في الزهر جاء الصيام فاعترضت

أحمد الله الذي جنبني
I praise Allah who spared me
صديق لي بلي بحكيم سوء
A friend of mine is worn by an unwise talker
وألثغ يتجرا
With a lisping tongue
من قال بالمرد فاحذر إن تصاحبه
Whoever advocates for sodomy, beware of befriending him
لحبيبي شامة في خده
My beloved has a mole on his cheek
يقبل الأرض مشتاق يحاول أن
Longingly he kisses the ground, trying
مرت نساء كالظبا خلفها
Women passed by like gazelles behind her
أكل شعرك يبغي
I yearn to devour your hair
إذا ما قضى الله أمرا فمن
If Allah decrees a matter, who
لئن كانوا النجوم فأنت شمس
If they are stars, then you are a sun
يا ناقلا إلي قول حاسدي
Oh messenger carrying to me the words of my enviers
مولاي يا ذا المنظر الزاهر
My master, O you with the radiant appearance
إن كنت أبصرت مثلي
Roses are red
إن للرسام كفا
The painter owns a skillful hand
عدمتكم نصارى مصر كفوا
You abandoned the Christians of Egypt, so stop
أيا أرض الشمال فدتك نفسي
Oh land of the north, my soul I sacrifice for you
أحسن مدارة الورى
Be gentle with the world,
وخانه الفاجر ابن العلقمي إلى
The treacherous one, son of Al-Alqami, betrayed him
وصاحب قد جاءنا مهديا
A friend who came bearing gifts,
ضامن مكس قد أتى
A patched coat wearer has come
برغمي أن بيتكم يضام
Though you are wronged, and the judge and imam shun you,
اعتزل الناس ومل
Turn away from people and be done
أنا لو كنت مقلا
If I were a fire lighter
له قباء خلت تطريزه
He has a cloak whose embroidery I weave
كم حاسد لم يستبح حرمة
How many envious foes did not dare to violate
البيض مثل الثلج باردة
The fair ones are like snow, so cold,
يا سيدا ذكاؤه
O master of wisdom
اعتدى الدهر وادعى
Time behaved unjustly and claimed
ظننت أن مشيبي يصدني
I thought my grey hair
يا من حوى من فهمه
O you who encompasses in his understanding
جاءنا ملتثما مكتتما
He came to us veiled and silent
خشونة أهل العلم غير عجيبة
The harshness of the scholars is not surprising,
سألت دهري عروسا
I asked my fate for a bride
قل لمن لام لكوني
Say to him who blames my being
خلعت ثوب القضاء طوعا
I willingly cast off the robe of fate,
وأجبت من يلحى على ترك القضا
I have answered those who insist I abandon justice
قالوا حبيبك غصن بان
They said your lover is an insignificant branch
يا أيها الطاعون إن حماة من
O plague, you have reached the protectors
سألت بارئ النسم
I asked the Creator of the breeze
إن الوبا قد غلبا
The plague has overcome
بعدا لقاض تاجر
Away with the judge who is a merchant
لقد أصبح الباقون منه على شفا
What's left of him is on the verge of vanishing -
سلام كأنفاس النسائم سحرة
Greetings like the breaths of gentle winds in the early dawn
إن القناديل بكم
The lamps through you
صاحب سيس سره
The owner of Sisi, his secret
جزى ابن وصيف مولاه بشر
The son of the companion rewarded his master with good news,
ورد بخدك يخشى
A rose on your cheek fears
أذاه شامل وشرو
His harm is comprehensive and evil
علمت ليث الشرى وثوبا
You taught the lion evil and clothing
ساق يسوق إلى السياق محبة
A cupbearer who leads love into context
فحق لمثلي أن يقول لمثلها
It is fitting that one like me should say to one like her
لله هاتيك السياط كأنها
Those whips belong to God, as though they are
إن الدهر خان امرأ
Time betrayed a man
أقبل أطراف السهام إخالها
I kiss the tips of arrows though they've pierced
التاجر الخياط قاض عندنا
The tailor merchant is our judge
جرحت الأبرياء فأنت قاض
You have wounded the innocent, so you are a judge
