1. We sought aid from the sons of ‘Umar, so we said:
Perhaps poetry has benefited wherever it went.

2. The Banū Nabhān were generous to us until
We deemed every Azdī magnanimous.

3. A people adorned themselves with claiming to be Azdī,
Yet when asked, I found them inanimate.

4. We asked Aḥmad al-Qaṣabī for a little,
Yet the miserly one showed neither generosity nor repetition.

5. So ascribe miserliness in Yemen or else
Ascribe the man's lineage to corruption.
