1. There is merit for a man in avoiding blame
For with it honored guests are welcomed

2. But ignoble guests are not pleased
With other than the worst of ignoble guests

3. So a resident is as a guest staying in a land
Where status does not diminish for him

4. A country where the cultured man's status lessens
Has not been a pleasant land for the cultured man to stay
