1. Before revelation descended in the Qur'an about hunting,
Ali had judged it best, as was right and orderly.

2. For the killer of forbidden game, his judgment
was a substitute offering brought to God's house dutifully.

3. When he deliberately hunted, to make amends, no more transgressing,
Gabriel, Michael, and Israfil by night came auspiciously,

4. Surrounding him in splendor, drawing water he arrived finding,
each with a thousand angels thronging in his company.

5. Three thousand angels greeted him, so he welcomed them in, gracious and benign.
A thousand slaves from his household he freed for God's sake sublime.

6. Walking two by darkness one night silently pacing,
roaming in the night's thick clothes obscurely interfacing,

7. To an idol the Khuza'a tribe all revered piously,
to break it down and make away - acting courageously.

8. "Mount my back, O Ali" he said. He carried him willingly,
the best of men, destroying the vain idol utterly.

9. "May my Lord reward you well for this deed done thankfully."