ألا رب طباخ مليح تقول
Behold many a fine cook say to me,
يقبل الأرض مشوقا قائلا
He kisses the ground passionately, saying,
لقد بلينا بمالكي
We are troubled by one who flogs the Turks,
مديد الزحاف سريع الخلاف
Long zihaf, rapid difference
سحائب البرد المرفض صائلة
Clouds of spurned cold swooping
بفتح الدين شرفنا
With the opening of religion we were ennobled
معرتكم إلى مصرين تعزى
Your acquaintance with the two Egypts* is praiseworthy,
يا سائلي تصبرا
O you who ask me to be patient,
أثلوج ضاعفت الهموم وطالما
You doubled my sorrows and often
دخلت يوما داره
One day I entered his house
بعثت قطائفا روى
You sent bouquets, their fragrance perfumed
فلا تك في الدنيا مضافا وكن بها
So do not in this world be an addition
قوض إلى قوص الصعيد فبابها
Head to the hill of Qawṣ, for its door
لحمي عسا عن منصب
My flesh beyond any position
إذا لم يرد فلان الكتاب
If so-and-so won't return the book
أيا عائبي الخرساء كفوا
O you who reproach the mute one, cease, for her glance
إذا ما تعاصى من تحب لقاءه
If the one whose company you love
تركت مكاتبتي عامدا
You left off writing me intentionally
ودعتها ويدي اليمين لأدمعي
I bid her farewell, my right hand for my tears
إن للشام فراتا
The Levant has an Euphrates
قلت لفرا فرى أديمي
I said to the one who fled, my love fled
لا تكن لائمي إذا اهتز عطفي
Blame me not if my frame doth quiver
أفديك أيتها الدمن
I ransom you, O familiar abode
لي راتب لم يرض عبدي به
My pay that did not please my slave
أبائع حب القمح في وصل شادن
I sell the wheat’s love in the union of Shadan
وسمينة كانت لها
A buxom girl once held
أفدي امرأ كان على بعده
I sacrifice myself for a man who was from afar
أنا في الحب قانع باليسير
I am content in love with little,
وقائل هل لك في
A questioner asked, “My friend, have you
قالوا تعدى عليك مغتصبا
They said he transgressed against you by force
لحبيبي شامة في خده
My beloved has a mole on his cheek
مرت بخدي شقيق
A corn poppy caressed my cheek
والله لا كنت مادحا طرفا
By God, I was not one who praised excessively,
تعشقت أحوى لي إليه وسائل
I fell in love with one I have means to get to
قالوا تجدر من تهوى فطلعته
They said, "Wall yourself from whom you love." So I walled myself,
زاد في ظلم عاشقيه حبيبي
My lover has increased the injustice against me
إن لمت حظي فلا تلمني
If I am not fortunate, do not blame me,
كرهت وضوءا من قناة تساق من
I hated the ablution from a canal that flows
شاعر أخرج نصفا زغلا
A poet gave a worthless coin
قالوا بدا الشعر أما تشعر
They said poetry has begun, shouldn't you recite poetry?
إن يوم الوصال يوم قصير
The day of union is a brief day
قالت شقائق قبره
His anemones said,
كبد معذبة وقلب خافق
My liver is tortured, and my heart beats rapidly,
في حشيش قد ترقى
In the grass that grows
لي شهوتان أحب جمعهما
I have two desires I'd love to unite
في ظرف خمر خان مخدومه
In a wine cup betrayed its owner
شتان يابن فلان
How different, O son of so-and-so
يا جامع المال كيما تستريح به
O gatherer of wealth so you may rest with it
أبصروا دمعي فخافوا
They saw my tears and were afraid
غبطت مسواك حبي
I envied your toothbrush my love
كأنما الفانوس في حسنه
The lantern in its beauty is like
يا من غدا في طلاب العلم مجتهدا
O you who has become diligent in seeking knowledge
لو كان يفدى مرض
If an illness could be redeemed
يا أعدل الناس في القضايا
O fairest of mankind in your judgments,
ما للزمان عن المروءة عار
What shame has time brought upon valor!
