢٠. ما فيهِ لِلأَنسِ أَثَر
ظَليمُهُ تَحتَ الخَمَر
21. As if, when it curled up
An old man who craved old age
٢١. يَحضُنُ دُرماً كَالأُكَر
كَأَنَّهُ إِذا وَكَر
22. Or an old monastery that unfurled
Carpets made of hair
٢٢. شَيخٌ حَبا مِنَ الكِبَر
أَو قَسُّ دَيرٍ قَد نَشَر
23. Until when hungry, it crept
To insects in a barren land
٢٣. مَسابِجاً مِنَ الشَعر
حَتّى إِذا جاعَ اِبتَكَر
24. Butterflies scattered
It feeds on them, what was dispersed
٢٤. إِلى هَبيدٍ في عُجَر
مُفَوَّفاتِ كَالحَبَر
25. Between the journey and trees
A desert I crossed the valleys
٢٥. يَقتاتُ مِنها ما اِنتَثَر
بَينَ السَفيرِ وَالشَجَر
26. In it with a hump, like a shovel
Like what's above the palm trees
٢٦. قَفرٌ تَعَدَّيتُ الغَرَر
فيهِ بِحُدبٍ كَالمِرَر
27. Melted from the journey's length
To a man who led mankind
٢٧. أَشباهُ ما فَوقَ النُخُر
قَد ذُبنَ مِن فَرطِ السَفَر
28. And was evil since he grew up and attained puberty
Either with benefit or harm
٢٨. إِلى فَتىً سادَ البَشَر
وَساءَ مُذ شَبَّ وَسَرّ
29. Like an undrawn, blunt sword
Superior being of creation
٢٩. إِمّا بِنَفعٍ أَو بِضُرّ
كَالسَيفِ لانَ وَبَتَر
30. From a better group of people
Beauty of nomads and settled
٣٠. أَفَخرِ مَخلوقٍ فَخَر
مِن نَفَرٍ خَيرِ نَفَر
31. People of pillar and house
Visit him, excellent visitation
٣١. جَمالِ بَدوٍ وَحَضَر
أَهلِ عُمودٍ وَمَدَر
32. And seek refuge in him from others
Seek refuge in a hole, if it saw
٣٢. زُرهُ تَزُر نِعمَ الوَزَر
وَعُذ بِهِ مِنَ الغِيَر
33. A poor man, it would not covet
Given joys without reluctance
٣٣. تَعُذ بِخَرقٍ لَو نَظَر
إِلى فَقيرٍ ما اِفتَقَر
34. As if opposing the full moon
It left nothing, neither halted nor stopped
٣٤. يُعطى اللُهى بِلا ضَجَر
كَأَنَّما عادى البِدَر
35. And never hoarded or stored
Anything but goodness of news
٣٥. فَلَم يَدَع وَلَم يَذَر
وَلا اِقتَنى وَلا ادَّخَر
36. That, and gratitude of one thankful
O son of racing steeds
٣٦. شَيئاً سِوى حُسنِ الخَبَر
ذاكَ وَشُكرِ مَن شَكَر
37. And criticizers of frontiers
And leavers in graves
٣٧. يا اِبنَ الطَراخينِ الغُرَر
وَالطاعِنينَ لِلثُغُر
38. Full of travels
My connection to you is overflowing favor
٣٨. وَالتارِكينَ في الحُفَر
مَنافِباً مِلءَ السِيَر

If we were silent, no loss caused
٣٩. وَصلُكَ فَضلٌ قَد بَهَر
شِعري وَشِعرَ مَن شَعَر
40. Dawn makes the observer needless
Of a witness, when it bursts forth
٤٠. فَلَو سَكَتنا لَم تُضَر
وَالصُبحَ يُغنيهِ النَظَر
41. O you, my poetry boasts of
Live forever, years of triumph
٤١. عَن شاهِدٍ إِذا اِنفَجَر
يا مَن بِهِ شِعري اِفتَخَر
42. Happiest in other holidays
Excuse a loyal one, if he could not attend
٤٢. عِش أَبَدَاً حِلفَ الظَفَر
وَاسعَد بِأَعيادٍ أُخَر
43. If he walked on sight itself
Towards you, would not risk harm
٤٣. وَاعذُر وَلِيّاً ما حَضَر
فَلَو مَشى عَلى البَصَر
44. You are most deserving of excuse
And dye for them white pearls
٤٤. نَحوَكَ لَم يَشكُ الضَرَر
وَأَنتَ أَولى مَن عَذَر
45. Carved under rock
Daughters of night and wakefulness
٤٥. وَاصبِغ لَها بِيضاً غُرَر
مَنحوتَةً تَحتَ الحَجَر
46. I fixed them from jaggedness
And from a chain of significance
٤٦. بِناتِ لَيلٍ وَسَهَر
قَوَّمتُهُنَّ مِن صَعَر
47. Thus they are like precious pearls
Thoughts plunged into them
٤٧. وَمِن سِنادٍ يُعتَبَر
فَهُنَّ أَمثالُ الدُرَر
48. In a sea's abyss that roared
Praises never borrowed
٤٨. غاصَت عَلَيهِنَّ الفِكَر
في لُجِّ بَحرٍ قَد زَخَر
49. And never enumerated
Pure from turbidity
٤٩. مَدائِحاً لَم تُستَعَر
وَلَم يَقَع فيها الحَصَر
50. Reminding you in a dusty era
Al-Qutami's praise overflows
٥٠. صافِيَةً مِن الكَدَر
تُنسيكَ في دَهرٍ غَبَر
51. And a land in which he visited
٥١. مَدحَ القُطاميّ زُفَر
وَبَلدَةً فيها زَوَر
