هلis there? عندَwith منthe one whom أحببتَyou have loved تَنويلُa granting of favor
هل عندَ من أحببتَ تَنويلُ
أمor لاnot فإنّfor indeed اللَّوْمَreproach تَضليلُmisguidance
أم لا فإنّ اللَّوْمَ تَضليلُ
Is there any favor to be had from the one you love,
Is there someone you loved that you intend
Or not? For reproach leads astray.
To blame, though blaming is misleading?
أمor فيin الحشىthe breast منكof you جوىًlove's anguish باطنٌhidden
أم في الحشى منك جوىً باطنٌ
ليسnot تُداويهِcure it الأباطيلُfalsehoods
ليس تُداويهِ الأباطيلُ
Or is there hidden anguish in your breast,
Or is there a secret in your heart
Which falsehoods cannot cure?
That idle talk cannot heal?
عُلِّقتَyou became enamored of ياO مغرورُdeluded one خدّاعةًa deceitful woman
عُلِّقتَ يا مغرورُ خدّاعةً
بالوعدِthrough the promise منهاfrom her لكَfor you تَخييلٌُillusion
بالوعدِ منها لكَ تَخييلٌُ
You have fallen, deluded one, for a deceitful woman;
You were deluded, o deceived one,
In her promise to you lies illusion.
By a promise from her that deceived you.
ريَّاfull-bodied رداحَheavy النًّوْمِsleep خُمصانةًslender-waisted
ريَّا رداحَ النًّوْمِ خُمصانةً
كأنّهاas though she were أدماءُa white gazelle عُطبولُlong-necked and graceful
كأنّها أدماءُ عُطبولُ
Full-bodied, a heavy sleeper, slender-waisted,
Slow to wake, drowsy,
As though she were a graceful, long-necked white gazelle.
As if she were a drumming damsel.
يَشفيكَheals you منهاfrom her حينَwhen تَخلوyou are alone بهاwith her
يَشفيكَ منها حينَ تَخلو بها
ضَمٌّan embrace إلىto النَّحرِthe upper chest وتَقبيلُand kissing
ضَمٌّ إلى النَّحرِ وتَقبيلُ
What cures your ache for her, when you are alone with her,
When alone with her, what cures you
Is an embrace against the breast, and kissing,
Is pressing to the throat and kissing.
وذوقُand tasting رِيقٍsaliva طيّبٍpleasant طعمُهits taste
وذوقُ رِيقٍ طيّبٍ طعمُه
كأنّهas though it were بالمِسكِwith musk مَعْلولُinfused
كأنّه بالمِسكِ مَعْلولُ
And tasting saliva, pleasant in flavor,
And tasting a scent sweet of flavor
As though it were infused with musk.
As if blended with musk.
فيamong نسوةٍwomen مثلِlike المَهاoryxes خُرَّدٍbashful maidens
في نسوةٍ مثلِ المَها خُرَّدٍ
تَضيقُare too tight عنهنَّfor them الخَلاخِيلُthe anklets
تَضيقُ عنهنَّ الخَلاخِيلُ
Among women like oryxes, bashful maidens,
Of women like the bent maha reeds
Whose anklets are too tight for them.
Too narrow for them are the anklets.
