أنابَ إلى دارِ الهُدى حين أيفَعا

The designated successor of God's Messenger, and the first who

The prophet's successor, and the first who turned

turned to the abode of guidance as he entered adolescence,

Towards the abode of guidance when he was young

غلاماً فصلَّى مُسْتَسِرّاً بدينِه

غلاماً فصلَّى مُسْتَسِرّاً بدينِه

مخافةَ أن يُبغى عليه فيُمنعا

مخافةَ أن يُبغى عليه فيُمنعا

still a boy, then prayed while keeping his faith secret,

He prayed in secret, following his faith

for fear he would be persecuted and barred from it,

Fearing oppression and prohibition in youth

بمكّةَ إذ كانت قريشٌ وغيرُها

بمكّةَ إذ كانت قريشٌ وغيرُها

تظلُّ لأوثانٍ سجوداً وركعَّا

تظلُّ لأوثانٍ سجوداً وركعَّا

in Mecca, when Quraysh and others

kept prostrating and bowing to idols.

Prostrated and bowed to idols time and again

شريكُ رسولِ الله في البُدُن التي

شريكُ رسولِ الله في البُدُن التي

حَداها هدايا عامَ حجٍّ فودَّعا

حَداها هدايا عامَ حجٍّ فودَّعا

Partner of God's Messenger in the sacrificial camels that

The prophet's companion in the sacrificial camels

he drove as offerings in the pilgrimage year, then bade farewell.

That he had marked for Hajj and bade farewell

فلم يعُد أن وافى الهَديُّ محلّه

فلم يعُد أن وافى الهَديُّ محلّه

دَعا بالهدايا مُشْعَرات فصرَّعا

دَعا بالهدايا مُشْعَرات فصرَّعا

No sooner had the sacrificial herd reached its appointed place

When the gift camels arrived at their destination

than he called for the marked offerings and felled

He called for the marked she-camels and hamstrung them

بكفّيهِ ستّاً بعد ستّين بَكرةً

بكفّيهِ ستّاً بعد ستّين بَكرةً

هدايا له قد ساقها مائةً معا

هدايا له قد ساقها مائةً معا

sixty-six young she-camels with his own hands,

With his own hands, sixty plus six she-camels

offerings of his that he had driven—a hundred in all.

Gifts for him, a hundred camels in all

وفازَ عليُّ الخيرِ منه بأينُقٍ

وفازَ عليُّ الخيرِ منه بأينُقٍ

ثلاثينَ بل زادت على ذاك أربعا

ثلاثينَ بل زادت على ذاك أربعا

And Ali the good received from him she-camels—

And Ali won the best of them, thirty

thirty—rather, four more than that.

Nay, more than that, thirty four

فنحَّرها ثم اجتذى من جَميعها

فنحَّرها ثم اجتذى من جَميعها

جُذى ثم ألقى ما اجتذى منه أجمعا

جُذى ثم ألقى ما اجتذى منه أجمعا

So he slaughtered them, then cut from all of them

He slaughtered them, then took a portion

pieces; then he cast all he had cut from them

From all, then threw away all he had taken

بِقِدرٍ فأغلاها فلمّا أتت أتى

بِقِدرٍ فأغلاها فلمّا أتت أتى

بها قد تهرّى لحمُها وتميَّعا

بها قد تهرّى لحمُها وتميَّعا

into a pot and boiled it; when it was ready, he brought

In a pot he cooked it till it was thick

it, with its meat cooked to shreds and melted down.

Then when it cooled he shredded its meat

فقال له كلّ واحسُ منها ومثلما

فقال له كلّ واحسُ منها ومثلما

تَراني بإذنِ الله صنعُ فاصنَعا

تَراني بإذنِ الله صنعُ فاصنَعا

Then he said to him, “Eat and sip from it, and just as

He said to him, eat some and do as you

you see me do, by God's leave, do likewise.”

See me do, God willing, so do the same

ولم يُطْعِما خَلقاً من الناسِ بِضعةً

ولم يُطْعِما خَلقاً من الناسِ بِضعةً

ولا حسوةً من ذاك حتى تَضلَّعا

ولا حسوةً من ذاك حتى تَضلَّعا

And the two gave no one among the people a morsel of meat,

They did not feed any morsels to people

nor a sip of it, until both had their fill.

Until they'd eaten their fill and rolled around
