هات لي ذكر من أحب وخل
Speak to me of the one whom I love though he is gone,
خطب عيون الدين منه ثجوجه
His sermons captivated the eyes of the faith and the ears of the world shook at his mention,
وإنما وعدك يا ماطري
Over hill, over dale
أنلني يا خير البرية رتبة
Arise for me, O best of creation
لا والذي بثناكم منطقي فتقا
No, by Him who made your girth logical, acute
يمم جياد القول خير ميمم
I direct the steeds of eloquence, applause is most fitting here
وخير أمور الدين ما كان سنة
The best of religious affairs are those established as tradition,
أتتركنا وتذهب للعشاء
Will you leave us and go to dinner
بمثلك هز الملك أعطافه عجبا
With one like you the king shook his robes in wonder
لا تلمني بأن طربت لشجو
Blame me not that I rejoiced at a plaint
بالمصطفى رب وفق
By the Chosen One, may God grant success
عجبت لنظرة أخذت بقلبي
I marvel at a glance that captured my heart
أحيا قدومك مرعى الجود والجود
Your arrival revived the pasture of generosity and munificence,
هكذا يسعى لذكر يخلد
Thus one strives for lasting fame
هذا الذي ربه للخير وفقه
He whom his Lord hath guided unto good,
بشرى فذا صبح التهاني أسفرا
Good tidings! For the dawn of felicitations has shone,
رسل البشائر ورد وصدور
Messengers of good tidings, hearts are returning and breasts
محيا الهنا طلق وثغر المنى افترا
My greetings, O joyful one whose smile and mouth of happiness have blossomed
أضحوكة لمسخره
A laughable matter for mockery
رائد سوف تراه
A pioneer you will see
كأن الورد في ورق وزهر
As if the rose in leaf and blossom
منى سرور كحلت
A source of joy, kohl-adorned
سامح خليلك يا أبا العباس
Forgive your friend, O Abul Abbās
أبا العباس فيم بخلت عني
O Abu al-Abbas, why have you deprived me
أسعدك الله بهذا المسا
May God make you happy with this evening,
تجرد تفز بالرفع قدرا وهمة
Strip yourself bare and you will rise high in rank and ambition
بني متى يتم لنا التلاقي
My son when will we meet
أهدي لحضرتكم تحية شائق
I present to you a passionate greeting
يا لها من حماقة واختلاق
Oh, what folly and fabrication
مولاي أوف بما وعدت فإنني
My Master fulfill what you have promised
أيقر جفن ناعس بمنام
Where are the lions of Islam?
دليل اصطفاء الله للعبد علمه
The sign of God's selection of a servant is his knowledge,
كل انتظام آيل لانصرام
Every order tends towards disorder
صبحا بدا من رأي خير الدين
The dawn emerged from the insight of Khayr al-Din
عواري دنيانا ترد ولا تفنى
The calamities of our world relapse but do not perish
رفع المجد راية للتهاني
Glory raised a banner of congratulations
ووميض ثغر إن قوما قد رأوا
And the flash of a smile - for some have seen
يا واسع اللطف الخفي
O Vast in Hidden Kindness
هاج أجفاني وقلبي المغرما
My eyelids and lovesick heart were stirred
كذبتك نفس غالبت بك كاذبا
Your self has lied to you making you a liar
أم الوزير الشهم إسماعيلا
O mother of the brave minister Ismail
يوم الحسين وليس فيه عزاء
The day of Hussein though it brought no grief
أسبل الدمع عند نشر دخان
Let fall the tears at the wafting of smoke;
كم عصبة ترتوي
How many a group their ears have steeped
وجبة لها لون
A dish with a color
احمد سراك بليل شك عسعسا
Ahmad, I implore you in the darkness of doubtful night
لقد قال هذا الورد للنرجس الذي
The rose said to the narcissus that almost
فديتك بين لي عن اسم مثلث
Tell me about the name of a triangle
لما رمي بالقنطجوب تخضرمت
When the kettledrum was struck, its skin was torn.
