The Prophet was sent, and thereafter he did not delay

More than a single day before embracing the upright faith.

He prayed, gave alms, and kept his faith secret

From every caring uncle or father.

For years he concealed his faith; whenever he was alone,

He prayed and glorified his Lord with praises.

He prayed at nine years old and donned a striped cloak,

While his age-mates ran about among striped cloaks.

And the Prophet traveled by night, fearing he would be attacked

When covenants and pacts were broken.

And the Prophet came; he spent the night upon his bed,

Wrapped in his covering, like one asleep.

And the idolaters' eyes grew keen, and they encircled

The houses of Muhammad's family with watchposts.

Until, when dawn shone as though it were

A sword whose sheather's scabbard had split apart,

They sprang up, thinking they had captured him.

So they assailed him in turn, and the plotter's scheme failed.

Thus he shielded him from death's sudden assault with his own life,

And indeed his head was pelted with heavy stones.
