ساهرَwakeful الطَّرفِof eye مُقْصَداstricken
I spent my night sleepless,
At night Laila's abode I visited
With wakeful eyes, stricken.
With sleepless eyes intent and focus steadfast
ولقدand indeed قلتُI said قولةًan utterance
وأطلتُand I prolonged التبلُّداbewilderment
And indeed I spoke these words,
And though with wise words filled I spoke
And lingered long in bewilderment:
Prolonged pretense of ignorance I cast
Hawshab
وخِراشاًand Khirash ومِزيداand Mizid
May God curse Hawshab,
Cursed by God be Howshab
And Khirash and Mizid,
And Kharash and Yazeed
ويَزيداًand Yazid فإنّهfor he
كانwas أَعتىmore defiant وأَعْنَداand more obstinate
And Yazid, for he
And Yazeed, for he
Was more defiant and more obstinate—
Was most unjust and stubborn indeed

A thousand thousand, and a thousand thousand
A thousand thousand curses
Curses for all eternity.
Everlasting be their fate sealed

Indeed, they waged war against God
For they fought against God
And harmed Muhammad.
And caused Muhammad to yield

زيدٍZayd تَعنُّداout of willful defiance
They shared in spilling the blood of the pure one,
Partook in shedding the blood
Zayd, out of willful defiance.
Of Zaid, stubbornness their creed

Then they raised him upon a tree trunk,
Then displayed him atop a tree trunk
Slain and stripped bare.
Slain, stripped of his steed
