1. Your separation stirred my yearning and sorrows
And tempted my eyelids with sleeplessness and sorrows

2. And revealed my illness in you I had concealed
And expressed my state openly in my youth about my affair

3. Alas! That which I have of love cannot be hidden
And the secret of my passion after you is like my declaration

4. O beloveds! How long, to when
Will I remember in absence those who forgot me?

5. Won’t you show kindness in union, to a lover
Prisoner of passion, restless, burning?

6. By the sanctity of love and affection between us
And the pact of brotherhood, release your captive in distress

7. I have taken you above all people as beloveds
And disobeyed in you all who kept blaming me

8. So how did you hear what my enviers rumored
And said falsely about me, slandering me?

9. By God, I never intended to change from you
And the idea to forget you never crossed my heart

10. To forget and change from you
Are two matters in the religion of passion, reprehensible

11. You promised me loyalty in love
So where are my pacts, you see, and my faith?

12. I had a friend at farewell
Whose eyes flowed with tears, wetting my eyes

13. I was burdened with one whose beauty was unmatched
So nothing made me forget him ever again

14. He who hasn't tasted my cup of infatuation blamed me
And didn't spend the night with a heart like mine, tormented

15. May God pardon whoever blamed me, if he but saw
What I was burdened with the day of loyalty, he would pardon me

16. A gazelle whose form God has shaped
From delicate blossoms in the image of a man

17. Who walks with a soft grace that makes the branch envy its pliancy
And smiles with teeth like pearls and coral

18. On his cheek is rose so freshly plucked
But the sword of a glance harvests the gatherer

19. I want to meet him but fear his watcher
So I take his side when he faces me

20. His love came to me after I had left passion
So remember me before life makes me forget people

21. To God I complain of two oppressors who conspired against me
And were the source of my worries and sorrows

22. A passion whose hardship I can no longer withstand
And a time that keeps me far from Al-Haadi ibn Ahmad

23. The young man of glory and nobility, the one
Whose superiority both far and near unanimously acknowledged

24. A young man whom knowledge willingly surrendered
The keys to its submission and compliance

25. A young man who extended the hand of generosity
So none differed on the merit of his benevolence

26. A young man who inherited from the best of chieftains
Sublime dreams, splendid steeds

27. A young man who excelled the youth of his kind before maturity
And built the highest edifice for the glory of his people

28. A brother of Al-Najda if called for valor and sacrifice
Then no coward will face him, nor will he waver

29. He harvested the stalks of precedence as a child and adolescent
And attained the heights in his youth and as a youth

30. Indeed, Al-Haadi ibn Ahmad has gathered in existence
Diverse merits that no human has assembled

31. Eloquence unmatched as the buds of flowers opened
Morals vibrant as the branches of trees shook

32. Generosity smooth as the cups of wine
Poetry delightful as the necklaces of maidens

33. My verses proceeding whom knowledge
Agrees with Labid and Hassaan’s compositions

34. Relay to him a yearning from me, however little
That threatens to erupt from the abode of Thabeer and Thahlaan

35. I come with a heart empty of your patience
And rise with a chest full of my passions

36. Is there a kindness in nearness from you, for one thirsty
For the blossoms of those features?

37. Bestow the reply quickly, for I have
For you, the longing of an ardent lover, sublime in rank

38. Greetings of a passionate lover, whose passion and love
Are for their plains, not for truffles and anemones

39. Don’t blame that my letters were delayed
It wasn’t out of boredom from me or disdain

40. Arrows of harm for the enviers pierce me
And lengthy worries haven’t ceased to cloak me

41. They continue to plot against me, O son of nobles, and long
Have they accustomed me to good morals before

42. So many a confrontation between me and the turns of fate
Make the days of gloom and Dhubyan seem trivial

43. My profession in literature is enough of an affliction
That has caused the decrease and impairment of my worth

44. If it weren’t for its tyranny against me except
That it cast me with the arrow of distance from you, deafening me
