That is the keeper of the Fire, whose words are:

'Take my enemy and spare my supporter.'

That is Ali ibn Abi Talib,

son-in-law of the Prophet, the Chosen, the Pure.

Wahb related to us—he was a man

    truthful in speech—on Jabir's authority,

that Ali beheld the Chosen One,

the bearer of revelation from One mighty and powerful.

He saw him, his head bowed with hunger—

may God bless him, so patient a man!

And he remained like one distraught by what he saw

in his kinsman by marriage, of illustrious lineage.

He was wandering when he passed the owner of a walled garden,

watering with a bucket, employing no one.

He asked him, 'What will you give me

for each brimming bucket brought up?'

He replied, 'I have nothing but a date

    for each bucket, without cheating.'

So the Imam of Guidance filled the bucket,

drawing water with it from the loser,

until he had drawn twenty buckets, plus

ten, according to the learned, well-informed one.

Then he brought the dates, hastening with them

to his brother, not hoarding them for himself.

He said, 'What is this you have come to us

with? May God guide you, visitor!'

So he recounted what had happened to him,

from the beginning of the matter to its end.

So he embraced him, then prayed to his Lord

for lasting good to rain down upon him.
