- أبو حسن غلام من قريشAbu Hasan was a youth of Quraysh,
- أتتنا تزف على بغلةShe came to us in bridal procession on a she-mule,
- أترى صهاكا وابنها وابن ابنهاDo you suppose Ṣahāk, her son, and her son's son,
- أتعرف رسما بالسويين قد دثرDo you recognize a dwelling's trace at al-Suwayyayn, now worn away?
- أتى جبرئيل والنبي بضحوةGabriel came, and the Prophet at dawn
- أتيت دعي بني العنبرI came when called by the sons of musk,
- أتيناك يا قرم أهل العراقWe have come to you, O chief of the people of Iraq,
- أجد بآل فاطمة البكورDeparture at dawn has hastened Fatimah's family away;
- أحب الذي قد مات من أهل ودهI love the one who, when someone devoted to him dies,
- ادخل إلى أحب الخلق كلهمBring in to me the most beloved of all creation,
- إذا أنا لم أحفظ وصاة محمدEnglish translation unavailable
- إذا قال الأمير أبو بجيرWhen the emir Abu Bujayr,
- أشاقتك المنازل بعد هندHave the dwellings stirred your longing after Hind,
- أشهد بالله وآلائهI bear witness by God and His blessings,

- أشهد بالله وآلائه والمرءI bear witness by God and His bounties,
- أعارك يوم بعناه رباحRabah lent you, on the day we sold him,
- أعلماني أي برهان جليTell me, you two: what clear proof
- أفي رسم دار إذ وقفت به قفرWas it at the desolate traces of an abode, when you stood there,
- أقسم بالله وآلائهI swear by Allah and His signs
- أقول لأهلِ العمى الحائريناI say to the blind and wandering people
- أقول لما رأيت الناس قد ذهبواI say, when I saw the people had gone
- أقول يا ليت ليلى في يدي حنقI say: would that Layla were in the hands of one enraged
- إلا الحمد لله حمدا كثيراOnly praise be to God—abundant praise,
- ألا أن الوصية دون شكKnow that the bequest, beyond all doubt,
- ألا أيها اللاحي عليا دع الخناListen, O you who reproach Ali: give up foul speech.
- ألا طرقتنا هند والركب هجعBehold, Hind visited us by night while the caravan slept,
- ألا يا أيها الجدل المعنيListen, you contentious man who brings distress
- الفجر فجر الصبح والعشر عشرThe dawn is the dawn of morning, and the ten are ten
- ألم يسمعوا يوم الغدير مقالهDid they not hear his declaration on the day of Ghadir,
- ألم يصل علي قبلهم حججاDid not Ali pray for years before them,
- ألم يك لما دعاه الرسولDid he not, when the Messenger called him,
- أليس عجيبا أن آل محمدIs it not strange that, of Muhammad's family,
- أليس علي كان أول مؤمنWas Ali not the first believer,
- إمام الهدى قل لي متى أنت آيبO Imam of guidance, tell me: when will you return?
- امدح أبا عبد الإلهPraise Abu Abd al-Ila—
- أمرر على جدث الحسينPass by the grave of Ḥusayn,
- أمسى بعزة هذا القلب محزوناBy evening, this heart had grown sorrowful over Azza,
- إن الإله الذي لا شيء يشبههIndeed, God, whom nothing resembles,
- إن امرأ خصمه أبو حسنIndeed, a man whose adversary is Abu Hasan—
- إن جبريل أتى ليلا إلىIndeed, Gabriel came to me by night,
- إن كنت من شيعة الهادي أبي حسنIf you are among the followers of the guide, Abu Hasan,
- أنت ابن عمي الذي قد كان بعد أبيYou are the son of my uncle, who was, after my father,
- إني امرؤ من حمير أسرتيI am a man from the clan of Hashim
- إني لأكره أن أطيل بمجلسI truly dislike lingering at a gathering
- اهبط إلى الأرض فخذ جلمداDescend to the earth, then take a rock;
- أوليس قد فرضت علينا طاعةHas obedience not already been enjoined upon us
- أؤمل في حبه شربةI hope, through love of him, for a draught
- أيا راكبا نحو المدينة جسرةO rider of a sturdy she-camel toward Medina,
- أيا شعب رضوى ما لمن بك لا يرىO ravine of Radwa, why is the one within you unseen?
