ولقد عجبت لقائل لي مرة
I was astounded by someone who once said to me
هاشمي مهبب أحمدي
A Hashimi, an affectionate Ahmadi
وقد رويتم له الأملاك ناصرة
The angels have been attributed to assisting him
بلغ الهوى بفؤادك المجهودا
Passion has exhausted your heart,
ما جرت خطرة على القلب مني
No thought crossed my heart about you
أجد بآل فاطمة البكور
The morning shed its tears for Fatima's family
لم يزل بالقضيب يعلو ثنايا

أتتنا تزف على بغلة
She came to us carried on a camel
ألا أيها اللاحي عليا دع الخنا
O you who blames Ali, leave off your slander
جعلت آل الرسول لي سببا
I have made the Prophet's family a cause through which
ألا طرقتنا هند والركب هجع
Behold, Hind came to us when the caravan rested
لأم عمرو باللوى مربع
For Umm 'Amr there is, in the sands, a square enclosure
جاءت مع الأشقين في هودج
She came with the unfortunates in a howdah
لا فرض إلا فرض عقد الولا
No duty but the duty of loyalty
لذلك ما اختاره ربه
So what his Lord chose
فطوبى لمن أمسى لآل محمد
Blessed is he who spent the evening a follower of the Family of Muhammad
وفي ذات السلاسل من سليم
In that same group of chains from Sulaym,
إني امرؤ من حمير أسرتي
I am a man from the clan of Hashim
قل للإمام الذي ينجي بطاعته
Tell the Imam who saves through obedience to him
قد ضيع الله ما جمعت من أدب
God has wasted what refinement I brought forth
قولا لسوار أبي شملة
Say to Sawwar ibn Abi Shamla
أتيت دعي بني العنبر
I came when called by the sons of musk
وفي يوم بدر حين بارز شيبة
On the day of Badr, when the aged Shaybah
وصاحب الحوض يسقي من ألم به
Roaming by the basin, the one pained
أشهد بالله وآلائه والمرء
I bear witness by Allah and His signs
هل عند من أحببت تنويل
Is there someone you loved that you intend
فمن لم يكن يعرف إمام زمانه
So whoever does not know the Imam of his time
في قصة الطائر المشوي حين دعا
In the story of the roasted bird when Muhammad
يا ابن أمي فدتك نفسي ومالي
O son of my mother, for whom I would sacrifice my soul and possessions
قل لابن عباس سمي محمد
Tell Ibn Abbas, name Muhammad's
وجاء عن ابن عبد الله أنا
And it was reported from Ibn Abd Allah that
أقول لأهلِ العمى الحائرينا
I say to the blind and wandering people
أتى جبرئيل والنبي بضحوة
Gabriel came, and the Prophet at dawn
شفيت من نعثل في نحت أثلته
Your lips were carved from the juice of dates,
هذا الإمام الذي إليه
This imam to whom
أمرر على جدث الحسين
I pass by Hussein's tomb
من كان في الدين نورا يستضاء به
Whoever was a light in religion to be illuminated by
يا بائع الدين بدنياه
O seller of religion for worldly gain
أؤمل في حبه شربة
I hope for a drink from his basin,
علي عليه ردت الشمس مرة
The sun once turned back for him
بان الشباب ورق عظمي وانحنى
Youth has withered my bones and bent
وليلة كاد المشركون محمدا
That night the polytheists nearly killed Muhammad,
أتيناك يا قرم أهل العراق
