1. Now I have attained the abode of righteousness,
My heart cries out from the bliss of love.

2. My wish is for guidance and wisdom,
My avoidance of youthful folly and abandon.

3. My realization is to abandon misguidance with resolve,
My liberation from my shackles and freedom.

4. After wand’ring long in passionate love,
My risings with the youths and my repose.

5. And my following of frivolous pleasures,
And my submission to melodious singers.

6. When I would not fear the words of a critic
In disgrace, nor the blame of a blamer.

7. In the path of love, felled by arrows,
Wounded, not by solid piercing tips.

8. Amid a flock of desires that entice me,
The magic of their languid glances, pure sickness.

9. And the gardens coming to the repentant,
My seizing of their wine, and my morning draught.

10. And my spending the perfect night in slumber,
Every beauty like a startled gazelle.

11. From slim waists, smooth embrace,
Radiant like the white of an ostrich egg.

12. She sways the bough of a ban tree bending
Amid the tents, plains, and meadows.

13. The burst of a white lightning flash,
And the sipping of dew amid the thickets.

14. The scent of pink roses wafted
Gently from her, and plucking of apples.

15. After complaining of a youth and reproach,
And apologies full of jest.

16. And gray appears in the blackness of my temples,
So I folded my veil and restrained my zeal.

17. Nothing left but youth and denial,
And yearning for love and comfort.

18. When lightning flashes and the night grows dark,
And the morning breeze blows at dawn.

19. And when the doves coo merrily,
My heart flutters like the fluttering of a wing.

20. So I sang in wonderful rhyme,
With refined meter and praise.

21. By my life, my verse took flight by the words
Of one whose like has no wing to fly.

22. From my qualities the finest, my father al-Hasan the Sayyid,
He dazzles the dew and the Lord of clemency.

23. The generous one accustomed to giving hands,
The beneficial restorer to the desolate.

24. Sayyid dressed in beauty, imbued
With love in hearts and spirits.

25. In gatherings he shines a face
Like a glowing lamp.

26. And if the destitute visit him, he shows them
A cheerful, promising face.

27. And the destitute gather in the midst of his household
In a vast space of beauty.

28. And when he associates with kings, he grows
In the noble, gentle, honorable station.

29. And he has with kings an inviolable honor
Guarded without prohibited money.

30. The righteous, revered leaders smell of glory,
And the brave protectors of realms.

31. With the free-running steeds they race forward
Like untethered horses amid spear shafts.

32. Raiding parties in each attack,
Between reddish brown and white hillocks.

33. Of men stingy with their possessions
But when given, not miserly.

34. They are like downpours in time of giving
And like lions in time of struggle.

35. They are those who feed others each lean year
Whose crops have withered and borne no grain.

36. They descended as guests out of generosity
And made their homes wide with shelters.

37. Verily I found the people of merit to be a people
Whose truth spoke openly.

38. The people knew his superiority and sublimity
And acknowledged his praise in agreement.

39. He who gives thanks in prosperity,
And shows goodly patience to destined decree.

40. Prosperity upon all kings altogether
By his superiority and diffusing praise!

41. And to him belongs success above them
Where overflowing cups are passed.

42. And when the destitute come, his bounty
Suffices them with a name well-pleased.

43. And when calamities darken he dispels them
With perception like a shining lamp.

44. Qualities of one well-mannered yet forceful
To the unruly, gracious and open.

45. You have lived, O Duhl, O Abu Hasan, for as long
As living was good, in wealth and success.

46. And I see you pleased, all your children
Enjoying bliss and joys.

47. And may bliss repeat each year for you
The best of its habits and gifts.

48. And to you the finest jewels and pearls,
So seize them, most precious of profits!
