- أتاني كتاب تنقيه الكتائبA letter came to me that battalions would dread;
- أتاني كتاب من خليل منمقAn ornate letter came to me from a dear friend,
- أتيتني مستفتياً في أمرYou came to me seeking a ruling on a matter
- أثام عليك الدهر انك جاهلPunishment be upon you forever, for you are ignorant,
- إذا أمر الهوى رابكIf the matter of passion troubles you,
- إذا بت مشغول الفؤاد بما ترىWhen I spend the night, my heart absorbed in what is seen
- إذا ذكر المجدون يوما لفضلهمWhen benefactors are remembered one day for their bounty,
- إذا صور الدنيا المصور ظاهراWhen the painter depicts the world's outward form,
- إذا ضغطت دنياي في البرد جثتىWhen, in the cold, my world presses my body
- اذا فكرت في دنياي يوماIf ever I ponder my worldly life,
- إذا كان التغزل شان شعريIf love poetry has marred my verse,
- إذا كان خير الدين عني راضياIf Khayr al-Din is pleased with me,
- إذا ما تعشى القنبيط جراضمWhen a glutton has cauliflower for supper,
- اذا ما رمت من دنياك امراIf you seek something from your world,
- أرى الدهر خوانا يعادي الجوائباI see time as treacherous, warring against al-Jawa'ib,
- أرى الدهر صافاني ومال إلى الصلحI see that Time has befriended me and inclined toward peace.
- أرى القول يحلو بذكر الرجالI find speech grows sweet with the mention of men,
- أرى زماني وفي سيماه تبشيرI see my time and in its features good tidings
- أرى غاية اللذات قبل ابتدائهاI see the end of pleasures before they begin.
- أرى في طلعة الجاهI see in the countenance of the igno-
- أرى كل شيء في الشتاء إذا بداI see all hoar in winter whenever there appears
- أرى للنساء الماشيات حلاوةI see sweetness in women as they walk.
- اسفه من دنياه تزرى بهThe most foolish of those whose worldly life disgraces them
- أقر أعيننا بالعين أكرم منThe most generous has gladdened our eyes with the spring—
- أقول لدنياي إني أرىI say to my world, “I see
- أقول وفي فوادي السر ينموI say, while the secret grows within my heart,
- أقول وفي فوادي النار تذكوI say, while fire blazes in my heart,
- ألا ثق بتيسير الامور فما يرىTake heed: trust that matters will be eased, for whatever seems
- ألا عللاني بالتمدن تعليلاCome, you two, console me with civilization.
- ألا قف بالطلول ولو قليلاCome, stop at the ruins, if only for a little while,
- ألا يا قلب مالك لا تذوبAh, O heart, why do you not melt
- الحرص في الدنيا يزيدGreed for this world grows
- الحق يعلو والصلاح يعمرTruth rises, and righteousness builds.
- الدمع بعدك ما ذكرتك جارِAfter you, tears flow whenever I remember you.
- الشعر مثل الشَّعر داعية الهوىPoetry, like hair, is a summons to love.
- العيد أقبل والهناء بشيرThe feast has come, and happiness is its herald.
- الفى من الدنيا العناء ومزبرI found the sky full of sorrows and griefs
- المرء والمرأة سيان في الـMan and woman are alike in their
- الناس في الدنيا علىPeople in this world are of
- إلى الله اشكو ما تكن ترائبيTo God I complain of what my breast conceals,
- إليك الفصل في كل الأمورYours is the judgment in all affairs,
- إليك شكوت من ألم الفراقTo you I complained of parting’s pain;
- أما أنا فاود لو أن الورىAs for me, I wish that all mankind
- أمودعي والدمع كاد يحولO you who bid me farewell, tears almost come
- ان ابغ من دنياي يوما حاجةIf one day I seek something I need from this world of mine,
- إن أطرب الأسماع مدح مهذبIf praise of a refined man delights the ears,
- إن الجوائب والدنيا قد اعتدتاIndeed, al-Jawāʾib and al-Dunyā have both transgressed
- إن النساء حيثما كن سوىIndeed, women, wherever they may be, are alike;
- إن تبتسم دنياك يوما فلاIf your world smiles upon you one day, do not
- إن ترض زيدا أغضبت عمراIf you please Zayd, you anger Amr;
- إن تعدل الدنيا فكنIf the world turns your way, then be
- إن تعدل الدنيا فكنIf the world inclines, then be
- إن دنياي عجوزIndeed, my world is an old woman;
- إن زارني عالم أو جاهل بدرتIf a scholar or an ignorant man visits me, forth rushes
- إن قال غيري قد يقال زوجةIf another says, “One may say ‘wife’ (zawjah),”
- إن يزرني يوما فتى ذو صلاحIf a virtuous young man visits me one day,
- ان يلهث الوغد الدنئIf the vile scoundrel pants
- انما الدنيا عناءThe world is nothing but toil,
- إنما الدنيا غرورThe world is nothing but delusion;
- إنما الدنيا نعيم وشقاءThis world is nothing but bliss and misery.
