أإن ظعن الخليط ضحى فبانا
The morning sun revealed her weeping eyes
فت بين الرباب في العين صابا
My heart was captivated by the alluring glance of the maid's eyes
ما للشجى على برح الغرام يد
What sorrow for love preys on the deserted ruins
ربع أسماء إذ هي الأنس آلا
The quarters of Asma when they are intimacy, ever
أثار غريمى وشجا عقيلى
My beloved provoked my passion and made my reason ache
أبرق لاح من خلل الغمام
A flash gleamed through the clouds
أني على هيمى مى تلحاني
I am in passionate love with a beauty that entrances me,
إن للبين صولة وهجوما
The separation has ferocity and assault
لم أفن في الشاه إبلا لا ولا بقرا
I have not lost camels or cows in the king,
فأبؤر أبآر وآبار أبر
So I irrigate, water, and make fertile,
ألما بي على الربع القديم
When I pass by the old quarter
جموع الباب أبواب تعلم
The crowds at the door have learned to be doors
لقد نسخت الحانك اللحن كله
Your melodies have copied every tune
آي أطلال الأوداء
O ruins of affection
إن الذي أنكحتموه زينبا
The one whom you married to Zainab
أهل التليل للأنام محراب

نحبها نحب من يحبها
We love her, we love whoever loves her
تركت التي أهوي بجنب أغلت
I left the one I love by other charmers
تامت فؤادي من الألوان أربعة
Roses are red, violets are blue
فلا جزع إذا انفرادى قد يبدو
No fear if I'm alone, it seems
طرقتني نوار عند دكار
She visited me, at midnight, in an obscure place,
أبعد الشيب تبكى بالديار
After gray hair, you weep for the abodes
إن التحرز من شراب الغنفزى
Taking precautions from drinking gin
هو الموت صمصامة منتضى
Death is irrevocable fate condensed to strike
لقاؤك يا عبد الإله هو الشفا
Meeting you, O Abdal-Ilah, is the cure
الدهر فيه صروف
Time brings constant change
إن رمت نهج المصطفي خاليا
If you wish to follow the Prophet's path sincerely,
أبرق ما لمحت له ائتلاقا
A lightning flash whose glimmer I glimpsed
على شرب الأتاي القلب مالا
Over steaming tea cups, the heart inclines
إن لم تكن قد أحست البين من سلمه
If you wish not to shed tears
سبت لبه من بعد كبرته جمل
Her lustre faded after her prime, like a camel grown old,
يا خليلي من دون كل خليل
My friend beyond all friends
لا تلوماه في الهوى أو لوما
Do not blame him for passion, or blame
ألم يأن أن تجفو الصبا وتحلما
Has not the time come for impetuous youth to grow calm and mature,
لمعان البروق هاج الهموما
The lightning flashed and sorrows arose,
لعبت بعد ما انقضى الريعان
She played after youth had passed
أجدك أن بينهم أن آنا
I found that, verily, between them there was
عجبت لأسرة الحسن الدينا
I am amazed at the family of Al-Hasan Al-Din
بكاؤك في التغني هاج مني
Your weeping in song stirred in me
جموع الساحة إحفظها ثلاثا
The crowds of the courtyard preserve them three
جموع الدجن أدجان دجون
The gatherings of intimates are most affectionate
وبعد كالنفي إتباع الذي اتصلا
And after like denying is following what connected
أرى العذال في الهيمان لاموا
I see the young men in love's torment sighing
لاحت عهود اللوى للعين منك ألا
The hardships of longing for you shone in my eyes, lest
أعادك من أسماء عيد مشوق
Did a joyous feast restore you from oblivion’s names,
كثر الملام ولم أك لأواري
I was blamed much, though I did not mean to disgrace,
إن طيف الحبيب بعد الهجوع
The specter of my beloved after parting
يا رب عجل شفائى دونما تعب
O Lord, hasten my recovery without fatigue,
جموع الكهل كهلان كهلال
The old man's everything old, and aged
ثلاث ليال حين جاز ينير