دنيا إذا أحسنت أساءت
If the world treats you well, it treats you badly
سيدي قد بدأتني بكتاب
My master, you have started me with a book
إن فخر الدين فخ
Indeed, the pride of religion is vanity
عجبت لمن تعمد بخس حقي
I'm amazed at one who deliberately sought to diminish my rights
يا مجد قد فات العلى
O glory, the heights have passed
وما أشبه الحمام بالموت لامرئ
How like to death a man's remembrance seems
أضعت حقي لأجل ليني
You wronged me for being too kind,
لي مجموع صغير عند من
I have a small collection with someone
أسفي كيف كنت أطلب عزا
How I regret seeking honor
طيب الخمول يصدني
The fragrance of serenity deters me
إذا مضى للمرء من عمره
When a man reaches fifty years of his life
يمينا لا ذممتك طول عمري
I never blamed you in all my life
وجدي طويل عريض في محبته
My wide affection grows long and wide
العروضي فلان
Al-Uroodi is so-and-so
إذا وهبا اليوم فلسا واحدا
If today they gave away but one coin,
أصلح الله دمشقا
May God restore Damascus
ما الذي ضرك لو زرت
What would it hurt if you visited
فول بفلس غداء
A bean for his breakfast,
لم أجمع المال فخرا
I did not amass wealth out of pride
مرت نساء كالظبا خلفها
Women passed by like gazelles behind her
إذا ما زوجة الإنسان ماتت
When a man's wife passes away
قدرك يا صاحبي وقدري
Your worth, my friend, and mine
لو كنت تدري ما لقيت من الهوى
If you but knew what I have suffered from love,
لعينه الزرقاء في
For her blue eyes in
عجبت لشيء كل شيء يهابه
I am amazed by something, everything fears it
ثلاثة كن حذرا خائفا
Be wary and afraid of three,
قالوا زهدت عن الحكم
They said, "You have renounced wisdom."
فردة من لآلئ
A lone pearl
إذا أحببت نظم الشعر فاختر
If you love to compose poetry, then choose
تبسمت لي وقالت
She smiled at me and said,
وصانع للكوافي يقول
Maker of elegies, he says to the moon:
هويت حصادا حكت
I yearned for harvest, my body was shaped
جئنا إلى الباب باحتفال
We came to the door with celebration
ألثغ بالراء زار بيتي
The slanderer came to my house with evil
مشتملا بالسيف قد
Bearing his sword he came to see me,
قالوا لفلان أبدا تدقيق
They told so-and-so, "Your love is never true"
رعى الله عيشا بالمعرة لي مضى
Allah gave me a life of contentment in Ma'arra which has passed
هويتها عرجاء أمسى
I loved her though crooked her walk
زوجة مجد الدين والداها
The wife of Majd al-Din, her parents
يا شاكيا من دولة الترك مه
O you who complain of the Turks' rule, stop!
رأيت في الفقه سؤالا حسنا
I saw in jurisprudence a question fine
عجبي لإبليس ارتضى
I am amazed at Iblis, who chose
بسي من الشعر بسي
Enough of poetry, enough
جنكية شاهدت عاشقها
A jinniya I saw with her lover
قيل لي إن فلانا
They said to me that so-and-so
بهادر عبدي لا بهاء ولا در
My stubborn servant has no grace or affection
قد كنت كاتب سر خارجا معهم
You were once a secret scribe among them,
يا رب بالهادي البشير محمد
O Lord, by the guiding prophet Muhammad
أزرق عين لابس أزرقا
Blue-eyed, wearing blue
اعتزل ذكر الأغاني والغزل
Abandon the mention of songs and love poems,
دقاق قمح مليح
The grinder of choice wheat,
رغيف خبازكم قد حوى
Your baker's loaf has held
قلت له طبت يا فتى لينا
I said to him, "Good morning to you, O young man,
وبي حلاوي عنده
My beloved has such sweetness in him
ما قيم الحمام إلا فتنة
The dove is nothing but seduction
لقد عجل المحبوب نبت عذاره
The beloved hastened the growth of his reproach
بي من بنات المغل من
Among the daughters of the Magi is one
وأغيد يسألني
A small child asks me
وبي أغيد من وجهه البدر خائف
The full moon's face outshines me, though anxious
قالوا تجدر من تهوى فطلعته
They said, "Draw the veil from her whom you love." I drew it away,
لعينه الزرقاء في
In his blue eyes
لاعب شطرنج علا دسته
A chess player raised his hand,
رأيت مليحين لو أنصفا
I saw two beauties, if I judge fairly
زاد جنوني به جنونا
He increased my madness with more madness
رب أعمى أصمني عن عذولي
O Lord, blind and deafen me to my tormentors
فقيرة غنية
Poor yet wealthy,
فراقك للأجساد مفن ومتلف
Your absence kills our bodies bit by bit
قاض لنا مهما انثنى أو بدا
However he sways or appears a judge for us