- إنما دنياي وعدMy world is nothing but a promise,
- أهلا بأكرم قادمWelcome to the most generous newcomer,
- أو ما كفاني اليوم طول تناءHas not today's long estrangement been enough for me
- أين المبارز والمناضلWhere are the duelist and the contender,
- أيها القارئون صبرا على ماO readers, bear patiently with what
- بحرى المقدر حيث قدر شائياFate runs where it is decreed, outstripping
- بروحي من أعلمه وقلبيI would give my soul for the one I know; and my heart,
- بسم الزمان عن المنى وتنوراTime smiled, revealing hopes, and grew radiant,
- بنو الدنيا تعوقهم الامانيThe children of this world are held back by their hopes
- تبرج لي الدنيا على حين لا ارىThe world flaunts her charms before me at a time when I see
- تبسم ثغر الكون عن طالع السعدThe universe's mouth smiled, revealing the rise of good fortune,
- تبغي لكاعي سد سميها معاThe vile woman wants both her openings plugged at once,
- تتقلب الدنيا بناThe world tosses us about,
- تتودد الدنيا لمنThe world courts the one
- تدنو مني الدنيا لمنRoses draw near, a joyful sight
- تدور بي الدنيا وحالي واقفThe world spins me round, while my condition stands still.
- تصبح الدنيا لزيد مرةAt one time, the world is Zayd's in the morning;
- تعاكس المستقيم الدThe upright man is opposed by the
- تعجبت من دنياي لما رأيتهاI marveled at my world when I saw it
- تغار زوجي علي حتىMy wife is so jealous over me
- تود زوجي شططا أننيMy husband wishes I were
- تولى ربيع العمر مني واقبلتThe spring of life has left me, and now comes
- جفتني الوقائع في الصوم إذAl-Waqāʾiʿ shunned me during the fast, since
- جلا عني سلامك يا خليليYour greeting, my dear friend, has dispelled from me
- حتام أرتقب الوصال تعللاHow long shall I await reunion, consoling myself?
- حرام على من غاب عن مصر انهIt is forbidden for anyone absent from Egypt
- خلفوا لي كآبة وهموماThey left me melancholy and cares,
- راح الحمار وخلى القيد في الوتدThe donkey went off, leaving his tether on the peg;
- رأيت بني الدنيا يؤاكل بعضهمI saw the sons of this world: some dine with others,
- رأيت دنياي تبكيI saw my world weeping.
- رحلوا كما رحل الكرى عن ماقيThey departed as sleep departed from the corner of my eye.
- رعى الله التجارب حيث ابدتMay God bless the experiences, for they revealed
- رويدك إنني ما جئت نكراEasy now: I have done nothing reprehensible
- زارت سعاد وثوب الليل مسدولSuad visited while the robe of night hung down.
- زعموا الدنيا عناسا ينجليThey claimed the world was a mirror, where shines forth
- زعموا الدنيا مدورةThey claimed the world was round,
- ساعة البعد عنك شهر وعامAn hour of separation from you is a month and a year.
- سالت دنياي متى ينتهيI asked my world, “When will it end—
- سألت دنياي يوماI asked my world one day,
- سألت ذا صمم عن حاله شفقاI asked the deaf man about his state out of compassion,
- سروا والوجد في الاحشا باقThey departed by night, yet longing remains in my breast.