We came to you, O Qaram, people of Iraq
لمن طلل كالوشم لم يتكلم
For him whose marks are like tattoos that do not speak,
أفي رسم دار إذ وقفت به قفر
When you paused before a home in ruins
لعمرك ما من مسجد بعد مسجد
By your life, no mosque after a mosque
دونكموها يا بني هاشم
Record it, O sons of Hashim
بعث النبي فما تلبث بعده
The Prophet was sent, and after him
إلا الحمد لله حمدا كثيرا
Nothing but abundant praise is for Allah
نبئت أن أبانا كان عن أنس
I was told that a man called Aban
أيا راكبا نحو المدينة جسرة
O rider towards the city briskly
وفاطم قد أوصت بأن لا يصليا
Fatima has instructed that they shall not pray
إن كنت من شيعة الهادي أبي حسن
If you are truly of the Shi'a of Abu Hasan al-Hadi
وارث السيف والعمامة والراية
The heir of the sword, the turban, and the lofty banner
كذب الزاعمون أن عليا
The claimants have lied that Ali
محمد خير بني غالب
Muhammad is the best of the sons of Ghâlib
لأقدم أمته الأولين
To the earliest community of his people
تركت ابن خولة لا عن قلى
I left Ibn Khawla not out of boredom
ونعمتي الكبرى على الخلق من غدا
My greatest blessing upon creation from tomorrow
لحانا الناس فيك وفندونا
The people have abandoned us and betrayed us
إني لأكره أن أطيل بمجلس
I despise sitting long in an assembly
إمام الهدى قل لي متى أنت آيب
O Imam of Guidance, tell me when will you come
عجبت لكر صروف الزمان
I wondered at the turns of fickle Time
أقسم بالله وآلائه
I swear by Allah and His signs
وأهوج لاحى في علي وعابه
He raged against the eminent, blaming him
وصدق ما قال النبي محمد
And he believed what the Prophet Muhammad said
ذاك قيم النار من قيله
That is the value of fire from its kindling
وأديت عنه كل عهد وذمة
You paid off every pledge and obligation from him
وصفت لك الحوض يا ابن الحصين
I described the pond to you, O son of Al-Hussein
لما أتى بالخبر الأنبل
When he brought the news in the noble bird
واختل من طلحة المزهو جبته
The robe of Talhah, embroidered and adorned,
وعصبة فتشت عني وعن حسبي
A league has inquired into my lineage, out of envy,
ألم يك لما دعاه الرسول
When the Messenger called him, did he not respond?
فما إلى أدناهم منه بيعا
He went to the poorest of them to trade
قام النبي يوم خم خاطبا
The Prophet stood up one day at Khumm
وحدثنا عن حارث الأعور الذي
Tell us about Harith al-A'war, whom
وقام محمد بغدير خم
Muhammad stood at Ghadir Khumm
وهو الذي يسم الوجوه بميسم
He is the one who marks the faces with his brand
كان المسيم ولم يكن إلا لمن
He who treads the path with care
الفجر فجر الصبح والعشر عشر
The dawn, dawn of morn and the tenth, tenth of dawn,
كان الوصي وكانت ابنة أحمد
The guardian was, and Ahmed's daughter was,
قال بنيا النبي وابناه والبرة
The Prophet said my two sons and the Righteousness
شرفت بك الأرض البسيطة بعدما
The vast earth was ennobled by you after
ألا يا أيها الجدل المعني
O you who persists in futile argument!