لقد قالت لنا حلب مقالا
Aleppo has spoken to us words,
يا من سبى شمس الضحى
O you who has captivated the sun of dawn
ما مات من هذي صفاته
He who bore such traits ne'er died,
أمولانا شهاب الدين إني
Our master Shahab al-Din, I
متى ما عدلت إلى راجع
Whenever you turn back to one who repents,
قبلتها للتلاقي
I kissed her upon our meeting
مر بنا مقرطق
A joker passed by us,
ستروا المكرم بالحرير وستره
They covered the honored one with silk, and covered him
يعجبني وفاة من
I rejoice the death of those
والنار أيضا من جنود نبينا
And fire too among the troops of our Prophet
قد كان أعظمهم زهدا وأرفعهم
He was the most ascetic of them and the most glorious,
وعمر إسلامه بيته
His Islam built his home
قال بعض الناس إني
Some people say that I
أدينه أحسن ما رأي
I confess it is the fairest sight
غزا وصلى صائما عاكفا
He fought and prayed fasting, devout,
عجب الأنام لطول همة ماجد
The people marveled at Majid's lofty ambition
فديت أمرأ قد راقب الله ربه
I sacrificed for a man who observed Allah as his Lord,
اشفعوا يا رجال منبج فينا
Intercede, O men of Manbij, for us
قد كان كل منهما
Each of them used to hope
لقيت خبرا يا نوى
News reached me, O Nawaa
إن ملت لي الوشاة عينا عينا
If the fault-finders' eyes looked at me one by one
ورب غزالة طلعت
By the Lord of a graceful gazelle that rose
أشكو إليك سحابا
I complain to you of a cloud
ليس الفتى كل الفتى عندنا
Not every youth is equal in our eyes
بائعة كارتها خلفها
A seller whose basket behind her
تعالى الله عن جور وظلم
The Lord is far above tyranny and injustice
إذا نظر السحر العوالي بطرفه
When the enchanting morning casts its glance,
وضج الناس من بدر منير
The people buzzed about the radiant full moon
تعشقته لدن القوام مهفهفا
I loved him slender as a lance, bedding down
يا أهل مصر هكذا وليتم
O people of Egypt, thus it shall be
أرح النفس قليلا
Give the soul some rest,
أيا حاجب السلطان زانك
O brows of the Sultan, a brow adorns you,
قيمة قيل لها
A virtuous woman was told:
رأيت فقيرا في المرقعة التي
I saw a poor man in the patched robe
حكى العقيق والنقا
He told of carnelian and pearl
هكذا كن محبة واحتفالا
Be love and celebration among us
إذا نلت العلى راع الرعايا
When you attain a high rank, be a shepherd to your people,
والله ما المرد مرادي وإن
By God, my intention was never to praise them, though
إذا الحاجب المذموم عن حلب مضى
When the frowned-upon eyebrow departed Haleb
سلمت أنك ترتشي
I presented that you take bribes
أقسمت لو شاهدته
I swear if you saw him
تعجبت من نهديه لو أن لامسا
I am amazed at her breasts, if a touch
بي هيفاء من بنات العراق
With radiant beauty of Iraqi girls
وفتاة إن شدت أو أنشدت
And a girl, if she sang or recited poetry
وتركماني سمت قوامه
You left me steadfast in my love
ألا رب طباخ مليح تقول لي
Alas! Many a fine cook has said to me,
لا تحرصن على فضل ولا أدب
Do not seek excellence or refinement,
حماة مذ فارقها شيخنا
Since our sheikh left Hama
مريد القضا بالقرى
The seeker of fate in the villages
بأبي وأمي حسن عائدتي التي
By my father and mother, how beautiful is my return
يا من هم للعين قره
O you whose presence brings joy to the eye
قد شين من بالشين منطقه
The one whose speech is vile disgraces himself
شكوت إلى الطويلة طول ليلي
I complained to the tall one of the length of my night
مجلسهم مجلس بهي
Their gathering is a splendid gathering,
يا حمرة خده الشهي البرق
O rosy cheek, lightning flash of beauty,
سناك يا بن الكرام الكاتبين سبا
Your poetry, O son of honored writers, has been
دمشق قل ما شئت في حسنها
Damascus, say what you will of her beauty,
قبلتها للتلاقي
I kissed her when we met
من كان ذا ظفر فلا
Whoever has success should not feel safe
لا تعاتب على انقطاعي فودي
Do not blame me for being distant, my love for you
كاد حديد براحتيه
The iron nearly melted in his palms
لا تحملوني على انتقام
Do not force me into revenge
فستق ساء الأعادي
Almond is disliked by enemies
ناديت دملجها فديتك دملجا
I called out to her who was wrapped in darkness, I would give my life for you, oh shrouded one,
أأخشى من الأعداء والله ناصري
Should I fear the enemies when God is my helper?
