وليلةَ كادَ المشركون محمداً
شَرىhe sold نفسَهhimself للهِto God إذwhile بِتَّyou spent the night لاnot تَشريyou sell
شَرى نفسَه للهِ إذ بِتَّ لا تَشري
And on the night the polytheists plotted against Muhammad,
That night the polytheists nearly killed Muhammad,
he sold himself to God, while you spent the night not selling yourself.
Who had offered his soul to God while prostrating.
فباتَso he spent the night مَبيتاًa night’s stay لمnot يكنbe لِيبيتَهto spend it
فباتَ مَبيتاً لم يكن لِيبيتَه
ضعيفُweak عمودِpillar of القلبِthe heart منتفخُswollen السِّحرِthe lungs
ضعيفُ عمودِ القلبِ منتفخُ السِّحرِ
So he spent a night that could not have been spent
So he spent the night in vigil, as never before
by one whose heart’s pillar was weak and whose lungs were swollen.
Had his stout heart quailed, or felt itself bewitched.