- أين الجهاد وأين فضل قرابةWhere is striving in battle, and where the merit of kinship,
- أيها المادح العباد ليعطىO you who praise people to receive gifts,
- بأبي أنت وأميMay my father and mother be your ransom,
- بان الشباب ورق عظمي وانحنىYouth has departed, my bone has grown frail, and bent
- بت ليلى مسهداI spent my night sleepless,
- برئت إلى الإله من ابن أروىBefore God, I have renounced the son of Arwā,
- بعث الإله إلى ثمود صالحاGod sent Salih to Thamud,
- بعث النبي فما تلبث بعدهThe Prophet was sent, and thereafter he did not delay
- بلغ الهوى بفؤادك المجهوداLove has driven your heart to utter exhaustion,
- به وصى النبي غداة خمConcerning him, on the morn at Khumm, the Prophet charged
- بيت الرسالة والنبوة والذينThe house of the Message and Prophethood, and those
- تباشر أهل تدمر إذ أتاهمThe people of Tadmor rejoiced when there came to them
- تركت ابن خولة لا عن قلىI left Ibn Khawla not out of boredom
- توفي النبي عليه السلامThe Prophet passed away—peace be upon him.
- جاءت مع الأشقين في هودجShe came with the two wretches in a howdah,
- جاثيت سوارا أبا شملةI sat knee to knee with Sawwār, Abū Shamla,
- جعلت آل الرسول لي سبباI have made the Messenger’s family a means for myself;
- خف يا محمد فالق الأصباحO Muhammad, fear the Cleaver of dawns,
- خوارج فارقوه بنهروانKharijites parted from him at Nahrawan,
- دونكموها يا بني هاشمTake it, O sons of Hashim!
- ذاك قيم النار من قيلهThat is the keeper of the Fire, whose words are:
- رجل حوى إرث النبي محمدA man who possessed the inheritance of the Prophet Muhammad,
- سأحكم إذ حكمتني غير مسرفI shall give my ruling, since you made me arbiter, without extravagance
- سائل قريشا بها إن كنت ذا عمهAsk Quraysh about it, if you are bewildered:
- سبطان أمهما الزهراء منجبةTwo grandsons: their mother, al-Zahra, is a bearer of noble offspring.
- سماه جبار السماThe Almighty of heaven named him
- سمي نبينا لم يبق منهمOur Prophet's namesake—none of them remained
- شجاك الحي إذ بانواThe tribe filled you with sorrow when they departed,
- شرفت بك الأرض البسيطة بعدماThe outspread earth gained honor through you after
- شفيت من نعثل في نحت أثلتهYou have sated your wrath against Naʿthal by hewing at his tamarisk;
- شهدت وما شهدت بغير حقI have borne witness, and not without truth,
- شهيدي الله يا صديGod is my witness, O truthful one,
- صب الإله على عبيد حيةMay God send down upon ʿUbayd a serpent
- صبوت إلى سليمى والربابI yearned for Sulayma and al-Rabab.
- صح قولي بالإمامةMy declaration concerning the Imamate proved sound,
- طاف الخيال علينا منك هناداYour phantom visited us, Hannād,
- طاف من هند خيال فذعرA phantom of Hind passed by and startled me,
- ظننا أنه المهدي حقاWe thought that he was truly the Mahdi.
- عجبت لكر صروف الزمانI marveled at time's recurring vicissitudes,
- على آل الرسول وأقربيهUpon the Messenger's family and his closest kin,
- علي إمام وصي النبيAli is an imam, the Prophet's appointed successor.