Three nights when the moon passes, he who looks
غني يا عيش إن حين تغني
Sing, O life, for when you sing
ليعلم من تأمله بأنا
So that he who contemplates it may know
النائب المفعول إن يلقه
If the object finds its representative
مجذوب روح على صدق سليمان
A spirit enraptured in sincere solomonity
أراحت لقلبي عازب الهم والهوى
The solace for my heart from the passion of desire and love,
على الله في القصد المعول وحده
Upon Allah alone reliance in purpose is placed
زيارة آل الشيخ سعد أبيه
Visiting the family of Sheikh Saad's father
مختار هذا إن أتى
If this chosen one comes,
بالسب من يدعى ما ليس فيه حر
With insults, one falsely claims what is not in him,
بلغ سلامى إذا جئت البتول لها
Convey my greetings when you come to the young beauty
قد شاع في الناس بل في الصحف قد كتبا
It has spread among the people, nay in the papers it was written
أثار بلى دور الأحبة فينا
The dwellings of loved ones have stirred in us
سالت القطرة من كأسي التي
I asked the drop from my cup
أقسمت بالله ما لحظ الفتاة
I swear by God, the glance of a maid is not shame
وزنجية جاذبت جانب سرها
I drew near a black girl, alluring
ستهجى والهجاء له تليق
You will be insulted and insults befit you
أعائش إن تحقق منك بين
O Aisha, if estrangement occurs
وأشياوات جمع الشيء معها
Gathered things with them are yearnings
ما خاب من كان مشغولا بتدريس
He who busied himself with teaching
لئن تك لمتى شعثت زمانا
If you remain silent for a time
بذات الدخن أدورة بوال
With smoky ruins and abandoned dwellings
لله ما رضعت بنو صلاح
The sons of Salah gained from His breast
ألا حييا دور الحبيب واحيينا
Oh let us revive the dwellings of the beloved and revitalize
أشاقتك ورق اللوى هتفا
The leaves of the tamarisk pined for you,
في بعض شبه الزوايا اليوم آحاد
In some corners today there are dissenters
يا عارفا من كل فن
O knower of every art
أثارت دموعا كنت لن تستبيتها
You aroused tears I never thought would flow,
إن التي هام الفؤاد بذكرها
She whose mention enthralled my heart
يالدهر قمنا به في أمان
O time, with it we stand in safety
تركت الشاه خشية أن أكونا
I left the king fearing that we would be
رسم ربع بجانب الينبوع
A drawing of a quarter next to a spring
إلى ابن أما إمام البدو والحضر
To the son of the mother, the Imam of nomads and settlers
كم رب كف مليه
How many a hand uncalloused
يا مرسل الزرع إلى السالمه
O Sender of crops to salvation
كتب الآداب همت بها
The books of literature I was keen on
لصوتك في كل القلوب دبيب
Your voice stirs in every heart
رقاب العقل لو تدرين ما بي
If reason's necks could know what's inside me
لقيت شيخا بشبقاس وجارية
I met an old man in Shabqâs, and a maid;
أبا تيلميت إن لغزك واضح
Aba Telmit, your riddle is clear
تذكرني في اللون والطعم قطرة
A dewdrop in color and taste reminds me
لعمرك ما مقلاء عود عودها
By your life, the polished bat was never accustomed to its sanding
طبتنا اليوم عن ذكرى سعاد
Our gathering today was for the memory of happiness
سبت قلبي المليحة بنت فارا
The beautiful maiden, daughter of Fara, captivated my heart
أيا باب بيت العلم أنت به أدرى
O door of the house of knowledge, you are most knowing of it
لحا الله التجارة كلفتنا
Trade has burdened us
هذا الأتاي رقيق اللون في انكاس
This delicate colored athayy
ضيف البكاي إذا لم يكن ملكا
The guest of weeping, if he is not an angel
افرن متى تسجر ضراما مناكبك
When will your shoulders cease to bear their burden as captives do?
