Pass by the grave of Ḥusayn,

and speak to his pure bones:

O bones, may you ever receive rain from

a dense cloud pouring drenching showers.

Life has had no sweetness since you were crushed

    by the Aʿwajī steeds.

A grave holds a pure man,

whose forefathers were the best of creation.

His forefathers were men of leadership,

    the caliphate, and testamentary succession,

    of goodness and refined virtues,

    pure and pleasing.

So when you pass by his grave,

prolong your mount’s halt beside it.

And weep for the pure one, born of the pure man

    and the pure, virtuous woman.

Like the weeping of a wailing woman, when

death one day carried off her only child.

And curse the shade of ʿUmar ibn Saʿd,

and the one mottled with white patches,

    Shimr ibn Jawshan, whom

a wretched soul brought to ruin.

They made their prophet’s daughter’s son

a target, like a mark shot at for practice.

Nothing called them to fight him

but the bounty and the payment.

When they summoned him, so that

the harlot’s sons might be set in judgment over him—

sons of the vilest who ever walked

in arrogance, the vilest of them in nature—

he defied them, his refusal born of

    an honored and unyielding soul.

Then they advanced against him in full-length mail,

    and bearing Mashrafī swords,

and helmets and Yemeni leather armor,

    and long Samharī spears.

They were thousands, while he was among

    seventy Hāshimite souls.

So they met him amid Aḥmad’s heirs,

who came forward from the mountain pass,

    certain that they

had been driven toward the means of death.

O eye, weep as long as you live

for those who kept their pledges faithfully.

There is no excuse for failing to weep

blood, when such weeping befits you.