وإن عليا قال في الصيد قبل أن
Before revelation descended in the Qur'an about hunting,
أنت ابن عمي الذي قد كان بعد أبي
You are my cousin who came after my father
سبطان أمهما الزهراء منجبة
The two grandsons, their mother is Al-Zahra', the eminent,
خف يا محمد فالق الأصباح
Tread softly, O Muhammad, for dawn has arrived,
فإن قلتم أبونا عبد شمس
If you say our father is Abd al-Shams
لشربة من سويق عند مسغبة
A drink of broth at evening
يا شعب رضوى إن فيك لطيبا
O people of Ridwa, indeed among you is a pure one
أيها المادح العباد ليعطى
O you who praise men to gain reward
ألم يسمعوا يوم الغدير مقاله
Did they not hear on the day of Ghadir his saying,
يا عجبا لابن عطاء روى
How strange the son of 'Ata' narrates
يتلون أخلاق النبي وفعله
They emulate the Prophet's morals and deeds
أشهد بالله وآلائه
I bear witness by Allah and His signs
وصلى ولم يشرك سنين وأشهرا
He prayed and did not associate others for years and months
وقد أتانا رداء من هديتكم
A cloak has come to us from your gifts
أمسى بعزة هذا القلب محزونا
With sorrow my heart's dignity has become burdened
ظننا أنه المهدي حقا
We thought he was the Mahdi, truly
وقوله الميزان بالقسط وما
And his saying, the scale is with justice, and nothing
يا صاحبي تروحا وذراني
O my friend, please go and leave me be
هب علي بالملام والعذل
Blame me and rebuke me,
إن الإله الذي لا شيء يشبهه
The God who nothing resembles Him
وإذا حضرن مع الملاح بمجلس
When they come with sailors to a gathering
علي أمير المؤمنين وعزهم
Ali is the Commander of the Faithful, their pride
أعلماني أي برهان جلي
Show me any clear proof
فقام يسعى حتى استقى فملا
So he went to draw water and filled
صبوت إلى سليمى والرباب
I drank to the health of Sulaima and struck the lute,
برئت إلى الإله من ابن أروى
I am innocent before God of Ibn Arwa
خوارج فارقوه بنهروان
The dissenters parted with him at Nahrawan
بيت الرسالة والنبوة والذين
The house of prophethood, messengership, and faith
أعارك يوم بعناه رباح
One day a wind lent you his nose
من كان أول من تصدق راكعا
Who was the first to donate while bowing in prayer one day his ring and was an advisor
قد أطلتم في العذل والتنقيد
You have prolonged the blame and criticism
هلا وقفت على الأجراع من بتن
Have you stopped at the traces of encampment from date palms,
واسأل بني الحسحاس تخبر أنه
And ask the tribe of Has-Has, you will be told that
بأبي أنت وأمي
By my father and mother,
بت ليلى مسهدا
At night Laila's abode I visited
شهيدي الله يا صدي
My martyr of Allah, O truthful one,
قف بالديار وحيهن ديارا
Stop at the ruins and whisper to them,
ادخل إلى أحب الخلق كلهم
Enter the abode of the most beloved of all creations
قيم النار ذاك لها وذا لي
The fire's worth is for it, and this is for me
ألم يصل علي قبلهم حججا
Did not Ali pray before them all
من فضله أنه قد كان أول من
For his virtue, he was the first one who
وبيعة ظاهرٍ بايعتموها
You pledged allegiance, outwardly,
يا آل ياسين يا ثقاتي
O Ahl al-Bayt, O my trusted friends
منحت الهوى المحض مني الوصيا
I gave unalloyed love to him as a trustee
طاف من هند خيال فذعر
A phantom from India roamed by
على آل الرسول وأقربيه
Peace be upon the Prophet's family and kin
ما أتعب الإنسان في مسعاته
Nothing tires man in his quest
وكان له أخا وأمين غيب
He had a brother and trustworthy confidant
من ليلة بات موعوكا أبو حسن
Abu Hassan spent a night in great pain
يا من غدا حاملا جثمان سوار
O you who tomorrow will carry the corpse
طاف الخيال علينا منك هنادا
Imagination came to us from you here brisk and gentle,
وصي النبي المصطفى وابن عمه
The Prophet's cousin, executor and kin,
يا أهل كوفان إني وامق لكم
O people of Kufa, I am a faithful friend to you
أقول لما رأيت الناس قد ذهبوا
I say, when I saw people going astray
سائل قريشا بها إن كنت ذا عمه
Ask the Quraysh, if you are unknowing,
ولكنه أصفى عليا وجعفرا
Yet he purified Ali and Ja'far
وصي رسول الله والأول الذي
The prophet's successor, and the first who turned
لست أنساه حين أيقن بالموت
I do not forget him when death was certain
وكفاه بأن طوبى له في
It is enough for him that bliss is his in
يا لقومي للنبي المصطفى
O my people, for the Chosen Prophet
توفي النبي عليه السلام
The Prophet passed away in peace
بعث الإله إلى ثمود صالحا
God sent Salih to Thamud
وقال طوبى أيكة ظلها
Blessed is the sheltering tree,
ما بال مجرى دمعك الساجم
What ails the flowing stream of your falling tears?
