هل أنجزت لك وعد الوصل أسمآء

تجنبت والمشتاق لن يتجنبا
I've avoided while the ardent cannot avoid
أرق المحبين الذي منع الكرى
The most wakeful lover is he who blamed the one
أجارتنا أن الصدود من الغدو
The pre-dawn travelling has cautioned us that separation is more painful than parting.
تمتع من شرخ الصبا ما تمتعا
Enjoy the pleasures of youth while you can
أرقت للبرق بات يأتلق
I was sleepless as lightning began to flash
سقى الغيث ريا منازل ريا
The rain watered the homes, pouring down
بانت سعاد وغنى ركبها الحادي
The camp of Sa'ada has set forth singing,
أسعد بيمن وإقبال أبا عمر
I congratulate Abu Omar in good fortune and prosperity,
لا اللهو شاب ولا عهد الصبا درسا
Youth has not faded, nor youthfulness passed away,
ألمم بيعرب تبصر سيد العرب
The leader of the Arabs you see
منازل الحي من ميثا بتكريت
The abodes of the living, from Maythab to Tikrit,
لمن الظعائن طلع الأحداج
For whom have the gazelles raised their longing eyes?
لم يدر إذ نام الخلي من الشجي
When the lonely one slept, he did not know
رأت وخط شيب وهو في الرأس لائح
She saw a lock of gray hair showing clearly
ألا من لصب قريح الفؤاد
Oh who has a heart burning with passion
إلا مسعد بالهوى من سعاد
None is happy in love but he who attains union after separation
أمانعنا من دون إلف نزوره
Our acquaintance unaccustomed to visit us
أصاب القذى عين الرقيب الموكل
The guard's eye was stricken as the slanderer's mouth gaped
أمن بعد جد الشيب أعبث بالهزل
I jest in my grey old age, bereft of insight and reason!
ألا كل ليل لم تنمه طويل
Oh! Every long night when I could not sleep
أمط عنك نعت الحمى والطلل
Cast off the cloak of anxiety and ruin
عجبا لأحبتنا رحلوا
How strange that our loved ones left,
أعلى السماحة جري كل يماني
The highest generosity flows through every generous one
إلى وجدك النامي من العدم الشكوى
To your growing existence from nothingness is my complaint
عرجا بين رسوم المغاني
Wander between the drawings of songs
بنفسي مكحول الجفون رماني
With heavy eyelids I've been made drunk,
طيف ألم به وهننا فحياه
A specter touched him gently, so I greeted him
خليلي بعد الشيب هل يحسن الهزل
My beloved, after gray hair, is jest seemly?
أُعير نفسي حرصها واجتهادها
I blame my soul for its greed and effort,
لا تعذلاني إن بكيت رسوما
Do not blame me if I weep over visions,
من اختار نقص المال أورثه الفضلا
Who chose to lack wealth, nobility endowed him,
أجدك ما يصحو الفؤاد المعذب
I find you whenever my tortured heart awakens
خطرت ببالك ليتها لم تخطر
The thought crossed your mind, if only it had not
رعى الله ذهلا حيث أمت ركائبه
God shepherded Dhuhl when his riders headed
هو الصب يبكي والمتيم يأرق
The youth cries and the lover stays awake,
بدا وجهك الميمون في أفق المجد
Your auspicious face dawned on the horizon of glory
طال عهد الصب فادكرا
Long has been the time of patience, so let us remember,
أبا اسحاق ياخير الورى
Aba Ishaq, O best of creation
سمج الزمان وأوحش البلد
The times have become bleak and the country desolate
صدي دلالا فإني عنك مصدود
Turn back, my guide, for I'm barred from you,
شيب العذار بماذا عنك اعتذر
How shall I excuse my hoary locks to the censurers?
سقيا لعهد الصبا باللذة انصرما
The days of youth with pleasure have passed,
إذا ذكرت يوما مكارم تستبقى
When virtues are remembered, praise endures,
غدا كلأ اللذات وهو يبيس
Tomorrow, the sweet days of joy will wither,
ايامنا وليالي لهونا عودي
Our days and nights of pleasure have returned
يا مزنة الصيف من در الحيا صوبي
O summer fragrance from the pearls of life, turn towards me
يا مجلس واللذات والطرب
O gathering of pleasures and joy,
ماذا ألم بلمتي فأشابها
What ails my heart that it has grayed,
ألبارق متألق الأيماض
O lightning, brilliant flashes
نظرت إليك بطرف أكحل أدعج
She looked at you with a kohl-lined eyelid
آن لي آن لي مقام الصلاح
Now I have attained the abode of righteousness,
صحت العواذل والمتيم ما صحا
The lovelorn have woken though love caused them no waking,
ألم تر ان الشوق لج فبرحها
Did you not see that longing has overwhelmed me
الجود يحكم في ارتياحك والغيث
Generosity rules your comfort
يا دار جيرتنا والحي حييت
O home of our neighbor and lively quarter, I bid you farewell,
من كان يحمد عنده أن يحمدا
Whoever is praised when praiseworthy
هي النفس من ذكر الممات نفورها
The soul naturally recoils from thoughts of death,
هكذا الحر إذا الحر افتقر
Thus the free man, when in need,
ألا ليت أهل الأرض في الحزن والسهل
Alas! If only the people of the earth were in sorrow and the plain
لمن الديار كأنها الوشم
To whom do the abodes belong, as if they are tattoo marks?
