The chosen Prophet’s appointed successor and his cousin,
The Prophet's cousin, executor and kin,
And the first to pray to the Most High, the Lord of Might,
The first to pray to God on high,
وناصِرُهُand his champion فيon كلِّevery يومِday of كَريهةٍbattle
إذاwhen كانwas يومٌa day ذوmarked by هَريرsnarling وزلزالِand quaking
And his champion on every day of battle,
His helper in each awful day
When the day was one of snarling and quaking.
When horrors shook the earth and sky.

And ʿAmr ibn ʿAbd—he cleaved off his head
Amr ibn Abd marched with his troops
With a bright sword, polished on both edges, keen to cleave.
With brightly polished coats of mail,
كأنّas though علىupon أثوابهhis robes منfrom نَجيعهhis gore

As though upon his robes, from his gore,
As though their clothes were stained with blood
Lay the juice of creatures, or a splash of crimson wine.
Of warriors or the markup of a trail.

The morning the peers of the house of Hāshim marched
At dawn the Hashimite nobles strode
Toward ʿAbd Shams, in garments of terror,
To Abdishams in fearful mail,
كأنّهمas though they والسابغاتُand the full-length coats of mail عليهمُupon them

As though they, with full-length coats of mail upon them,
As if they and their armored steeds
Were unbroken male camels walking beneath loads.
Were mountains marching with their scale.