يرى بالكس للناس اعتناء
With loose living people seek renown,
لقد قطعت هذا الطريق دجاجة
A hen crossed this road
لإبراهيم فضل الريح طابت
With fragrance sweet the breeze for Abraham blows
وفقوسة مصفرة اللون أنبتت
A yellow convex flower planted
وسائل عن دمعي السائل
My tears flow and I ask why
ألا إن وعد الحق أصدق موعود
Behold, the promise of Truth is the most truthful promise
أبى في محاق الشهر أن يظهر البدر
The moon refused to rise in the darkest hour of night
الصبح باد بأفلاك السياسات
The dawn blows with the orbits of politics
رنت بفواتر الأجفان سكرى
The cups of the eyelids rang intoxicated
القلب يخشع والمدامع تهمع
The heart is reverent, and tears well up,
أبا سعيد وليس البعد عنك قلى
O Abū Sa'īd though we are far apart
وقى الله الجوانح حر نار
May God protect the hearts from fiery passion,
نفسي الفداء لمن حل الحشا فرأى
My soul is ransom for one who pried into my love
نبئت عن ظبي غرير أغيدا
I was told of a charming gazelle
أنهي إلى المولى بإثر تحية
I send to my beloved a perfumed greeting
تبينوا بيتي ففي تاجه
My home stands out with its crown
ربيع من جبينك قد أطلا
A spring from your forehead has risen
مليكنا قد حوى وزيرا
Our king has a vizier
ينهي إليك سلاما جارك الجنب
Your neighbor bids you peace though he's not free of fault
ما له في النحو نبغ
He has no talent for grammar
ابن وزير لخير الدين يهنأ به
The son of the minister of the virtuous king congratulates him
أهي الجبال رست بها الغبراء
Are these mountains darkened by dust,
حلمه وازن بنات شمام
His dream, balanced, Banaat Shimaam's
عوى الضبع الملفلف في الثياب
The sly fox wrapped in robes
إلهي بأرباب النفوس الزكية
My God, by the masters of pure souls,
أهنيك بالعيد الذي أنت عيده
I congratulate you on this festive day of yours
عام سبع صفو لسعد الوزير
The year seven was serene for Sa'd the minister
ما خلت لبي يستفز ويسحر
My lips did not cease to provoke and enchant
ألا نض جلبابا عن الليم أخضرا
Let us make a green gown out of wool,
فواها لذاك المورد العذب إذ غدا
Oh how sweet that spring once flowed,
عيد سرور بالهمام الناصر
A day of joy with the victorious leader
حمى الصادق القصر السعيد وحرزه
The palace of the truthful protector, the happy palace and its refuge
صاح ها شمل السرور انتظما
O companion, serenity has gathered
أمولاي هذا رسول عنيف
My friend, this is an ardent messenger
أي شيء يشابه الأفلاك
What thing resembles the orbits
وهبتك هذا الجزء فانعم بوصله
I grant you this part, so delight in joining it
محيا المعالي مسفر ذو تهلل
O radiant one of sublime traits whose forehead gleams
ماء الحياة قد اختفى في ظلمة
The water of life was hidden in the darkness
أقضي زماني بين صد وهجران
I spend my time between estrangement and rejection
بلغت مثابة وحمى أمان
You have attained a high station and safe haven
انظر إليه محوقا عينيه
Look at him, his eyes squinted
هل يجتلي لحظي رياض نقوش
Will my moment shine with gardens of engraved patterns
كتب العذار على صحيفة خده
The lover wrote upon the page of his cheek
قفا نعتبر ما وارث الأرض بالصفا
Pause and reflect on what the owner of this tomb achieved with virtue,
سلام إذا ما افتر أنشقكم عطرا
Greetings when your fragrance permeates as dawn breaks,
أعيذ نجلي بالسور
I seek protection for my son from the evils
بل ربما قد كان في أغمارهم
But perhaps their ignorance
ربابك يا إسحاق يربو على السحر
Your lute, O Isaac, creeps upon the night
إحسان مثلك محفوظ عن الكلف
Your kindness is protected from burden
يا حسين وأنت والله ممن
O Hussein, and you are by Allah of those
قبر به ضم الحفيد لجده