مني سلام إلى شيخي الذي جعله
My greetings to my sheikh whom the Lord of creation
عوجا العناجيج حتى تسالا الطللا
The beloveds bent their necks as the ruins were laid waste
أقلب لا يزال ولن يزولا
My passion remains unending, undying
إلهى إجعلن مغيا الجديدة منهلا
My God, make the new village a precious spring,
دمن الأحبة لو عصيت العاذلا
My beloveds, had you disobeyed the blamer
يا من جعلتم رضا المولى تجارتكم
O you who made pleasing the Master your trade,
ألا ليت شعري بعد شحط النوى هل لى
Alas! If only I knew, after the hardship of separation
يملؤني وعظا هزال بلال
The scrawny Bilal fills me with his preaching,
ألا أبلغ محمدا الإماما
Convey my greetings to Muhammad the Imam
كتاب فيه خطك فيه حظى
A book in which your handwriting, in it is my fortune
ألا عج من حيازيم المطي
Behold, how strange are the ruins of the dwellings
يس ترتيلها جزء من الدين
Reciting it is part of the faith
يا أحول العين لا تجنح إلى الدين
O you of twisted eye, do not incline towards religion,
رقيق اللون لأني
Pale in color is he
قد ملأ الأرض لى وعدا محمدون
The earth has filled for me with promise those who praise,
لغى حسان لم تك للنبيه
The poetry of Hassaan was not suitable for the Prophet
إن الأمين الفتى ابن السيد الددو
The honest young man, son of the generous lord
الكني إلى المعني بالنحو واللغى
He alludes to meaning through grammar and language
ألا يا جبرائيل نماك دود
O Gabriel! Your sleep was infested with worms
إسلم بوها لم أك عن هواك
I have surrendered, so cease your disdain
أعائش إن للدنيا صروفا
Aishah, the world has its ups and downs
يمم لحاجك سيب البحر أو ساخ
Head for your purpose whether across the sea or on land
جئت يوما محمد بن البشير
One day I came to Muhammad ibn Al-Bashir
أرى السجاد إن غنى تمنى
I see the carpet, if it sings, it wishes
يا أيها المرتدى أسنى الجلابيب
O you who wear the most splendid robes
برى جسمي المرور على المغاني
My body passed by the wineshops
إن ابن أحمد زايد سيدبه
The son of Ahmed Zayed is a leader
أيا شيخ الشيوخ بلا خلاف
O sheikh of sheikhs, with no dissent,
أرز كقفل بهمز أو بلاه بدا
A palm tree like a lock with a trigger or without one appeared
أيا علماء العصر دونكم حكما
O scholars of this age, you have passed a strange judgment, while remaining silent about its strangeness,
في ساخ راسخ طبع الشيخ متضح
The elder's steadfast nature shines clearly in discourse
قل لمن رام أن يحاول خطا
Tell those who wish to try a line
زرنا الفتى دود فال المقتفي الكرما
The youth visited us, so we welcomed him with smiles,
خليلى لا لا تبديبا لى التلكيا
My friend, do not reveal my misery to me
طربت لحضرة الشيخ الخديم
I rejoiced at the presence of the noble Sheikh,
كلف العيس بالسرى فذراها
Entrust the camel to go to Sura and leave her
إن أخلقت هذي الليالي خلقتي
If these nights have shaped my character
من قاس حمودا على الكامل
He who compares Hamoud to Al-Kamil
سرى الطيف من لبنى فهاج الضنى وهنا
The specter sailed from Lubna so longing was aroused, and here
ياقوت ياقوتة خلقة البشر
O ruby, O ruby mine, creation of mankind
يا يسلم اسلم من الرضوان بالدون
O Yaslam, submit with contentment though with less fortune.
وبأني قد تصفحت الورى
By my having traversed the lands
حمدنا إله العرش إذا جاءنا نكشا
We praised the God of the Throne when he came to us unexpectedly
حلفت برب العرش ما وكل امرؤ
I swear by the Lord of the Throne, no man was ever
أصبح القلب ذا هيام دخيل
My heart has become possessed with passionate love
الأصل في الخبر أن لا يقترن
The rule is that predicate should not
جموع الصائم احفظها صيام
Gatherings of the one who fasts - preserve them, fasting
هذه البئر قنة جار كما أن
This well is a generous neighbor as though
لم يبد ما قد بدا لى الصوت والصيت
The sound and fame that appeared to me did not begin
مداح خير الورى لا زلت محسودا
Praise the best of mankind ever envied
هويت فقالوا لي تسل أو ارعو
They told me to forget or beware
جموع الثوب أثواب تعلم
A collection of garments are clothes that were learned
هاج ما اكتن من دفين الدار
The grief that was hidden in the ruins of the house overflowed,
أحاجيكم ما لحية غير كثة