ألا حي بالأجرعين الطلولا
Alas! The days of youth and pleasures pure,
أمد خر المعروف أعزز به ذخرا
Extend the good you do, augment it as a treasure
تزينت الدنيا وصار ابتهاجها
The world has adorned itself and its joy
يهنيك في حسب أبا اسحاق
You are praised for your noble pedigree, Abū Ishāq,
يا حبذا متعة الدنيا وملعبها
Oh, how delightful are the joys of this life and its play,
أَفدنا من بني عمر فقلنا
We sought aid from the sons of ‘Umar, so we said:
حلي الملوك وتيجانها
The crowns of kings and their diadems,
سنا وجه ذهل سنا البدر ذاكي
The face of Duhl is radiant, like the shining full moon
أكل مهذب طلق اليدين
Every refined person with generous hands
سبحان الباريء للنسم
Glory be to the Originator of breath
كبرت والبيض واللذات من أربي
I grew older, my hair turned white, and pleasures left me,
أعندك من فرط الصبابة ما عندي
Do you have from excessive passion what I have
شحط الحبيب فما يطاق مزاره
My beloved's absence is unbearable, his dwelling is far
وفد البريد بما يريد فبشرا
The postman came with what he wanted, so he gave good tidings,
ذكر المتيم للأحبة مألفا
The lovesick Tameem recalled his loved ones
آب الظلام بأذكار وتشويق
The darkness cried with invocations and excitements
يا للطلول ويالها من أربع
O you tall statuesque beauty
ألا زعم الواشون أنك عاشق
Alas, the slanderers claim you are a lover,
يا لقلبي من شدة الأشواق
O my heart, how intense is your longing,
لا تنكرن الصبا والدمع والأرقا
Do not deny youth, tears, and sleeplessness,
وفيت لمن لم يلف حبا فما وفى
I kept faith with those whose love was not reciprocated, yet they did not keep faith.
عرج على رسم الطلل
He passed by the ruins of encampments
ألا كل من عز بالظلم ذلا
Behold, all who are mighty through injustice will be abased,
إن الملوك إذا دعت لسباقها
When kings called for a race
أحسن كعادتك الحسنى أبا حسن
Do as is your excellent custom, Abu Hasan
إذا شئت إنجاز الجوائز بالنجح
If you wish to achieve rewards through success,
يا صورة راق حسن منظرها
O image of pleasing beauty,
منك النوال ومني الشكر والطمع
From you comes bounty, from me gratitude and longing
زمان الصبا حييت هل أنت عائد
The days of youth you greeted, will you return?
أمن الغيور وكف عنا العاذل
The jealous one has given up on blaming us,
هات أسقني الراح في راووقها عللا
Bring me a drink in her jug, and make me drunk
لعا لك مما أحدثته خطوب
Alas for what afflictions you have caused, O fate!
أعير نفسي حرصها واجتهادها
I blame myself for its greed and effort,
هجر الحسان وهن من آرابه
رحل الخليط وأنت غابر
زمن الصبا وملاعب الخلطاء
تحيرت في تقليب أمرك يا قلب
من أدب النفس ضل مذهبها
ألا زعموا اني مللت وملت
ليت الصدور وفيما بيننا صدد
عبيت بظبي الخدر كيف أصيده
ما بال أسد الشرى تصيدها
هل للأحبة دائما عهد
لي لكبد الحرذى وقلبك بارد
لعا لكم وانتعاشا يا أبا عمرا
أرقت وطال الليل واعتادني خبلي
لولا المشيب لما استجبت لعاذل
إن المتيم حين شاب قذاله
يا دمن الحي عليك السلام
أفي كل دار زرت لي قلب هائم
أضاع لدي الوجد ما حفظ الصبر
لك الطائر الميمون بالسعد طائر
أبصرت أن لا عند غيرك مطلب
ولا وصمة بكريم معدم نشبا
أليلي أم ليل السليم المسهد
هو المسلك المألوف يغشى ويقصد
أبا حسن إن السيادة والمجدا
بذهل على كل فضل شهاده
شكوت صدود البيض والرأس أسود
فديناك من وجه عن الحج صادرِ
عمرت عامر مجد يا أبل عمر
إنما ينفعنا صوب المطر
برقت عوارضها فخلت وميضا
الجود يحكم في ارتياحك
طلب الندى من أهله سهل
لابد من وقفة للأنيق الذلل
قصرن الخطا وهززن الغصونا
هو الصب بتيه