- علي أمير المؤمنين أخو الهدىAli is Commander of the Faithful, brother of guidance,
- علي أمير المؤمنين وعزهمAli is Commander of the Faithful and their glory,
- علي عليه ردت الشمس مرةFor Ali, the sun was once brought back,
- علي وأبو ذرAli and Abu Dharr,
- فإن قلتم أبونا عبد شمسSo if you say, “Our father is ʿAbd Shams,”
- فإنك كنت تعبده غلاماFor you used to worship Him as a boy,
- فتى أخواه المصطفى خير مرسلA youth whose two brothers are the Chosen One, the best of messengers,
- فدع ذا وقل في بني هاشمSo leave that, and speak of the sons of Hashim,
- فطوبى لمن أمسى لآل محمدBlessed is he who spent the evening a follower of the Family of Muhammad
- فقال له قد كان عيسى بن مريمSo he said to him, “Jesus, son of Mary, indeed used to
- فقام يسعى حتى استقى فملاThen he rose and hastened until he drew water and filled
- فما إلى أدناهم منه بيعاSo he [turned] to the seller among them nearest to him,
- فمن لم يكن يعرف إمام زمانهSo whoever did not know the Imam of his time
- في حرام من الشهور أحلتIn a sacred month was profaned
- في قصة الطائر المشوي حين دعاIn the story of the roasted bird when Muhammad
- قال بنيا النبي وابناه والبرةHe said: [while] the Prophet, his two sons, and the virtuous
- قام النبي يوم خم خاطباThe Prophet stood on the day of Khumm, addressing the people,
- قائل للنبي إني غريبSomeone said to the Prophet, “I am a stranger,
- قد أطلتم في العذل والتنقيدYou have gone on at length with reproach and criticism
- قد ضيع الله ما جمعت من أدبGod has indeed wasted the learning I have gathered,
- قد قال أحمد إن شتم وصيهAhmad has said: insulting his appointed successor
- قف بالديار وحيها يا مربعStop by the abodes and its inspiration, O square one,
- قف بالديار وحيهن دياراHalt by the dwellings and greet them as dwellings;
- قف بنا يا صاح واربعStop with us, friend, and linger
- قل لابن عباس سمي محمدTell Ibn Abbas, name Muhammad's
- قل للإمام الذي ينجي بطاعتهTell the Imam who saves through obedience to him
- قولا لسوار أبي شملةSay, you two, to Sawwar, Abu Shamla:
- قوم نبالهم ليست بطائشةA people whose arrows never fly astray—
- قيم النار ذاك لها وذا ليThe keeper of the Fire: “That one is hers, and this one mine;
- كان المسيم ولم يكن إلا لمنHe was the shepherd, and only for those
- كان الوصي وكانت ابنة أحمدThe appointed successor and Ahmad's daughter were
- كانت ملائكة الرحمن دائبةThe angels of the All-Merciful were ever tireless,
- كذب الزاعمون أن علياThey have lied, those who claim that Ali
- كمن ف يخف الوصي حيةA snake lay hidden in the Legatee’s boot;
- لا در در المرادي الذي سفكتMay the Muradi's bounty never flow—he who spilled
- لا فرض إلا فرض عقد الولاThere is no obligation but the obligation of pledging allegiance,
- لأقدم أمته الأولينThe foremost among the first of his community
- لأم عمرو باللوى مربعUmm 'Amr has a spring dwelling at al-Liwa,
- لحانا الناس فيك وفندوناPeople reproached us over you and called us foolish.
- لذلك ما اختاره ربهSo what his Lord chose
- لست أنساه حين أيقن بالموتI do not forget him when he became certain of death;
- لشربة من سويق عند مسغبةSurely a drink of sawiq in a time of hunger,
- لعلوة زار الزائر المتأوبʿAlwa's returning night-visitor paid a visit,
- لعمرك ما من مسجد بعد مسجدBy your life, no mosque—apart from the mosque
- لعن الله والدي جميعاMay God curse both my parents,
- لقد سمعوا مقالته بخمThey surely heard his pronouncement at Khumm,
- لم يزل بالقضيب يعلو ثناياEnglish translation available
- لما أتى بالخبر الأنبلWhen he brought the noblest report
- لمن طلل كالوشم لم يتكلمWhose deserted dwelling, like a tattoo, remains silent?