- شكوت من الدنيا فقالت ظلمتنيI complained of the world, and she said, “You have wronged me.”
- شهدت عليك مناقشات جئتهاThe debates you entered have borne witness against you—
- طرف التصور في غرامك جامحThe steed of imagination runs wild in love for you;
- طوبى لمن في الناس أصبح حالقاًBlessed is he who, among men, has become the shaver
- طيري لا غير لا أسلو عنه ساعةMy bird, no other—I never forget him, not even for an hour.
- عبث الهوى بي من نفور الآنسLove toyed with me through the amiable beloved's aversion;
- عبر الدنيا عليناThe world's lessons pass over us,
- عجبت لدنياي كم اطمعتI marveled at my world—how often it raised hopes!
- على الدنيا انجلى ذنب لنجمA star's tail has appeared over the world,
- عنا لي من زماني ما اريجWhat I desired appeared to me from my time [final word uncertain].
- غرام دنياك سكرPassion for your world is intoxication,
- فديتك من ظبي وان لم ترد قربيMay I be your ransom, gazelle, though you do not desire my nearness,
- في طلعة الدنيا بهاThere is splendor in the world's countenance,
- في مخبر الدنيا الذيIn the world's inner nature, which
- قد أقبلت أم دفرUmm Dafr (Mother of Stench) has come,
- قد زادت الدنيا علي عداوةThe world has shown more enmity toward me
- قد طينت الدنيا علىThe world has indeed been molded upon
- قد كان طبع أبي دلامة إنهIndeed, Abu Dulama’s nature was such that he
- قد كنت أحسب هيئة الدنياI had thought the world's shape a counter-
- قطعت النظم عني يا خليليYou have withheld your verse from me, my friend,
- قفا بي خليل ابك الطلولاHalt with me, friend; let me weep over the ruins.
- قم عجلا قم سؤلي عندكRise quickly, rise—my wish rests with you.
- كابدت من زمني كوارث جمةI have endured many calamities from my times;
- كاس النوى ملئت الى اصبارهاThe cup of separation was filled to its brim.
- كأن الشمس تبرد ان بردناAs though the sun feels cold if we feel cold,
- كأن الناس يرتاحون طبعاIt is as though people naturally delight
- كان دنياي ثكلىMy world was bereaved
- كأن دنياي عقدMy world is like a necklace
- كأن همومي وهي تحت مخدتيAs though my worries, there beneath my pillow,
- كأنما جرذان بيتي درتAs though the rats of my house had learned
- كأنما دنياي أحبولةIt is as though my world were a snare,
- كأنما دنياي من زئبقIt is as though my world were made of mercury,
- كل بني الدنيا علىAll the children of this world are
- كل ما ترى الدنياAll that the world beholds
- كل ما على الدنياAll that is in this world
- كلما هب نسيم في الضحىWhenever a breeze blows in the forenoon,
- كيف ترجو من خسيس القدر انHow can you expect one of low worth to
- لا الوم الدنيا على خطأ الفهمI do not blame the world for misunderstanding,
- لا تنقضي الشكوى منThere is no end to complaints about
- لا يطيب في الدنياNot sweet in this world
- لا ينال المجد من رهباGlory is not gained by the timid
- لاع الغرام فؤادا لازم الشجناPassion tormented a heart that clung to sorrow,
- لبعد احبتي عيل اصطباريMy patience is tested by the absence of my loved ones
- لسنا نرى إلا جمالك في الضحىAt midmorning, we see nothing but your beauty;
- لقد راقني في الليل دمع الغمائمThe clouds' tears by night have truly delighted me,
- لله درب الحديد كم كفلGod bless the iron road—how many a rump
- لم ادر هل دنيا فيI do not know whether the world, in
- لم يخل في الدنيا امرؤNo man in this world is free
- لمن أشكو وقلبي اليومTo whom can I complain, when today my heart
- لها علي في الهوىShe has a claim on me in love:
- لو ابقت الدنيا على من سلفHad the world spared those who came before,
- لو انصفت دنياي في حكمهاHad my world been fair in her judgment,
- ليت شعري ماذا يفيد البيانIf only I knew what good eloquence does,
- ليس العفاف من النساء سجيةChastity in women is not innate virtue
- ليس في الدنيا سوى محنThere is nothing in the world but trials.
