Would that I and al-Jawa'ib were as our names suggest,

If only I and the spring were one in name

And that the world, likewise, appeared close to me;

And so too, this life seemed close and dear to me

فيجيئني متملقاً متوددا

فيجيئني متملقاً متوددا

من كان يشنأني ويحمد شانيه

من كان يشنأني ويحمد شانيه

Then there would come to me, flattering and affectionate,

Then he who had spurned me would come fawning

Whoever once hated me and praised his own detractor.

He who had blamed me would praise my qualitie