- ما أتعب الإنسان في مسعاتهHow weary man is in his striving—
- ما أم يوم الوغى زحفا برايتهNever did he lead a charge beneath his banner on battle-day
- ما بال مجرى دمعك الساجمWhat ails the flow of your streaming tears?
- ما جرت خطرة على القلب منيNever has a fleeting thought crossed this heart of mine
- محمد خير بني غالبMuhammad is the best of the sons of Ghalib,
- ملك ابن هند وابن أروى قبلهThe son of Hind ruled, and the son of Arwa before him,
- من فضله أنه قد كان أول منAmong his merits is that he was indeed the first to
- من كان أول من تصدق راكعاWho was the first to give alms while bowing,
- من كان في الدين نورا يستضاء بهHe who was a light in the faith, by which illumination was sought,
- من كان معتذرا من شتمه عمراWhoever may apologize for insulting Amr,
- من ليلة بات موعوكا أبو حسنOne night, Abu Hasan lay fever-stricken,
- من ناكثين وقاسيطن الأروعAmong oath-breakers and unjust men, the splendid one,
- منحت الهوى المحض مني الوصياI bestowed my pure love upon the appointed successor.
- نادى علي فوافى فوق منبرهAli called out, then took his place atop his pulpit,
- نبئت أن أبانا كان عن أنسI was told that Aban, on Anas's authority,
- نفسي فداء رسول الله يوم أتىMay my soul be a ransom for God's Messenger, on the day there came
- هاشمي مهبب أحمديA Hashimite, spirited, of Ahmad,
- هب علي بالملام والعذلHe assailed me with blame and reproach,
- هذا الإمام الذي إليهThis imam to whom
- هل عند من أحببت تنويلIs there any favor to be had from the one you love,
- هلا وقفت على الأجراع من بتنWhy did you not stop at the sandy flats of Batan?
- هلا وقفت على المكان المعشبEnglish translation unavailable
- هم الأئمة بعد المصطفى وهمThey are the Imams after the Chosen One, and they
- همة تنطح الثريا وعزAn ambition that butts the Pleiades, and a resolve
- هو مولاك فاستطار ونادى“He is your master.” Then he grew frantic and called
- واختل من طلحة المزهو جبتهAnd vainglorious Talha’s robe was pierced
- وأديت عنه كل عهد وذمةAnd you fulfilled on his behalf every pledge and obligation,
- وإذا الرجال توسلوا بوسيلةAnd when men seek nearness through a means,
- وإذا حضرن مع الملاح بمجلسAnd when they are present with the beautiful women at a gathering,
- واذكر تحمله الديار ولا تكنAnd remember how he bore the dwellings, and do not be
- وارث السيف والعمامة والرايةHeir to the sword, the turban, and the banner,
- واسأل بني الحسحاس تخبر أنهAnd ask the sons of al-Ḥasḥās: you will be told that he
- وإسماعيل يبرز من فلانAnd Isma‘il comes forth from so-and-so,
- وإن عليا قال في الصيد قبل أنAnd indeed Ali spoke concerning hunting before
- وإن لساني مقول لا يخوننيIndeed, my tongue is eloquent; it never fails me.
- وإن مسيري من ذراك ضرورةAnd my departure from your heights is a necessity;
- وإنك آية للناس بعديAnd you are a sign for mankind after me.