- لئن غابت فما غابتThough she is gone, there still remain
- ما الذي ترجو من الدنيا وقدWhat do you hope for from the world, when she has already
- ما انصفت دنياي في انهاMy unjust world did not spare
- ما ترى عيني مثيلكMy eye sees none like you.
- ما رأيت في الدنياI have never seen in this world
- ما صاحب الدنيا سوىThe world's companion is none but
- ما طابت الدنيا سوىWorldly life is sweet only
- ما كنت أول عاشق بين الورىI was not the first lover among mankind
- ماذا اقول اذا اردت مديح منWhat shall I say when I wish to praise one
- متى بسمت دنياك خادنك العدىWhenever your world smiles, your enemies befriend you.
- متى هب النسيم على الغياضWhenever the breeze stirs over the groves,
- محضت دنياي نصحاI offered my world sincere counsel:
- مضى وكل قطين بعده فانHe passed away, and every dweller after him must perish.
- ملك الجمال أعز من ملك لهThe angel of beauty is more exalted than a king who has
- من الدنيا جرت عبرFrom this world, tears have flowed;
- من حارب العين خانته مضاربهWhoever fights the eye is betrayed by his blades.
- من رأى من الدنياWhoever saw of this world
- من سره عاجل الدنيا فسوف يرىWhoever delights in this world's immediate pleasures will come to see
- من عجب الدنيا امرؤAmong the world's wonders is a man
- من لم تودبه دنياه بعبرتهاWhoever is not schooled by his worldly life through its lesson
- من يلح من الدنياWhoever appears from the world,
- مهما تخالفت الارواح هب علىHowever much souls may differ, there blows upon
- هذا كتابي للظريف ظريفاًThis is my book, witty for the witty,
- هو الغيث الذي يهمىHe is the shower that pours abundantly
- وجدت بني الدنيا جهولا وعالماI found the sons of this world ignorant and learned:
- ورب حزن القلب عن سفهAnd many a sorrow [protects] the heart from folly,
- ورب عجوز تحاكي السعاليAnd many an old woman resembles the she-ghouls,
- وسيلة كل المكرمات محمدMuhammad is the means to every noble deed;
- وطنت نفسي على ماI have steeled myself for whatever
- وفي باريس لذات كما فيAnd in Paris are pleasures, as in
- وما نفع الوثير من الحشاياOf no avail are many garments
- ومن محن الدنيا عداوة جاهلAmong this world's trials is an ignorant man's enmity,
- وهم الذين كسوا قوام جوائبيAnd they are the ones who clothed the form of my Jawāʾib
- ويا رب حتى في المنام تروعنيAnd O Lord, even in sleep You terrify me
- ويلي على هذي الجوائبWoe is me over this al-Jawa’ib!
- يا أيها الأعزاب أني رافضO bachelors, I renounce
- يا أيها البحر قد أهديتني درراO sea, you have gifted me pearls;
- يا بدر قل لي هذا الهجرانO full moon, tell me: this estrangement—
- يا سامي الأوصاف إن لديك منO you of lofty qualities, you indeed possess
- يا سائلي باسم الذي أنا مادحO you who ask me the name of the one I praise,
- يا سيدي اني وحقك لم ازلO my lord, by your honor, I have never ceased
- يا عين بكى فواداO eye, weep for Fuad,
- يا فاتر الجفون ما بدا لكO you of languid eyelids, what came over you,
- يا للعجاب وكل عجبO marvels! And all conceit—
- يا ليت اني والجوائب كاسمناWould that I and al-Jawa'ib were as our names suggest,
- يا ليلة لم تذق عيني بها سنةO night in which my eye tasted no slumber!
- يا معشر العلماء افتوا سائلاO company of scholars, give a questioner your ruling,
- يا من يسائل كيف كانت حالناO you who ask how we were
- يذوب فؤادي لإذكار الحبائبMy heart melts at the remembrance of loved ones;
- يعاوص دنياه من لا يرىHe contends with his world who does not see
