1. When the lonely one slept, he did not know
Of the burning embers of passion still aglow,

2. Nor of the sighs and tears that would not flow
For one in deep slumber beyond all woe.

3. The lovelorn remains ever anguished so,
Pining between kin bidding farewell as they go.

4. Successive terrors assail with sounds of woe-
The nomads' shouts and foxes' cries of joy.

5. Still he yearns for a pretty one in her abode
And hankers after a gazelle in her penfold,

6. Recalling the charms of days now old
When slim waists he would tightly hold.

7. With a necklace and belt was she dressed and trimmed,
Bangled, ankleted, braced, and gemmed.

8. When she walked her smooth forearm showed
And a rosy cheek the veil's border glowed.

9. Languidly she glanced with sleepy eyes
And smiling revealed teeth spread and wide.

10. Coyly her hair she turned aside,
Recalling days when hunted was the deer-eyed.

11. Swaying she paced sure and steady tread,
Even and proud like a sword held straight ahead.

12. To him the spring days were pleasant times
When fresh hues tinged his fair handsome.

13. Spring has spread its robes on the meadow
With flowers strewn all over.

14. Lilies and pansies and hyacinth blue,
And narcissi and daisies not few.

15. In profusion nature's charms renew
With pearls and rubies and sapphires too.

16. The morning breeze on him gently blew,
Entreating softly in murmurs subdued.

17. O’er his wine the youths each other outdo
Whether mixed or still fresh in its crude.

18. The charms of maidens are now renewed
But for their chaste poise they would obtrude.

19. Pour your passion, heart, ere it delude,
And learn patience that lovers conclude.

20. For I have endured all the pain of love
From one well versed in women's every move.

21. Some fault our verse if we thereof speak
Be it of love or generous deeds we seek.

22. But say to them, “Nay! For us is our way
And in speech we are free, unfettered and frank.”

23. Be not hasty to judge all too quick
Lest, without excuse, it be sin you commit.

24. Consider well if some escape he permit,
Ere you protest or your wrath emit.

25. What says he of me and my praise outpoured
For Abu Abdallah, most noble lord,

26. Whose generosity has amply scored,
All comforts to aid men afforded?

27. To Mohammed's path I try to afford
And hope from his mercy to win some reward.

28. From Abu Abdallah too a bit afford,
Mohammed son of Abu the noble and lord.

29. And I watch God's gifts overflowing outpoured
To suppliants, misfortunes hereby ignored.

30. When his forehead bowed all darkness was gored
And his luminous face outshone as the sword.

31. Of Azd's spring are they, stars that soared
To the highest heaven's towers toward.

32. Their faces as bright as the cutting sword
That glitters with stripes on the sharpened edge scored.

33. They overcome tribulations untoward,
And they break through gates that are barred.

34. When darkness descends calamities towered,
Their light guides the course we steered.

35. To them flee the refugees oft overpowered,
And the outcasts by fate's whims toured.

36. Mounted on steeds that fears never cowered
They appear like dark clouds that towered,

37. Rising above the summit tower red.
With arched neck on proudly held head

38. And hoofs firm on ground and gait steady tread
And flanks smooth as silk and back arrow-sped.

39. Repelling all foes with swords blood-dyed red
Girding their loins with hilts star-studded.

40. When the horsemen recount Azd's great deeds spread
Exalting their feats so oft said

41. They confirm Mohammad Ma’amar’s high place
As our hope's apex and succor when tide adverse face.

42. High you reached past the stars beyond place
Or alongside oceans bounds safely pace!

43. Let Azd’s helpers fill you with pride and grace
Aus or Khazraj of esteemed race

44. Who speak well and walk with poised grace,
Blessings attend them in every case!