- وأهوج لاحى في علي وعابهAnd a reckless fool quarreled over Ali and found fault with him
- وأول مؤمن صلى وزكىAnd the first believer to pray and give alms,
- وبيعة ظاهرٍ بايعتموهاAnd an outward pledge of allegiance you swore,
- وجاء عن ابن عبد الله أناAnd it was reported from Ibn Abd Allah that
- وحدثنا عن حارث الأعور الذيAnd we were told on the authority of Harith al-A‘war, whom
- وصاحب الحوض يسقي من ألم بهRoaming by the basin, the one pained
- وصدق ما قال النبي محمدAnd he believed what the Prophet Muhammad said,
- وصفت لك الحوض يا ابن الحصينI described the pond to you, O son of Al-Hussein
- وصلى ولم يشرك سنين وأشهراAnd he prayed without associating partners with God, for years and months—
- وصي النبي المصطفى وابن عمهThe chosen Prophet’s appointed successor and his cousin,
- وصي رسول الله والأول الذيThe designated successor of God's Messenger, and the first who
- وصي محمد وأمين غيبMuhammad’s legatee and keeper of the unseen,
- وعصبة فتشت عني وعن حسبيAnd a band investigated me and my ancestral honor;
- وعلي أول الناس اهتدىAnd Ali was the first of humankind to be guided
- وفاطم قد أوصت بأن لا يصلياAnd Fatima had instructed that the two should not pray
- وفي ذات السلاسل من سليمAnd at Dhat al-Salasil, among Sulaym,
- وفي يوم بدر حين بارز شيبةAnd on the day of Badr, when he dueled Shaybah,
- وقال طوبى أيكة ظلهاAnd he said: Tuba is a grove whose shade,
- وقام محمد بغدير خمMuhammad stood at Ghadir Khumm
- وقد أتانا رداء من هديتكمA cloak has come to us from your gifts
- وقد رويتم له الأملاك ناصرةAnd you have indeed related that the angels support him,
- وقوله الميزان بالقسط وماAnd His saying, “The balance with justice”—and none
- وكان له أخا وأمين غيبHe was a brother to him and a trusted keeper of secrets,
- وكفاه بأن طوبى له فيAnd it suffices him that Tuba is his—in
- وكنت الخليفة دون الأنامAnd you were the deputy, to the exclusion of all others,
- ولدته في حرم الإله وأمنهShe bore him in God’s sanctuary and safety,
- ولقد عجبت لقائل لي مرةAnd indeed, I marveled at one who once said to me—
- ولكنه أصفى عليا وجعفراBut he singled out Ali and Ja‘far,
- ولم ترضعك مريم أم عيسىAnd Mary, the mother of Jesus, did not nurse you,
- ولما رأيت الناس في الدين قد غوواAnd when I saw that people had gone astray in religion,
- وليلة كاد المشركون محمداAnd on the night the polytheists plotted against Muhammad,
- ونعمتي الكبرى على الخلق من غداMy greatest blessing upon creation from tomorrow
- وهو الذي يسم الوجوه بميسمAnd he is the one who brands faces with a branding iron,
- يا ابن أمي فدتك نفسي وماليO son of my mother, for whom I would sacrifice my soul and possessions
- يا آل ياسين يا ثقاتيO family of Yasin, O my trusted ones,
- يا أهل كوفان إني وامق لكمO people of Kufan, I have loved you,
- يا بائع الدين بدنياهO seller of religion for worldly gain
- يا شعب رضوى إن فيك لطيباO ravine of Radwa, surely within you is a good man,
- يا صاحبي تروحا وذرانيO my two companions, go your way and leave me;
- يا صاحبي لدمنتين عفاهماO my two companions, [pause] by two ruined campsites, effaced
- يا عاذلي في الهوى وعاذلتيO man and woman who reproach me for love,
- يا عجبا لابن عطاء روىHow astonishing: Ibn ʿAṭāʾ related—
- يا لقومي للنبي المصطفىO my people, alas for the chosen Prophet,
- يا من غدا حاملا جثمان سوارO you who went forth carrying Sawwār’s corpse,
- يتلون أخلاق النبي وفعلهThey follow the Prophet’s character and conduct;
