1. The lovesick Tameem recalled his loved ones
And shed tears enough to water their covenant

2. The rolling sea of youth cried
With sorrow for it, and rightly it should grieve

3. How good was our life and how sweet
If only time aided misfortunes to balance

4. Days we play with coveted bliss
And delight our eyes with chosen companions

5. And wear the hems of the banner and graze
In it a springtime for union and summer

6. And visit from the herd of gazelles and zeal
Pasturing lush, bending graceful and curled

7. Where eyelids are sickly, in the weakness of their glance
Appearing frail and squinting

8. Smiling radiantly and alluring
Coy, wandering flirtatiously and wriggling

9. Cheap are passions so if he gestures with his palm
He bestows a fingertip dyed with henna and adorned

10. His thin clothing is cool as if his plaits
Are the purest drink, too good to be sipped

11. With it he shakes artistry, as if youth’s hand
Embroidered with exquisite beauty, pleated

12. And carries cloth rolled at his waist
Nearly showing a faint waist inside

13. And his leg shows through his thin garment
Drenched in musk between his antlers and bent

14. My friend, how can I recall a lover
When the beloved’s covenant is blameworthy and defiant

15. Crying with the water of his eyelids
Always overflowing, twinkling and blinking

16. And he saw the colour of grey hairs but was not deterred
He wept until it marred his sight but was not sated

17. And it pains me that the gazelles now shun me
After I was accustomed to their affection and kindness

18. For in the pleasures of youth and innocence
The beloved rewards when he is petulant or aloof

19. And whenever I wished, I would rouse him from drunkenness
Melodious with the intoxication of flirtation

20. So I sipped from his lips pure wine
Competing with me for a sip, gurgling

21. Until the hands of estrangement cast us
Far from the abode of loved ones, flung

22. Time has cast upon my meadows
Affliction, and left them vacant and barren

23. So I strung pearls of meaning into a necklace
And wove from the rhymes of poetry an ornament

24. And sailed the tumultuous sea on its course
And cut through the unruly huge waves

25. And accompanied my hopes and tasked the path
Shabby, arduous in times of distress, gritty

26. Until I visit Abul Mugheera seeking
His forgiveness, bravery, and loyalty

27. I mean Muhammed bin Qahtan whom
The world favored, and his courtyard is the goal

28. He inherited greatness and his fathers built
A home atop the honorable summit

29. He whose traits are all beautiful
And his manners shine too brightly to be described

30. Abul Mugheera has habitual blessings
The planets orbiting never alternate

31. Open handed with wealth giving generously
When some men merely feign to give

32. Seeking good praise, he sees it
As recompense for what he brought and spent

33. Witty, his thoughts generate wisdom
More subtle than air, and gentler

34. Eloquent, judicious, a skilled orator
Fluent of tongue like a sharpened sword

35. His opinion assails with intelligence, unfettered
And he brandishes a branch with glory, cultured

36. And when wars broke out among his peers
He met the evildoers defiantly and heroically

37. By pilgrims heading to the Holy Ka’ba, they set out
Seeking between the two hills of Marwa and Safa

38. And "Labbaik", their scent to Mina
Winding, chanting the talbiyah and devoted

39. Abul Mugheera lost a sun who always
Was the dearest and noblest among the Qahtan

40. You have become, o son of glories, peerless
Still leading the paths of greatness

41. And to you, I crafted this ode in Arabic
Adorning it with eloquent literary pearls
