1. As if it pleased death to take you
So we would have ransomed you with family and children

2. But death is not appeased with paying ransom
Nor does it heed pleading or redemption

3. It feels no pity for the weak and fallen
Nor fears the might of the valiant knight

4. It storms the palaces of kings, kings of earth
And drags the cub from the lioness's den

5. For the poor whose livers you eased
With drinks of sorrow boiling over

6. For the widows who weep your blood
For the hardship after you they shoulder

7. How many hearts bewildered, inflamed with grief
How many tears spilling on the cheek continuously

8. No wonder we grieve for you were
The best of all we've lost, by my life

9. As for your calamity—by God, no ear has heard
Nor has it dwelled in a thought or heart

10. A calamity that shattered the edifice of glory
And rent the arms of the eminent and sturdy

11. Profound is the affliction, so people cannot say
"Patience brings happiness"—obey the One, the Absolute

12. For patience is a precious gem beyond price
Sustained only by the Lord, the helper

13. Yet grief is no small thing, my Master, though you
Command goodly patience and composure

14. But your noble ways we know
You spurn sorrow that comes upon you

15. Unlike others we exhort to patience
You it is who guides to the right path

16. How many tribulations you faced
With fine patience, forbearance, fortitude!

17. Are you not one of lofty, fragrant chiefs
Who revived with rain of bounty every valley?

18. You are the paragon of the highest
Among the wasteland's creatures until the end of time

19. The first in generosity, lions in combat bowed
Never has the giver of gifts and shelter known want

20. Strange! You surpassed the loftiest heights of glory
And set right all crookedness and scheming

21. Thank your Master for granting you well-being
While you continued to wear its robes anew

22. As long as you lived, the crack was mended
For the faith you were like the soul to the body
