I say, when I saw people going astray
Down every path, wandering without knowledge,
In every art without knowledge, wandering blindly,

Among oath-breakers, renegades, and the unjust,
Among dissenters, deserters, and turncoats,
Adopting the creed of Abu Musa and the Murji'ites:
They professed the faith of Abu Musa and the Postponers.

I profess the faith al-Wasiyy professed
On the day of al-Khurayba: killing those who violated sacred bounds.
The day of al-Khuraibah, killing the Divestites.

And the faith he professed the day of the River -
And my hand shared his hand's work at Siffin,
I profess it, and my hand joins his in the battle of the two hosts,

In shedding the blood it shed one day when present,
And God brings forth the scales for justice,
And God brought forth the scales of justice.

All that blood together, O Lord, is upon my neck.
That blood, O Lord, is on my neck collectively,
Then exact retribution from me afterward—amen, amen.
Then purify me completely after it, amen, amen!

Amen—for others like them in circumstances like theirs,
Amen, from the like of them in their state -
Among youths who emigrated for God, selling their lives.
In noble youths who emigrated for God, buying Him through striving.

They want none but God their Lord,
Excellent is the One desired, whom the seekers sought.
Excellent is the goal the desirers sought!

And you were pure in ancient time, when there was inscribed
You were blessed in the early days of time when it inscribed
Creation therein, both those shown mercy and those accursed.
Upon it “Blessed” and “Damned”.

And you will never cease to be erased by God
In the hidden recesses of the loins of the righteous.
In the loins of the righteous forefathers,

Who selects the best of every generation for you -
Joining to you neither the base among them nor the ignoble,
Not the base, nor the inferior, to oblige you.

Until He brought you to an appointed nation
Because of your excellence, the best of those who pray.
Made the best of those who pray because of your merit.

Thus you are God's bountiful blessing,
So you are a complete blessing from God upon us
From Him upon us, and that goodness had been kept in store.
And the good was treasured up.

Is any deed like yours when you were stitching the sandal—
Is there any deed like your rubbing his sandals,
If those who deny your preeminence were not heedless?
Had the deniers of your merit not been vile?