قال عذولي كف عن
Al-Udhuli said "Refrain
رأيت مليحين لو أنصفا
I saw two beauties, were I to describe them justly
جائع طامع طلوع غشوم
Hungry, greedy, hopeful, cruel
أخجلتني بتواتر الإحسان
You have embarrassed me with your constant kindness
قال داري مضيئة
He said, my home is bright
قلبي بين صدغه
My heart is torn between
قد عجبنا لأمير
We are amazed at a prince
إذا تعذر حبي
If my love becomes difficult,
حمامكم في كل أوصافه
Your bathroom in all its descriptions
أيها الباخل فيما قد ملك
O miser, of what you possess
هنيت مولودا به
I congratulate a newborn with it
صانعة قلت لها أنت قد
I said to her, "You have been
صبرا لصرف زمان قاطع الحجج
Patience for the turning of a time that defies arguments
عجبت في رمضان من مغنية
I was amazed in Ramadan by a singer
إنا نبذنا بالعرا
We were cast out into the wild
زلزلة قد وقعت في العقبه
An earthquake struck in Aqabah
أيا علو دمع العين يغني عن الورد
The tear's height suffices not for the rose's stead
أرأس السبط ينقل والسبايا
The chief's head is carried, and the captives,
أراني الله وجهك كل حين
May God let me see your smiling face every moment,
أشكو إلى الرحمن لؤلؤا الذي
I complain to the Merciful of a pearl which
إني امرؤ قل بين الناس أشباهي
I am a man with few equals among people
بأيمن جرعاء الكثيب خيام
With the right company of dune travelers, tents
أشجار لوز تنادي
Almond trees call out,
ما دام في الإنسان روح
As long as the human spirit exists
يا من أفارق قلبي عند فرقتهم
O you whom when we part I feel bereft of heart,
ويلي على الشهباء ويل الشهبا
Woe to me for the gazelle, and woe to the gazelles
لله ورد سرنا
For God is a secret rose
صديقك الموصول مقطوع إلى
Your connected friend is inclined
ومالي إلا حب آل محمد
I have none but love for Muhammad's family
قال عطار مليح
A handsome perfume seller,
معذر عشت بتقبيله
Forgive me, I lived by his kiss
فقيه إذا طال هجرانه
When the learned departs, and my patience for him reaches its end
إياك من غضبي عليك فإنه
Beware my wrath upon you, for it is
لما اعتدى لولو سقوه طلا
When Lulu was wronged, they gave him to drink
ما ذكروا المصطفى بسوء
They did not mention the Chosen One with evil
فلان فظ غليظ
So-and-so is rude and coarse,
يا سيدا ألفاظه لكل
O master of words
يا شمس أشعلت شمعا
O sun, I lit a candle
يا معشر الأصحاب إني امرؤ
O companions, I am but a man
فجعت حماة ببدرها بل صدرها
Hamah was devastated by the loss of Badr,
هلكوا هم وديارهم في لحظة
They perished, and their homes in but a moment -
واغضبا من شاعر
And be angry at a poet
ضممتها عند اللقا ضمة
I embraced her when we met, an embrace
يا بنات الشرق حاذرن السطا
O daughters of the East, beware of haste,
سوداء قالت لبيضاء الأديم إذا
The black one said to the white fabric when
وبيضاء في عينها زرقة
With white in her eyes blueness
ودعتني بطرفها
She bid me farewell with a glance
قلبي لعمر الله معلول
My heart is distraught for this life with Lulu,
مرت بخدي شقيق
A chick passed by my cheek,
إن أك برا فأنا فاجر
If I become great, I will be wicked
رشفت عند اللقا من حلو ريقتها
I tasted at our meeting from her sweet saliva
تبدت لتكذيب بطلمس
The sun in the Atlas appeared
ظنوا برب العرش ما هو أهله
They assumed the Lord of the Throne was as they fancied
