مهفهف حسنه بديع
His beauty astounding, exquisite,
غير مستنكر من الأيام
The days have brought no strange surprises—
نعم هذه حزوى وتلك زرود
Is this Hazwa or Zarud?
سرى طيفها وهنا إلي فحياني
Her apparition passed gently, bringing me delight
قاتلي في هواه من غير ذنب
He kills me with his love though I've done no wrong
رمنا الفخار فنلنا منه ما شينا
We fired pottery, thus gaining what we desired
إفزع إلى الباري وكن
Run to God, be afraid
شباب غير مذموم تولى
A blameless youth has passed away
أيها المقتر شحا لا تخف
O you who are stingy, do not fear poverty
دار الحياة غرور
The house of life is an illusion
أيها المختال كبرا
O you who are arrogantly imposing
وإن التلقي بالقبول على الذي
And indeed receiving with acceptance from the one
يا دار سلمى بسفح ذي سلم
O abode of Salma in the foothills of Salam
قالوا امتدح سيد الكونين قلت لهم
They said praise the Master of the two worlds, I said to them
ملكتم فؤادا ليس يدخله العذل
You own a heart not penetrated by blame,
الآن باح بمضمر الأسرار
Now my secret feelings overflow
لو كان يعلم أنها الأحداق

كيف يرضيك على الضيم المقام
How can you be content with disgrace as your abode
أغيرك يرجى لخطب نزل
Is there anyone else hoped for in times of distress,
كن كما شئت إن حبك فني
Be as you wish, your love is my art
حتام أكتم ما الدموع تبيح
I conceal what tears reveal
ملكتموا فاعدلوا في الصب أو جوروا
You have ruled, so be just in passion or unjust
وأغيد وسنان اللحاظ قوامه
His slender figure sways like a supple branch
أي سيف نضته لي جفناكا
What sword did your eyelids unsheathe for me
يكفيك يا ذات اللمى يكفيك
Enough, O bearer of blames, enough
صدقت الصبر أجمل يا فلان
You speak true, patience is most fair, my friend

يا فاضلا قد جاءنا
O virtuous one who has come to us

وغيداء لا تنفك تمل عيونها
Her eyes never stop searching people
يبكي عليكم محب ذاب من أسف
A loving mourner weeps for you, melting with sorrow
وما ضرني أن لا ترون فضائلي
It does me no harm that you cannot see my virtues.
صرفت عن الكيميا همتي
I diverted my determination from chemistry
أخفض للخل من جناحي
I lower my wings for vinegar made from wine
يا بني المختار من مضر
O sons of Mudar, chosen ones,
فراقكم هاج اشتياقي وأشجاني
Your separation stirred my yearning and sorrows
وقد أطلت ما ترى
I have prolonged, as you see,
وبديع الحسن ألمى

يا من تبدل بي بديلا في الهوى
O you who replaced me with another in love
سلاما ألذ من السلسبيل
Greetings sweeter than honeyed drink
أيها المغضب جهلا

عجب الناس عندما حجبوا
People were astonished when they concealed
آل النبي هم أتباع ملته من

فدونك منه سفر لا يسامى

يقولون زيد لم تركت مديحه

ما كان ظني فيك مولاي أن
My lord, I never thought that you
سقى العقيق فالديار فاللوى
He watered the sand dunes, then the dwellings, then the winding paths
سلام على من لم يحل بمهجتي
Greetings to the one whose love resides solely in my heart,
يا طلعة القمر المنير
O rising moon so bright
ومعذبي من لا أبوح بذكره
And those who torture me, I do not reveal their mention
أو أنه كان يرضي الموت فيك فدى
As if it pleased death to take you
يا من بطول التجافي
O you who with long estrangement
دعا فؤادي يقاسي الشوق والكمدا
My heart endured longing and yearning in love
كم ذا يذوب أسى وكم يتجلد
How much grief melts away, and how much endures
لم استطع نحوكم خروجا
I could not go out to meet you
أمولاي قد ضمنا مجلس
My wish, we have gathered in a gathering
أتزعمني لديك أجل خل
You claim I have no end to my worries
ومثقل يكفيك منه أنه
And burdened is enough for you that it
الموت حق فاستعد
Death is certain so prepare
مولاي صبرا للقضا

أحسود قل ما شئت في
I am envied, say what you will of me

وكم خلي يلوم جهلا

نقضت بعد النوى عهدي وميثاقي
You broke your promise and covenant with me after intimacy
نقضت عهودي فاسترحت من الهوى

ما لي وللافتقار في بلدي

I am still preserving my honor from the thorns of life
إليك ضياء الدين واصل سيره
To you the light of faith its course addressed
من علم اللفظ سحر الناظر الساجي
He who knew the magic of words to enchant the beholder,
وبابلي لحاظ
A Babylonian garment
من راحمي من ثقيل بارد نظري
My friend, your pain I understand
ملكت يا مالكي قيادي
You have taken possession of me, my possessor,
أتسرقني وأنت أجل خل
You steal me while you're the most precious companion
عزمت باليمن تحمي حوزة اليمن
You resolved with auspiciousness to protect the territory of Yemen
يا من غدا بين الأنام
O you who have become, among all people
مشروطة خطرت ترنح قامة
A beauty swayed, her supple form complained of her burden.
ألحاظه كالسهام فعلا

يا طلعة البدر وقد القضيب
O rising full moon, with straightened spear,
يا واهب الجرد السلاهب
O Giver of the fleeting mirage
يا بن خير الأنام دعوة عبد
O son of the best of mankind, the call of a servant
يا شفا نفسي ويا برء
O my soul's cure, o my heart's relief
يا بن خير الورى ومن
O son of the best of creation, who
هم أودعوه الذي أودعوا
They entrusted him with what they entrusted,
دعهم يقولوا فبي فوق الذي قالوا

