1. When virtues are remembered, praise endures,
For the praise of poetry is worthless chatter.

2. No poem is like that which I recite,
Except the best poem contains sustenance.

3. The truest praises the best of his people,
And most generously acts and is most noble.

4. My father Abu Hassan Al-Azdi Zahel approves and blesses,
The noblest of the Azd, Zahel, and he is truly their master.

5. The chief of the Bani Nabhan, most generous,
Kings over people of the world, their slaves obeying them.

6. O Bani Umar through God's kindness,
To each at your hands He gave ample sustenance.

7. You ruled all people when you made
Their delicate necks free of the yoke of need.

8. None gained wealth except through Bani Umar
And none found paths but those leading to Samad.

9. O Abu Hassan, o Zahel you who has
Beauties that filled east and west.

10. You who surpassed kings in sovereignty
And excelled them in merit and outpaced them.

11. You ascended easily to the highest rank,
Where none but you can climb.

12. Your noble company alone averts harm,
And the radiance of your face revives the living.

13. You remain to guard honours and possess them,
For honours endure only through endurance.

14. And may your descendants live, o Zahel, a life
Free of hardship or misery.