يا ليل مهما شئت طل
O night, no matter how long you are
إن السحائب قد طغين بجلق
The clouds have overflowed with downpour
وكنت إذا رأيت ولو عجورا
When I used to see even a cripple,
قف وقفة المتألم المتأمل
Stop and reflect like one who is suffering and contemplating
مودعتي قفي زمنا يسيرا
My farewell, stay a little while
وفي بغداد أقوام كرام
In Baghdad there are generous people,
فكأن من أهواه في حمامه
My beloved is like an idol in his bath
إن يطش بعض كلامي
If some of my words go astray,
أوصيك فإن قبلت مني
I advise you, so if you accept from me
كتابنا خطه ضعيف
Our book, its script is weak,
خل بكرا أو عجوزا
Whether young or old
عابدة النار سنا نورها
Worshipper of fire, her light years old
يا شاكيا من حزنه
O you who complain of your sorrow
من يبع ذات جمال
Whoever sells a beauty
شكا من الخط ضعفا
He complained of the line's weakness
أنا سني وحالي
I am Sunni, yet my state
كم شببت لي فتاة
How a maiden has enchanted me
يا من أحاجيه أعيت
O you whose riddles have wearied
بي من لو قال لي مبسمه
Whoever smiles at me, were to say:
أرى أناسا حرصوا
I see people who were so eager
إذا ما شئت أن تحيا
If you want to live
ديار مصر هي الدنيا وساكنها
The land of Egypt, it is the world, and its dwellers
هويت طباخا إذا
If I were blamed by one I love
يحتاج من يطلب طول البقا
Whoever seeks long life
سلطاننا اليوم طفل والأكابر في
Our sultan today is a child, and the elders are behind
أنت يا كامل الحجا
You, the perfect proof
مليحة عوراء ما
Lovely is the one with flaws
دعه ونتف العذار إذ ما
Leave him be and pluck the sweet blooms when
يا من له بين الورى رتبة
O you whose rank among men is known,
يقبل الأرض وينهي إلى
He kisses the ground and turns to
فليس نصح الفتى لصاحبه
Roses are red, violets are blue, I translated the poem, just for you.
كل يوم رتبوا أربعة
Roses are red
ترى عدوا دعا علينا
An enemy has cursed us
رب فلاح مليح
The farmer's wise Lord
حمراء ساطعة الذوائب في الدجى
Red, with a blazing tail in the gloom,
ابن النقيب قال لي
The sergeant’s son said to me
ما لي وللسعي إلى
Why should I strive for
زائرة زارت بلا موعد
A visitor came unannounced
يا تاجر الأقباع فرقك دائر
O hawker of caps, you differ from me, a perpetual circle
هويت أعرابية ريقها
Her saliva is sweet though she torments me,
كانوا إذا قبلوا الرشا
They used to, when bribed,
قالت حكى لي شخص
She said, someone told me
وبي خياطة بكر تعاني
A maiden sewing, bashful and shy
بالله إن غنيتهم فتبرقعي
In God's name, though you sang to them, my songs were lost on them.
لي بالمعرة شمس
The sun of Ma'arrat is mine
وما يدري الصدى في النحو شيئا
The echo knows nothing of grammar -
يا ليتني حاشية زركشت
Oh how I wish I were the border
تمنى القضا فاقدا شرطه
I wish fate had lost its clause,
تصوفت لما أن تصونت سيرة
When you became virtuous after you guarded your conduct,
ألا قل لسيدنا الشاعر
O say to our master the poet
من قبل أن تمسوا ونصف منهم
Before the night is halfway gone they will be
بسجعات قصار فهي تحكي
With short rhymed prose it tells
حياة البهاء كموت الشهاب
The life of glory is like the death of a shooting star
لو ان الشافعي رآك نادى
If Al-Shafi'i saw you, he would call out,
قرطها خافق وقلبي أيضا
Her earring flutters as does my heart
