1. Alas for what afflictions you have caused, O fate!
And for the calamities of time when they befall.

2. Your enviers were not gladdened by your downfall,
Nor did misfortune gain a portion of you.

3. What would please the gloaters about a chief
Who has noble ancestors as surety?

4. He was struck by that which does not detract his glory,
For such are the blows fate's trials inflict.

5. He has the merit of resilience in adversities,
And the habit of rising above the blows of fate.

6. An eye overlooking specks in matters,
And a chest spacious for the secrets of worries.

7. He is but a glorious one, judicious,
Full of experience in testing matters, rational.

8. He protects the glory of Atiq1, and is wary
Of the honorable Alzaidi2 lineage, and it is formidable.

9. What can the envious say but to express
That he is sorrowful?

10. Yes, like one who tended the Arabs' affairs was aggressive
And whose heart roamed in chests and was amiable.

11. It is no wonder that he grieves morning and eve for one who passed,
At the abode of every cultivated person, there is ringing and weeping.

12. If sorrow has perturbed him, it is as though
It is new, and if he shows patience, it is wondrous.

13. He knows that Allah will reward him
For his patience, requiting the youth.

14. O Clan of Umar3, you all lived, and were exonerated
Of wrongdoing, your bodies and hearts pure.

15. Still, a cloud was passing by he who travels
To those you buried in the bare land.
