O people of Kufan, I have loved you,

From childhood to seventy and old age.

I love you, am loyal to you, and praise you,

As a binding duty upon me, like a decree of fate,

For your love of the Chosen One’s legatee—and sufficient

Are the Chosen One and he, out of all humankind—

And of the two lords, endowed with goodness, and their offspring,

The namesake of him who brought the verses and surahs.

He is the Imam through whom we hope for deliverance

From the heat of a fire that will blaze upon the enemies.

I wrote my verse to you, asking you,

When I was being carried from a home to grave-pits,

That none but you tend me—not the people of our Basra,

The deniers, or those who guard the moneybags,

Nor the rulers, for oppression has allied itself with them:

So their kindness will, without doubt, turn to evil.

And shroud me in white, unmixed

With any brocade or costly striped cloth.

And let no Nasibis accompany my funeral, for they

Are the worst of creation, female and male alike.

May God save me by His mercy

And my praise of the radiant, pure ones, from Saqar.