فقال له قد كان عيسى بن مريم
Jesus son of Mary, as you claim
وإن مسيري من ذراك ضرورة
My journey from you is out of necessity
قف بنا يا صاح واربع
Stop, O night companion, and move away with your gloomy songs,
لعلوة زار الزائر المتأوب
To Alewah came the repentant visitor,
أحب الذي قد مات من أهل وده
I love the one who when death comes to his loved ones
لا در در المرادي الذي سفكت
No wound inflicted has bled as the hand
أتعرف رسما بالسويين قد دثر
Do you know a drawing made by the righteous
قف بالديار وحيها يا مربع
Stop by the abodes and its inspiration, O square one,
وعلي أول الناس اهتدى
Ali was the first of people to be guided
سأحكم إذ حكمتني غير مسرف
I will rule justly when you appoint me, not wastefully
شهدت وما شهدت بغير حق
I bear witness, and I bear witness with the truth
جاثيت سوارا أبا شملة
I knelt before the just and righteous Imam
صح قولي بالإمامة
My words affirm the Imamate
ملك ابن هند وابن أروى قبله
The son of Hind's king and the son of Arwa before him
قائل للنبي إني غريب
A stranger said to the Prophet, "I am a stranger,
ولما رأيت الناس في الدين قد غووا
When I saw people going astray in religion,
سماه جبار السما
أبو حسن غلام من قريش
أيا شعب رضوى ما لمن بك لا يرى
هلا وقفت على المكان المعشب
إن امرأ خصمه أبو حسن
ولدته في حرم الإله وأمنه
وإذا الرجال توسلوا بوسيلة
صب الإله على عبيد حية
سمي نبينا لم يبق منهم
من كان معتذرا من شتمه عمرا
وأول مؤمن صلى وزكى
نادى علي فوافى فوق منبره
هو مولاك فاستطار ونادى
وكنت الخليفة دون الأنام
فإنك كنت تعبده غلاما
قوم نبالهم ليست بطائشة
إذا أنا لم أحفظ وصاة محمد
أليس علي كان أول مؤمن
أين الجهاد وأين فضل قرابة
أوليس قد فرضت علينا طاعة
إذا قال الأمير أبو بجير
أشاقتك المنازل بعد هند
وإسماعيل يبرز من فلان
اهبط إلى الأرض فخذ جلمدا
يا صاحبي لدمنتين عفاهما
علي إمام وصي النبي
أليس عجيبا أن آل محمد
فتى أخواه المصطفى خير مرسل
لقد سمعوا مقالته بخم
تباشر أهل تدمر إذ أتاهم
في حرام من الشهور أحلت
رجل حوى إرث النبي محمد
إن جبريل أتى ليلا إلى
من ناكثين وقاسيطن الأروع
نفسي فداء رسول الله يوم أتى
وإنك آية للناس بعدي
كانت ملائكة الرحمن دائبة
كمن ف يخف الوصي حية
همة تنطح الثريا وعز
هم الأئمة بعد المصطفى وهم
أترى صهاكا وابنها وابن ابنها
قد قال أحمد إن شتم وصيه
وصي محمد وأمين غيب
أقول يا ليت ليلى في يدي حنق
به وصى النبي غداة خم
امدح أبا عبد الإله
أشهد بالله وآلائه
يا عاذلي في الهوى وعاذلتي
ما أم يوم الوغى زحفا برايته
فدع ذا وقل في بني هاشم
ألا أن الوصية دون شك
ولم ترضعك مريم أم عيسى
لعن الله والدي جميعا
وإن لساني مقول لا يخونني
شجاك الحي إذ بانوا
علي وأبو ذر
علي أمير المؤمنين أخو الهدى
واذكر تحمله الديار ولا تكن