رام عذالي فيه سلوة
The slanderers have sought in him a consolation
عادت عليك بما ترجو وتأمله
The rewards of kindness, benevolence and generosity
مولاي قد فقت الورى
My Master, you have surpassed all people
سالكا من فنونه كل شعب
Exploring every art in its branches,
أهل المدايع كلكم
O people of deceit, all of you
ودائي من قبيلي براني
My love for my people has afflicted me
الناصبي جاحد
The slanderer is an obstinate denier
ومثقل وافي مقام جماعة
And burdened, fulfilling the abode of a group
شوقي إلى الغيث قد تمادى
My longing for rain has grown intense,
ركبنا مطايا الشوق سعيا إليكم
We mounted the steeds of longing, seeking you,
أسسوا لكل كفور
They laid the foundations for every ungrateful one
من ترى غير علي
Who do you see other than Ali
وفاتر الطرف ليس يرعى
With languid eyes that take no heed
يا معشر النصاب لا نلتم غدا
O you deceivers, you will not get tomorrow
كنانة عز فوقت للعدى نصلا
Kanana demonstrated valor, triumphing over enemies with her sword
يا كعبة الحسن التي
O Kaaba of beauty to which
أترى صحا وأفاق من سكر الجوى
Does dawn wake and sober from the intoxication of passion?
لا تقف بعد عزم شهر الصيام
Do not stand after the resolve of the fasting month,
عيناي فيك بأسياف البكى اجترحا
My eyes shed tears of sorrow for you
واسوء حالي في غد
My worst state will be tomorrow
يا أديبا لا يداني شأوه
O scholar unmatched in eminence
أنا غيظ كل مناصب
I am the anger of every slanderer,
هات عن أهل الحمى ما فعلوا
Ask the people of passion what they did
حدثاني عن علي حدثاني
Tell me about Ali, tell me of him
يا طرف أنجد بالدموع
O eyes that shed tears in Anjad,
وإن ترد أن ترى فؤادي
If you wish to see my heart
فيم الجفا وعلام الصد والملل

دمنا بأكناف العقيق خوالي
With the valleys of al-‘Uqayq as neighbors
أضعت العمر في إصلاح حالك
You wasted your life trying to improve your state,

With love of the Prophet and love of the Virgin
رويدك من كسب الذنوب فأنت لا
Take it slowly with sinful deeds, for you cannot endure the hellfire's flame nor withstand it.

O you who initiated my injustice, you will find
مقيم في اقترابي وابتعادي
You reside in my coming and going
أذكر الوعد مولانا ومالكنا
I remind the promise of our Master and Owner
يمينا بكم ما حلت عن صدق ودكم
My right hand I'll not withhold from your friendship true,
هات بالله هل أتى في سواه
By God, say: Has anyone like Him come along?
وا طول حزني في غد وتحسري
Alas my long sorrow tomorrow and my regret,
قاضي القضاة وعالم العلما الذي
The judge of judges, the scholar of scholars
غالطتني بقولها
She deceived me with her words
يا قمرا حل عقد صبري
O moon that untied the knot of my patience
عذب اللمى كم أهيم فيه
How sweet is sleep, how I yearn for it
قالوا نراك طويت عن ذكر الصبا
They said, "We see you have forgotten the memory of youth,
كيف لا أبدي شجوني وأنوح
How can I not express my sorrows and lament
ترفق بجسم قد أضر به الهوى
Be gentle with a body that passion has wasted away,
مدحي لكم يا آل طه مذهبي
My praise of you, O family of Taha, is my creed,
يا قبر أحمد كم حويت
Oh Ahmad's grave, how much you've contained
معاذي إن عاذ اللهيف ولاذا
My refuge, if God has granted refuge, and sanctuary,
أنا السيف لا تختشى نبوتي

تفضل لا برحت قرير عين

أغير أبي السبط للمصطفى

إن الكتابة شأنها
Writing has its own place,
خذوا بيدي في الحشر يا آل أحمد

يا أيها القاضي الذي

لك القلم الأعلى الذي إن سللته
Yours is the loftiest pen, which, were you but to unsheathe it,
أتعزي في المصاب

عجبت من الفعلاء إذ حديت بها

مجيئك يا صدر الأفاضل نعمة
Your arrival, O noble one, is a blessing
الآن حين انتهى السلوان والجلد
Now when solace and patience have ended
لم لا وقد وشت مطارفها
Why not, when its edges are adorned
عزاؤكم آل المطهر في فتى
Your solace, O purified family, for a young man

يا حبذا يومي بحده

Has it not come time to quit your delusions
مديحك القول يشفي السامعين له
Your praise heals those who hear it,
وأسود ليس يندى منه كف
A hand uncalloused will not darken
وما زال منكم حيث حل ركابنا
Wherever our path leads, one of you arises
برح الشوق فواصل
Longing flared up, so visit me
لحيدرة الفضل دون الورى
Haydar deserves merit above all people,
وسلوا دارهم أين استقر فريقها

You blame me more, had you found me obedient,
وبي معذر خد ورد وجنته
My excuse is a rosy cheek and a garden of roses
ما بعد الموت قل وجد
عذرا فقد حارت العقول
أيغنيك دمع أنت في الربع ساكبه
قالوا إلام تحب آل محمد
لكسب العلى فاجعل همومك تحمد
ملك به عز الشريعة مظهر
عيد ثغور الأماني فيه تبتسم
أمولاي قد أهدى أسير ودادكم
لولا ضني جسدي والمدمع الجاري
يهنا المعالي قدوم منك ميمون

طول فشوقي باعه أطول