I challenge you, what is a beard but abundant growth
هبت جويرية عذلا تجاريني
Jawiriyah reproached me with abandonment,
يقال للشمس الكسوف والخسوف
The eclipse and occlusion are said of the sun
رقاب العقل لا تنسى زماني
The necks of reason do not forget my time
إن جئت مسجد نجل الجيل صل معه
If you come to the mosque of the son of the generation, pray with him
ألما بى على دمن تذوب
My heart melts for a ruin where love dwells
أربة بيتى إن ظفرت فشنفي
My dwelling of four walls, rejoice if you obtain me,
سيبدو أن قاضينا الأمينا
Our righteous judge will surely appear
يا عاليا كل عال
O exalted one, exalted above all
تكبيرا لاتظني أن غانية
Do not think that any songstress
إلى ابن أبي النعامة والغراب
To the son of the ostrich and the crow
في اجتناب الأتاي للمرء ذام
There is merit for a man in avoiding blame
ليست صلاة العيد كالصلاة
The Eid prayer is not like other prayers
عراني غرام شفني وبراني
Passionate love has possessed and controlled me,
حق لهذا الشاي أن يوصفا
This tea deserves to be described
واسكب مدمع العينين وأذر
Pour the tears of the eyes and scatter
يا ويح للشاى لا تصفو مشاربه
Oh woe to the tea, its drinks do not clarify,
ورق الحمائم مذ غنت بأغصان
The leaves of doves have hung, since they sang in the branches
عطف الزمان على ظرف المكان بدا
The kindness of time upon the circumstance of place appeared
يا عجبا لقادر
O how strange for the Able One
رقاب العقل إن لنا ولوعا
The minds' necks are burdened with passion
أذكى حديث الغادة الماميضه
The blazing talk of the alluring roe
إن كان ربي أخفى الشيخ عن زمر
If my Lord concealed the sheikh from the groups
يا حاكم اعلم بأني أنت مستندى
O ruler, know that I rely on you
إذا رفع الموسى المذكي ضرورة
When the slaughterer raises the blade out of necessity
وإبريق بهى فيه شى
A pitcher with a luster in it, alluring
ألا إن أم الخير سلمى أبوبكر
Indeed, the mother of virtue is Salma, Abu Bakr,
آمنت من الخطوب أتيت طوبى
I have come to Tubaa, secure from afflictions,
أكمام جنبت لقاء الشدة
صبغت بدمع عاشقك الخدودا
تخطى ركبه الظلل القواء
أيا مطريا في مدحه الشيخ أحمدا
ويذكرني الأمين إذا بدا لي
لقد كان في التسجير نكشة نكشة
غني بشدوك لي تكيبر وذري
إذا كنت مشغولا بعلم الفرانس
قذف الشرق من بلاد الحياض
دعا للبين من أسماء داع
ألا وجب الفرار عن الجليلا
حى المنازل حول نهى الضال
جعلت بيننا الرباب النمو ما
وليمة لوم لمت على لقاها
يا بنت أمي المجد لا تؤمي
أدينك أن تذمى الخيزرانا
أبان اصطباري بين أم أبان
بريعة المنجنون
ناقص العقل من يعارض مرءا
سماحا سماحة سموحا سموحة
جموع اللحم لحمان لحام
واجمع على نور ونيران نيار
فجأة البين تستحف الحليما
وقفت على التليل فبت ليلى
إن كيهيدى من أشر البلاد
أبدلت راءها بظاء فتاة
وفرق ما جمعت ولو كثيرا
يا بنت أحمد يعقوب لعبت بنا
لم ير في كيص شبه
بأدورة الرباب قفش الركابا
أراني القبض لم أر فيه عابا
دار الشريف ابن أبي غالب
ألا أيها الأخوان أهل التأدب
يا أحمد العدل والإحسان حييتا
يا شيخ من أوصيتم بضيافتى
لقيت بني الشيخ الكرام عشية
أم النبي إذا ما أزمعت ظعنا
هلا وقفت برسم تلك الدار
إلى كم استهيم إلى سعاد
ياقوت أحسنت ما قد قلت بالعود
فما صوت جليت مع القوم في الند
أرى الفتى اليوم ذا صرف وأسفار
هاج إدكارى شادن بدكار
إذا النوار أعيتنا وعزت
أأن طرقت بعد التعذر والهجر
راق قلبي ومقلتي والطور
هذى نقول بنص الآي والأثر
من يقف ما قال كتاب الخضر
لعمري لقد كانت نفيسة قرة
رضا بالقضا إن المقادير ترتضى
لقد كنت أحجو الناس جل إختلافهم
أوفى بذمة ربع الريع أن تقفا
أشبهت والدك الأديب المصطفي
ما بال هذا المدمع الذارف
ألا إن عبد الحي في العلم فائق
إلى السارق المعروف بين بالخلائق
أتيتك قاضي البياضين والعجم
أهاجت لك الأشجان لمحة بارق
تأوبه الخيال وليس يألو
يا أيها الأحول أنت الأفضل
يا أيها القوم إني سائل ألكم
تقضت لبانات المحبة والوصل
لم يكن في إدارة الكأس ذم
أيا عين السلامة لا تنامى
سيدي إن جئته بعلك كثير
بدار محمد أنجاي أنخنا
أفاطم رب مرء مظهر شجنه
محمد المجنون إن نم أو غنى
إن أشهى ما تشتهى النفس بنا
أعاذلتي ويبكما دعاني
وأحوى في الملاحة ذي افتتان
تقفيت أزمانا مسيح زماني
وخود راق منها ما تراه
صلاة عيد من عليه الجمعه
صلاة الاستسقاء عند الحطمه
الوتر سنة لدى ابن يونس
صاحب الرحل والقلوص الرسوما
تجاوز قدر الذم ذا الفاسق الغوي
كنا إذا مسنا من دهرنا نكد
قال ابن عبدم مجيب السائل