A grave wherein a grandson embraced his grandsire
بالمصطفى وبأم كلثوم
By the Chosen One and his mother, every
قل للفقيه علام تمسي حائرا
Tell the jurist why he remains confused
إِن طاعنتك الحادثات بأسمر
If misfortunes wound you with darker shades
وجدناك في الحمام لا زلت طاهرا
We found you in the bath still pure
كأن الورد محفوفا بزهر
As if the roses were surrounded by blossoms
إلهي إن قصدي من قصيدي
My God, my intention in my poem
طل بالأمير لواء خير الدين
Ask for the prince, the flag of the best of faith, Khayr al-Din
توسط بين الشمس والبدر سالم
Salem mediated between the sun and the moon
يا زائري عشية الإثنين
O you who visit on Monday eve
أتتني الغزالة قبل الزوال
The gazelle came to me before noon
بعد التحية والثناء العاطر
After greetings and fragrant praise
يا منعما قبل السؤال على الورى
O Bestower before asking throughout the earth
وما الألف إلا واحد فإذا سما
The letter Alif is but one, yet when it aims
ما أم ذو أمل حمى ابن عروس
No mother of a hopeful son protects him
يا ثغر حييت بالمرابط
O mouth that I greeted with a kiss
ما بدر وجهك كالبدور إذا اتسق
Your face gleams like the full moons when they shine
أسال بهم دونها وببالي
I asked with anxiety beneath it and in my mind
مولاي وافتني تحيتك التي
My Master, your greeting reached me,
قالوا أجازك أعيان مدحتهم
They said the nobles praised you,
خير حام مجد مجير العبيد
The best supporter of glorious glory, the servant of the Glorious
خطب له الدين أرنى لحظ مذعور
Religion mourned, showing me a moment of distress,
الدهر حرب بالرزايا الفجع
Time wages war with calamities so dire
أفاطم لو شهدت ببطن
O Fatima, had you witnessed the belly of Khobt,
عهدي بها في الخدر تحجب دلها
My pact with her in the wine is to veil her charms,
أعيذ صفاء الود من كدر العتب
I seek to preserve the purity of affection from the turbidity of reproach,
منظومة شرفت بمدح المصطفى
A poem graced with praise of Al-Mustafa
لا مثل للمصطفى في سائر الدول
The Chosen One is unmatched among all nations
أيها الزائر أمل ما تريد
O visitor, consider well what you seek,
هناء سواء كلنا في سروره
Joy for us all in his bliss
يا قرة العين وقيت الأسى
O solace of my eyes, may you dispel sorrow,
قالت الكتب ألا هل واصف
The books said, isn't there anyone
أأعسف في ظلماء ظلم عواذلي
Shall I be violent in the darkness of oppressors' injustice,
إذا صرم الزمان عرى حبالك
When time unravels your ropes
أنهي إلى ابني سلاما عاطرا أرجا
I send my son fragrant, perfumed greetings
أدرها من البوقال في كأس بلور
Pour it from the jug into a crystal glass
لصادق رعيه القصر السعيد
For the true shepherd of his flock, the auspicious palace
يا سيد العلماء علما راسخا
O master of scholars, with established knowledge,
حلى عقده من يسمى
He adorned his necklace, he who is named
لك الحمد يا من خص أهل الطريقة
You deserve all praise, O You who have graced the people of the spiritual path
خميس اليمن توج عام خمس
The crescent of Yemen crowned the year five
يا من بذي اللذات قد خشي التلف
O You who fears loss of blissful joys,
مولد نجلِ بيرم محمد
The birth of the son of Pirmuhammed
هذا بمصنعة الحفصية انسبكا
With this of the Hafsian craft was woven
لله مائدة المسرة زينت
God's table of joy was adorned
قد أكثبت فرص الجميل فبادر
Opportunities for goodness abound, so seize them!
در أيادي التهاني فتحت صدفه
The hands of congratulations opened their shells,
هذا الذي نظمت به الآباد
This that I have composed as an ode
يعللني بذكراه عذولي
His memories justify my withdrawal
قالوا به حول يشان به
They said madness was in him, and he did appear mad.
