1. Thus the free man, when in need,
Bears fortune or complains of fate,

2. And draws good from its origin,
Asking relief from triumph’s face.

3. He left rest to toil on the plain
With Sa’d’s generosity, not Mu’dhir’s greed,

4. And my lord motivates him, making
Him like rain that pours or sea that swells,

5. A chief who shakes with might and bounty
As the angry, valiant sword shakes clear.

6. By God’s will the Exalted, and my father’s—
The best of men—’Ali son of ‘Umar.
