أما وهوى عصيت له العواذل

Although I disobeyed the chastisers for passion

هل للأماني عن جنابك مدفع

Have hopes from your side any defense,

لا تخش عدوى من أبحت ذماره

Do not fear the enmity of those whose secrets you have exposed

سل المقادير ما أحببته تجب

Ask destiny for what you desire, it will answer.

لقد دفعنا إلى حالين لست أرى

We are pushed toward two states, I do not see

بنصرك يدرك الفتح المبين

Victory is attained through your aid,

طيف ألم قبيل منصدع الضيا

Lean figure pained me before the breaking dawn

عداكم هوى مذ شفنا ما تعدانا

Since we loved you, you have turned away, not keeping your promise,

تفردت بالمجد دون الأمم

You have excelled in glory over other nations

أما ومناقب عزت مراما

With noble traits that raise aspirations aloft

أبى الدهر إلا أن تقول وتفعلا

Fate insisted that you should speak and act

إني وإن كنت في الأقوال محتكما

Though in speech I'm eloquent

يا للرجال لنظرة سفكت دما

O men, for a glance that shed blood,

إدراك وصفك ليس في الإمكان

Realizing your merit is beyond feasibility

محلك من محل الشمس أعلا

Your status is higher than the status of the sun

ما كان قبلك في الزمان الخالي

None before you in time gone by

إباؤك للمجد أن يبتذل

Your forefathers disdained glory to be debased

لي بامتداحك عن ذكر الهوى شغل

My praise of you keeps me from thoughts of passion,

قد كفى الله وهو نعم الكافي

God sufficeth, the Best to trust;

ما عليها أوان تطوي الفيافي

No passage of time makes the hills subside

شرف المعالي من يساجلك العلى

The one who rivals you in excellence has achieved nobility,

هل غير ظلك للعفاة مقيل

Are there any other shades for the sinful besides your shade?

بإحرازك الفضل الذي بهر الخلقا

With your virtuous qualities that dazzle all creation,

النجم أقرب من مداك منالا

The star is closer to you than your reach,

ظلامة من أعدك لليالي

Darkness, who readied you for the nights?

أرقدت عن قلق الفؤاد مشوقه

You slept away from your anxious heart's yearning

لا زال ملكك بالعلى مأهولا

Your kingdom remains supreme

ضل من يستزير طيف الخيال

He who seeks solace in illusory dreams,

عوضونا من السهاد الرقادا

Replace our wakefulness with sleep, perhaps imagination may grow accustomed

أما ومساع لا نحيط لها عدا

The favors you have shown are beyond all count

علي لها أن أحفظ العهد والودا

It is incumbent upon me to keep the promise and affection,

ما ذي المساعي الغر في قدر الورى

What is the use of vain efforts in the fate of mankind?

هل فوق مجدك غاية لطلاب

Is there an ultimate goal beyond your glory that seekers yearn for?

بسعدك دارت في السماء الكواكب

With your auspiciousness the stars revolved in the sky,

بقيت لذا العز الذي عز مطلبا

You have remained for that honor which has honored an aspiration

تسد إذا حم الحمام المذاهب

The ways are blocked when the doves coo,

بقيت ولا عزت عليك المطالب

You remained, though demands no longer impress you

عاذ بالصفح من أَحب البقاء

He who loved survival sought refuge in forgiveness

أما الفراق فقد عاصيته فأبى

Though I defied separation, it refused

إن العلى المعيي الملوك طلابها

The lofty kingdom sought by kings

ما في المعالي مطمع لسواكا

There is no aspiring to heights but through you,

أما الزمان ففي يديك عنانه

As for time, its reins are in your hands,

أرى الأرض تثني بالنبات على الحيا

I see the earth adorned with vegetation

ما ضر طيفك والكرى لو زارا

Your phantom visiting would not have harmed, even if the homes had been abandoned,

أما الزمان فقد ألزمته الجددا

Time has become new through your innovations,

محل لهم بين النقا والأجارع

A place for them between softness and camel mounts,

لا زلت تعلو وإن حسادك إكتأبوا

You still rise high though your enviers are dejected,

ما مرتقاك على من رامه أمم

No matter who aspires to reach your heights, nations,

وتربة المرحوم والحاء جيم

The soil of the deceased whose name starts with H

شفاء الهدى يا سيفه العضب أن تشفا

The cure of guidance, O sword of wrath, is that you heal,

كن بعيدا إن شئت أو كن قريبا

Be far, if you wish, or be near

مساعيك لا تحصى فتدرك بالعد

Your efforts are uncountable, so they cannot be grasped by counting

بجيد علاك مدحي كل آن

With your graceful neck, my praise for you flows at all times

أما وظلك مما خفته وزر

Your protection relieves me of what I feared, though the strange vicissitudes afflict me.