خزائن فيها راهن للمدافع
Treasuries in which there is a pledge for the defender
لذ بالغرام ولذة الأشواق
Delight in passion and in yearning’s joy,
يا معشر العرب هلموا انظروا
O gathering of Arabs, come and see
لا وغصن راق للطرف ورق
No delicate branch for the gaze, leafy,
ألا في جوار الله تم نفاسها
Behold! In the vicinity of God her childbearing was complete
يا خير محتفظ لود حبيب
O best preserver of a lover's affection,
انظر إلى السحر يجري من لواحظه
Behold the magic flowing from his cheeks,
كل امرئ دنياه ذا حدها
Each person's world has a limit to it
يا طيب الكلم الرفيع ويا أبا
O you of refined and lofty words, O father
إلى بيتك اللهم بالعزم أقبلنا
To Your home, O Allah, we came with resolve
خليلي هبا فالهنا آب وسمه
My beloved, bestow your bounty, for our time has ripened
يا حبذا جبل الريان من جبل
Oh how wonderful Mount Rayyan is as a mountain
وافى رسولكم وأعفاج الحشا
Your messenger has come and the wilderness stirs
تونس الأنس بلدة ميمونه
Tunis, the city of felicity, is blessed
دولة نال بها المغربان
The state where the two Maghrebs attained
أورت يمينك عزمي بعد ما صلدا
You strengthened my resolve after it had weakened
بسعيك تبلغ الرتب العظام
Through your efforts, you attain the highest ranks
رآه طرفي على طرف يمر به
My eyes caught a glimpse of him passing by
أفق أيها المغرور بالعيش قد صفا
Awaken, O you deluded by life, for the horizon has cleared,
أجدك هذا مضجع الفخر والمجد
I find you here a place of pride and glory
يهنأ بمولد طه خاتم الرسل
وجوه لا تزال تضيء حسنا
أقول وطرف النرجس الغض ناظر
عظم الأجر عن عظيم المصاب
أنهي لمجلسك العلي تحية
وطأت ما وطئت ريب الليالي
سما للعلى يقظان عين حديدها
أتذكر إذ مسحت بفيك عيني
أمولاي والآمال تستعبد الحرا
وزائرة في فروة كبدية
وزائرة في ثوب سقم وتحته
الحق كالصبح تمتاز الرجال به
هاته الكأس التي ناولني
عبده محمود قابادو ما
مولاي إن كرام إسلامبول قد
يا أهل بيت له العلياء والعظم
سائل النفس قبل فوت الأوان
يا دارة جلت بذي القمرين
حبيبي إن حبك ملء قلبي
ما لابن خلدون لعمري ثان
يا أكرم الناس أخلاقا وأحسنهم
أنهي لناديك العلي ثنائي
يا سيدي إني عزمت إيابا
تبكي عيون النجم ملء غروبها
أبا العباس تهجرني لذنب
يا سيدي قضيت أمسي جمعه
إلهي ذنوبي ما علمت وإنني
هل العز إلا في اطراح المراتب
مجلسنا طاب بالطويبي
يا أيها الشيخ الذي لم يزل
سألت من المليحة برء دائي
هناء به الأيام تمحى وتنسخ
أحييك يا من لا يزال تشوقي
سلت لواحظه مهند قده
مقام فضله كالشمس بادي
ألا يا صبا نجد متى هجت من نجد
أما والذي قد قدر البعد بيننا
بيرم الخامس الهدى
يا أيها القرطاس ته وافخر إذا
ألا هذا الذي منه تحيد
خير حام مجير عبد المجيد
سيان أن لبس التجمل أو عري
على مثلها من أنعم يجب الشكر
نغمات الهنا بمثنى وزير
برق به أفق الرجاء أنارا
أبا المحاسن وافاني البشير بكم
إليك ومنك الحمد ربي مدى الدهر
كم فكرة من شعري الشاعر
قمر محيا المجد عنه مسفر
فسحة العمر وإن طالت قصيره
سيدي شأوك أعيى المحتذي
بحمد إلهي والصلاة على الذي
بصادق عزم تفخر الدولة الوسطى
أهل البكوش دينا للموطأ
ذو العقل إن أغضيت عن جهله
يا أيها الشيخ أين مسرعا
يا حسنه لما تثنى وانحنى
حبوتك بالتليد وبالطريف
زار الوزير مقام غوث صرفا
وذهبية الجلباب فضية الحشا
ووردة قد شاقني عرفها
ونور تسميه العوام بجانم
حرست بعين الله من كل طارق
وذهبي نمر فضضوه بسكر
وجبة لها لون
ذا مقام للمحرز الصديقي
وحمراء قبل المزج صفراء بعده
يا طالبا للخبر الصادق
هذا المصير وكل نفس ذائقه
دام أفق الوزير ينمي الأهله
أمولاي لم يرتد لي الظن غيركم
مولاي أهدي نحو مجلسك العلي
إليك وإلا فادر من أنت جاهله
وروضة حسن بات ينشقنا الصبا
أبيت ولي قلب من الوجد مضرم
حديث عنقاء صب أدرك الأملا
يا هلالا في منزل القلب حلا
كتب القتل والقتال علينا
وضعت سلاح الصبر عنه فما له
حلقي مسحت بموطئ القدم التي
بذاتك يا الله بغيهبك الأسمى
وجوه لا تزال تضيء حسنا ويقبح
العدل عهد خلافة الإنسان
انظر إلى جانم خدوجة
دام يمن لدار خير الدين
الشكر لله لا أحصي عليه ثنا
وقالوا الرزق بالتدريس صعب
أخذ الدواة وقال باسم الله
قيل لي أنت أحسن الناس طرا
