وأهوجَ لاحى في عليٍّ وعابَهُ

وأهوجَ لاحى في عليٍّ وعابَهُ

بسفكِ دماءِ من رِجالٍ تَهَوَّدوا

بسفكِ دماءِ من رِجالٍ تَهَوَّدوا

And a reckless fool quarreled over Ali and found fault with him

He raged against the eminent, blaming him

for shedding the blood of men who embraced Judaism.

For shedding the blood of men who had turned Jewish,

وتلك دماءُ المارقينَ وسفكُها

وتلك دماءُ المارقينَ وسفكُها

من اللهِ ميثاق عليهِ مؤكّدُ

من اللهِ ميثاق عليهِ مؤكّدُ

And that is the blood of renegades, and shedding it

Yet the blood of those apostates which he shed

is a covenant from God, firmly binding upon him.

Was by divine sanction binding upon him.

هم نَكثوا إيْمانَهم بِنِفاقهمْ

هم نَكثوا إيْمانَهم بِنِفاقهمْ

كما أبرقوا من قبل ذاكَ وأرعَدوا

كما أبرقوا من قبل ذاكَ وأرعَدوا

They broke their faith through their hypocrisy,

They broke, by their hypocrisy, their plighted oath -

just as they had flashed lightning and thundered before that.

As they had earlier sinned, then raged and thundered.

أتَلْحى امرأ ما زال مذ هو يافعٌ

أتَلْحى امرأ ما زال مذ هو يافعٌ

يُصلِّي ويُرضي ربَّه ويُوحِّدُ

يُصلِّي ويُرضي ربَّه ويُوحِّدُ

Do you reproach a man who, ever since he was a youth,

How dare a man who, since first he reached manhood,

has kept praying, pleasing his Lord, and affirming His oneness?

Had prayed and worshipped God in true unison,

وقد كانت الأوثانُ قبلَ صَلاتِه

وقد كانت الأوثانُ قبلَ صَلاتِه

يُطاف بها في كلِّ يومٍ وتُعبَدُ

يُطاف بها في كلِّ يومٍ وتُعبَدُ

And before his prayer, the idols were

When previously idols, ere he paid homage,

circumambulated every day and worshipped.

Were circumambulated daily and adored?
