Do you recognize a dwelling's trace at al-Suwayyayn, now worn away?

The downpours of rain-bearing clouds have effaced it.

And two winds have trailed their hems across it in turn,

Saba and Dabur—the east and west winds—at evening and dawn.

Dwellings in whose open grounds there once lived

A slender-waisted, full-limbed woman, whose gaze was magic,

Short and slow of step, slim-bellied, stately in her walk,

As though her face were the radiance of the moon's halo.

Separation cast me far away after I had been close to her.

So she departed before I had fulfilled my desire for ʿAbda.

And when she saw me anguished by fear of parting,

Wiping away my tears, their outpouring pearls,

She gestured to me with her fingertips, while her tears

Were like a string of pearls whose thread failed, scattering them.

And I had been wary of what parting would bring,

Yet my fear and caution did not shield me from it.
