1. The tear's height suffices not for the rose's stead
And my sea of passion has no limit in you

2. To delight my nightingale with you is my wish
To you my heart remains though we are apart

3. I will stay true though you may change your vow
And break the pact though I made one with you

4. You alone claimed all beauty for yourself
And I alone claimed all the sadness for me

5. When blamed by the critic I hid my tears
And feigned a patience that was not in me

6. I mask my love as much as I am able
At times I hush, repeat nor reveal my plea

7. So I show a face devoid of love's turmoil
Yet inside I suffer the loss and the need

8. I see the deprived, denied of my tears' rain
And the blood I shed, would that it met the need

9. For you I envy the proud their boasts
Yet I refrain from tales of my Lord's great deeds

10. Your lips distract me from theology
Lest I reveal the unique, matchless creed

11. With friends I guard talk of you despite my longing
And avoid loose women, cads and the like breed

12. The breeze can't carry my messages for fear
It will return with scent of perfume's bead

13. I fear for you your kin who think death as sweet as honey
For them dishonor comes as easy as deed

14. Though you are lofty, my love, radiant faced
My lot is like your disheveled hair's twist

15. However much a glance you send I implore
By God, change not the phantom you bid

16. How can a phantom visit one sleepless, frail
Who follows passion with ever passion's need

17. Ask the star of my state, it will tell my grief
My weeping and wakefulness, sorrow and loss

18. If, O Exalted One, you were to act justly
A wonder! A fair tyrant of faultless creed

19. Do not fail me, for you promised and I see
To break a promise the act of a knave indeed

20. My cares persist, though much has come to pass
Why did you hurt me so, what prompted this deed?

21. In solitude love's fancy brings your image
O Pact-Breaker, to chide and plead

22. So beauty intercedes, being intercessor
In shy respect I cannot respond to its plea

23. Coyness in the wolf is no virtue, but in the lion
It is the noble's manner, of perfect breed