أعد منعما بالعفو روحي إلى جسمي

Return my soul appeased with pardon to my body

أرى لك يا خزرون لبنان في الورى

For you, O Khazrun, I see Lebanon as it truly is,

ذد بالعزاء الهم عن طلباته

Console sorrow for its wishes with consolation

بك اقتضى الدين دينا كان قد وجبا

Through you, religion fulfilled an obligation that was already due

لقد أدنت لك البلد السحيقا

The distant land drew near for you,

أجدر بمن عاداك أن يتذللا

Worthy of being humble is he who opposed you

ما نرى للثناء عنك عدولا

No praise of you we ever turn from nor

ولي مولى أساء فلم أسمه

I have a master who did me wrong, but I will not name him

أرى سفها ولو جاء العذول

I see folly, even if the prudent comes

كلانا إذا فكرت فيه على شفا

Whenever I think of you on the brink

لو أن شامخ قدر دافع قدرا

If an aspiring leader defends his destiny

سما بك دهرك فليفتخر

By you, your era can be proud,

فت الورى فعلام ذا الإجهاد

The world is conquered, so why this struggle?

أبا طاهر أنت عيب الزمان

Abu Tahir, you are the blemish of time,

خير الأنام لشرهم إحكاما

The best of people to their enemies are resolute

طاول بهمتك الزمان وحيدا

With your lofty ambition, you have endured time alone,

سبقت ففز بعظيم الخطر

You advanced and won the greatest danger

هل العدل إلا دون ما أنت مظهر

Is justice anything but what you display?

إن لم أقل فيك ما يردي العدى كمدا

If I do not say of you that which destroys hostility forever,

ليهنك ما أنالتك الجدود

Rejoice in what your ancestors attained,

طاول بقدرك من علا مقداره

Tolerate those whose status is less than yours,

ليهنك ما شادت لك الهمم العلا

May gladness lead to what noble aspirations built for you,

يطمع الناس في البقاء وتابى

People hope for longevity, yet fate brings

تخلف عنه الصبر فيمن تخلفا

Patience deserted the one who abandoned it

كفى الدين عزا ما قضاه لك الدهر

The religion has honor enough in what fate has decreed for you

سل عن فضائلك الزمان لتخبرا

Ask time about your virtues, so it may inform

ما الحسان فما لهن عهود

O possessor of timeless glory, nations have no covenants with you,

ليهن العلى فرع غدوت له أصلا

Glad tidings for the Exalted House, a branch has grown

أبا زنة لا زال جدك هابطا

Abu Zanna, your ancestors are still descending

يا أيها الملك السامي الذي شرفت

O exalted king under whom

إن الفريق مذ استقل مغربا

Since the group has gone abroad,

يا غابرا وجد الندى

O one who found the dew burdening,

أسكان نعمان الأراك تيقنوا

The people of Numaan made the sandy hills their home

ظن الأراك لدى واديه أظعانا

لصرف الليالي أن يصول ونخضعا

قسما بسؤددك الذي لا يدعى

كذا في طلاب المجد فليسع من سعى

هل بعد فتحك ذا لباغ مطمع

من عف عن ظلم العباد تورعا

هو ذاك ربع المالكية فاربع

أما وبديع ما تأتي يمينا

دعوا القول فيمن جاد منا ومن ضنا

ما في المعالي علي منك يعتصم

يا ديمتي نوء الثريا دوما

قفوا في القلى حيث انتهيتم تذمما

ما أدرك الطلبات مثل مصمم

لا تجز في الذي بلغت الأنام

تمني العلى سهل ومنهجها وعر

قصر عن سعيك الألى جهدوا

شرف الملوك عدت معاليك المدى

لو لم يقد نحوك العدى الرغب

حمى النوم أجفان صب وصب

هل للخليط المستقل إياب

لكم أن تجوروا معرِضين وتغضبوا

محض الإباء وسؤدد الآباء

أرى الشرف الأعلى إليك مسلما

أما وسيفك في النفوس محكم

دم بالصيام مهنأ ما داما

بالحول نلت ونال الناس بالحيل

لله قدرك ما أجل وأشرفا

دل على المجد من إليه سعى

لك السعي ما ينفك يخدمه السعد

هواكم وإن لم تسعفونا ولم تجدوا

فتية قد قطعوا الده

حاشاك أن تسلب الأيام ما تهب

لا فات ملكك ما أعيا به الطلب

ما لي مقال عن فعالك يعرب
