1. Do not deny youth, tears, and sleeplessness,
And know the three cures for one who loves,

2. What does one afflicted by illness conceal,
When the body's strength to be patient for me has diminished,

3. And how can he restrain his flowing tears,
When the eye throbs as the morning breeze stirs gently,

4. So leave me as desire passes by to blame him,
With tears when you have ceased to compete with him,

5. Indeed I lamented while the living eye laments,
And I met the morn of separation with horror,

6. Umayra showed coldness to our visit,
After she had accustomed us to love's bonds,

7. By the memories of you I am seldom distracted,
From me and the phantom of your imagination stole softly,

8. She revealed her full moon in its appointed place,
And shook the bough of ebony above the slender twig,

9. And she came swaying in her appointed place,
Like the sun when it is clothed in the red sky,

10. She struts in the meadow of lavender arrogantly,
Brushing the hyssop that bends to shake off leaves,

11. You would think her a black partridge when she yawns
From behind the tresses covering a white skin,

12. I would wander at night in the madness of love,
Sometimes roaming through the horses of passion quickly,

13. Accompanying my drinking partner who grants me
At dawn a share of the wine and more,

14. What pleasures I shared with him and he with me
Drinking in the early dawn when the cockcrow pierces,

15. In a garden and pond whenever the morning breeze
Stirred upon it as the winds gently sigh,

16. With lads and maidens when they are sated
You will not find between them any stinginess or spite,

17. We continued to console ourselves with bliss
While baseness diminished between us,

18. With coffee that adorns the mixture whenever it whitens
It produces for gold pearl pieces that split,

19. As if carnelian in our cups was melted
And the musk on its rims was crushed,

20. Then I was diverted while the amusement for me
Had I been left to myself, would not have lasted,

21. Youth is gone and this grey hair has clothed me
After vigor, with the garb of creation,

22. And time separated my loved ones and replaced them
For me with enemies and the sting of estrangement,

23. O time, you have changed the states of joy but have not
Changed for me any excellent trait or nature,

24. And you have shown me, vexed by the enmity of foes
Distressed, and by cups of woe boiling,

25. Were it not for some verses of poetry in which I find
Comfort from the agony of care that melts my mind,

26. The outpouring must show itself, and whoever
Can bear complaining will find it speak,

27. When I determined to exceed in praise, I became
Perplexed, and poetry came to me unbidden,

28. The two noble masters, who in every
Eternal glory have reached such distinction,

29. Who were endowed by sublime traits as though they
Were created from the essence of perfections,

30. They shone with a brilliance befitting them
And radiated with a light that fills the horizon,

31. Crowned with the crown of highness and loftiness,
Girded with the girdle of chastity and piety,

32. With ambition they donned determination,
With firmness they wore eloquence,

33. Kings everywhere were awed by their superiority, and they
Surpassed the limits and reached the utmost heights,

34. Each of them was a sea swirling with dew for us,
And a rain cloud pouring life-giving showers,

35. The Ata’iq clan and sons of kings, for them
In the earth is the light of honorable pride that dazzles creation,

36. Whoever has not drawn near to their towering summits,
Has surely erred and intended ignorance and rending,

37. O envier of them, smoldering with enmity,
And incapable against them in exertion, boil with rage!

38. O my masters, take the sincerity of advice
From myself, and do not accept from others insincerity,

39. And here it is, strung like a rosary whose decoration
Is the embedded pearl arranged properly,

40. And the scent of the excellent musk in my praise
Of you will always perfume whatever opposes you,
